A s 1- Y J. , - - 0 5 FOOTPRINTS Four years have passed since our timid steps first brought us to the Prep. Each year as we have grown our stride has lengthened. and what were the footsteps of little boys have become the steps of a1most men. In this book we will reminisce, but more often our eyes will be on the future. Our steps are leading us into the world of adulthood. We hope that as you examine on these pages our footprints of the four years iust ending, you will see them not only as marks of past accom- plishment. but as shadowings of future promise. i RANZJM a?E?3 sqiwgq-rn: QHRGEGH SAQNT 1 In grateful recognition of Mr. Earl I. Hart, who has won our un- bounded respect not only as an able teacher, but also as a friend, we, the seniors, dedicate this book. We will not forget the facile wisdom of his teaching technique. While preparing us diligently for school examinations he showed us methods of study which will aid our college work. We looked forward to Mr. Hart's period each day, for he had mastered the rare art of inculcating lasting knowledge through pleasant humor. Enviously we covet the lot of the underclassmen who can look ahead to his periods, while we must look back upon them. Fortunately, we were treated to Mt. Hart's efficient tutelage both in first year and in fourth. He will hold a unique place in our memories. May Our Lord's grace be with Mr. Hart always, and may this small token of our sincerest appreciation partially compensate him for the long hours he spent in making us better Catholic men. 8:15 a m Mr Hart reaches the Prep DEDICATION 9 o'clock-The mysteries of Solid are explained. XX X , DEBATING In September the Barbelin season got under way with the election of Milton Connell as President, Paul Curran as Vice-President and Ioseph Murphy as Secretary. The first semester record showed a 19 win, 19 loss result in debate. In addition to the thirty-eight debates recorded, the Barbelin teams participated in two radio broadcasts, one oratorical contest and one ex- tempore contest. The oratorical contest brought us a winner in the person of Milt Connell whose speech on the subject I Speak for Democracy was adjudged the best among the entrants from the Philadelphia Private Schools. The extempore contest won Iohn Schubert the Vice- Presidency of the Civic Forum Student Con- gress. Second semester promises to be all the more busy. In addition to the regular schedule, there will be a Iunior Town Meeting of the Air broad- cast, the NFL District Tournament in which we will be the defending Debate Champions, The Catholic League Tournament and the Pennsyl- Several top debaters in pre-toumament caucus. Stage crew members Stinger and Schubert, Wonder what this one does? THE CAPE As the '49 Chronicle goes to press, Members of the Cape and Sword are hard at work on their annual spring production. This year's choice of play, a drama written so long ago that its author is not definitely known, is titled simply Everyman, and is the greatest of all morality plays. Though the setting is medieval. the fact is that Everyman has been played suc- cessfully and enjoyably from the reign of Ed- ward IV down through the years to our own fast-paced age. Consequently Tom Hayden, projecting the Voice of God throughout the auditorium, is at- tempting to make the words given him sound as imperious as they did back in 1500. Black Christmas Play with Father Goqlia holding the spotlight. es 't xii -Ml AND SWORD shrouded Ioe Haenn, enacting the part of Death, plans to arouse in a bobby-soxer the same fear that a young peasant experienced when he viewed the show. As for Everyman himself, Vince De Marco should prove to the audience that the principal character might well be dressed in tweeds or a tuxedo as in a medieval tunic. And so on, through all the characters: Knowl- edge, Kindred, Good-Deeds . . . all of which are being essayed with gusto and imagination by the young devotees of Thespis. It is hoped that their work and generous cooperation will bring profit to them and an enjoyable evening in the theatre to their audience. Ioe Haenn prepares to play Death. and K bs: - I Bob Deal: caught in a rare contrite mood. THE CHRONICLE The accent was on change for the '48-49 Chronicle as the advent of the Prep's new paper made the Chronicle a purely literary magazine. It might truly be said that the birth of the Hawk- letter marked the rebirth of the Chronicle. Di- rected and spurred on by a new moderator, Mr. lohn F. X. Burton, S.I., the staff attacked the task of revising old departments and creating new features to replace those dropped by the wayside. Sports interviews, a new drama de- partment, a larger fiction section and a new poetry staff all vied for reader interest. While seeking to provide opportunity for the greatest possible number of would-be authors to write, and at the same time attempting to offer a universally readable publication, the entire staff endeavored to publish a truly streamlined Chronicle between the traditional covers. Of its success the school can be the judge. The final product was surely a re- vamped Chronicle. MOST OF THE CHRONICLE STAFF First Row: Goqlia, George, Connell. Curran, Healy. RELIGIOUS Our Lady is honored with a living rosary. Religion at Saint loseph's Prep is not merely the short daily ten minute periods or the two full weekly periods devoted to it. It is not just another subject which we have to study because we receive tests in it. The spiritual side is much better exemplified and expressed DY the various religious activities engaged in by all of us. The K. B. S. Mass and Communion, First Friday Devotions, the Sodalities, weekly confessions, retreats. May Devotions, the Rosary in the chapel and the Saint Ignatius and Bellarrnine clubs, all help make religion what it is at St. loe's, all are the powerhouse which energizes our actions both in school and at home. The books and coats on floor and windowsill weekly testify that the Knights of the Blessed Sacrament is the largest religious organization in the school. For Fr. Cosgrove and Dick Torpey check returns on the Mite Box Handicap. every Friday at eight o'clock a large part of the stu- dents congregate in the Gesu Church to hear Mass and receive Holy Communion. The other mornings of the week are devoted to the different Sodalities of the Bles- sed Virgin Mary. The weekly Sodality Mass and in- struction is intended to bring us closer to the Blessed Virgin. The Sodality yearly sponsors a food drive, 'ir ACTIVITIES Seated: Mr. Neale, S.I., Green, Healy, Loscalzo, Sweeney. Standing: Barley, Silvinskas, George, Poppert, Da Crema. Madden. fir' 41 . The Bellarmine Club is by nature and preference a private and rather secretive organization. Its purpose is embodied in its motto, Alter Christus. By pre- scribed devotions and sacrifices its members strive to become, in action and thought, other Chrisis. Mr. Car- roll, S. I., was its moderator this year and his helpful instructions and advice greatly aided the club mem- bers in gaining in part, at least, their object. The St. Ignatius' Club, whose moderator is Mr. Lynn, S. I., gives weekly instructions in catechism to the boys of Girard College. No particular religion may be taught at Girard College, so Mr. Lynn and a few volunteers instruct the youngsters in the beliefs of the Catholic Church. The Class of '49 had its senior retreat at St. Ioe's and the adjoining Gesu Church. For three days we endeavored to turn our thoughts away from all other activities and to concentrate on our spiritual lives. The retreat was held from October 30 to November 1. There was no school-work nor underclassmen to divert our Y Q 'qt The May Shrine, token of Prep devotion to God's Mother. V' attention as we walked from the instructions held in the library or auditorium to the various devotions con- ducted in the Church and the reciting of the Rosary in the yard and then dashed swiftly to the cafeteria for our meals. Fr. Gannon, S. I., proved to be a retreat master who was more than sufficient and who instilled and inspired interest in all of us. His knowledge of our desires and needs surprised us. Everyone of his talks solved the difficulties we had already undergone and will encounter. Under his expert guidance, we examined our pasts and resolved to strengthen our religion in the future. We will always remember Fr. Gannon, -his generosity, his humor, understanding crnd kindness- the dashes to the meals and the hap- piness in knowing we had made a successful retreat. Prep rooters were astonished when the Golden Bears drove for a touchdown mid-way in the opening stanza. The fighting Preppers, led by George Thomas. scored in the next period, but still trailed, 7-6. Due largely to our spotty pass-defense the Bears scored minutes later. In the second half the visitors' punting kept the Hawklets from scoring again, and the Tommies had beaten the Prep for the first time. Final score: 13-6. LA SALLE The following week the Crimson and Gray met a smart La Salle squad, and fell before the Little Explorers, 38-0. Led by Dick Bedesem, the Olney-ites were in command most of the game. Our stellar Sophomore center, Bobby Vincent, a real sparkplug in our forward wall, sustained a broken right leg and was lost for the remain- der of the season. SOUTH CATHOLIC Traveling to 12th and Bigler Streets, the Prep succumbed to the champion Pirates of South Catholic. Playing their best game of the sea- son, the Black and Orange scored in every period to win, 39-0. WEST CATHOLIC Still full of determination and fight, the Hawklets met the Burrs of West at Finnessey Field the following week. The Prep offense bewildered the Burrs, and with Iim D'Antonio leading the way we were ahead at intermis- sion, 7-O. In the second half the Burrs capita- lized on their big weight advantage and wore down the valiant Prep line to take home a 20-7 victory. T 1 M gg -at e Q Q. ALLENTOWN CATHOLIC After a week's lay-off the Crimson cmd Gray journeyed up-state to grapple with the Vikings of Allentown Catholic. Playing extremely well despite several long penalties, the Preppers showed offensive power as they came from behind three times to gain a 20-20 tie. NORTH CATHOLIC Once beaten North Catholic came to Finnes- sey Field the following week. With Hugh O'Donnell, George Thomas and lim D'Antonio leading the way, the Prep played its best game of the season. The Falcons went home with a bad scare, but nevertheless a 19-7 win. ST. l OHN'S But still the Hawklets refused to quit. As yet without a win, and in the throes of their most disastrous campaign, the Hawklets played host to St. Iohn's a week later. George Thomas found a big hole in the line and went 65 yards to score on our first play from scrimmage, and with Thomas scoring again on a later pass- play, and Carmody making both conversions. we won our first game, 14-12. ST. JAMES' The Bulldogs from St. Iames were next on our schedule. Taking advantage of intercepted passes and Prep fumbles the Iimmies went home with a surprising 32-0 triumph. V21 Our annual Thanksgiving Day game with Roman, for many years now a Catholic League tradition, brought to a close the '48 grid sea- son. Both teams had rather poor records, but a grim determination and will to win that have highlighted every St. Ioe's-Roman clash. We ended our league season with one win and seven losses. But the team never gave up and a loyal band of followers never stopped cheering. Outweighed in almost every game the Preppers always fielded a fighting team. Most of this '48 grid team will return next sea- son, and gives every promise of a successful campaign. 1' Alminde and Swanick were hustling hard BASKETBALL Last November' when Coach Ioe Oakes looked over his prospects, he smiled specula- tively. He turned a listening ear to reports drifting in from foreign camps. Then he set to work. He looked again and noticed his squad had little height, excepting 6'5 center lohn Doogan. To counteract this disadvantage, he adapted a fast, quick-break brand of ball that filled the 32 minutes with speed and a steady stream of leather to the backboards. At the forward positions he designated vet- eran letter winners loe Alminde, senior, and Larry Reagan, junior. Doogan was a fixture at center and finished eventually second to Ernie Beck in league scoring In the backcourt were Don Swanick and Ioe Rutledge Working floormen who fed teammates with a steady flow of assists Both shone on defense frequently stealing the ball. Swanick, for his size, was superb on rebounds, and Alminde sparkled on fast breaks, quick as a bolt. Larry Reagan developed into one of the most feared players in the Catholic League. loe Langan, West Catholic mentor, regarded him as the equal of anyone on the schoolboy courts. Larry had a deadly set shot, good drive and a knack of breaking up a close game. Doogan had few equals beneath the boards. He was a fine shot off the pivot and proved more than capable on defense. Doogan's absence from the Prep lineup was always the most noticeable. loe Rutledge was a steady, smooth-working playmaker for the Stiles Street- ers Ioe was always cool and collected dunng tense moments when most players freeze A versatile performer Rutledge had a good eye from anywhere on the court was a clever dribbler and a good defense man -2:74, Captain Mike Swamck J- D-4? ,I Bob Kane Northeast High Olney Hlqh Southem High Bartram High Camden Catholic North Catholic Roman Catholic South Catholic St Thomas More West Catholic St Iames OPP hm Clark LaSalle North Catholic Roman Catholic South Catholxc St Thomas More West Catholic St Iames LaSalle South Catholic fplayotfsl LaSalle fplayottsl Iohn Dooqcm 'fm ...nf in WM 'A Y lady-a Z. , N' Ioe Alminde ,-:nr-ununng -ali! Bob seldom hesitated to dive for loose balls or loose players. Ioe Kenney was another holdover from last year's squad. From the Iayvees, Mr. Oakes recruited Dick Breen, injured most of the season, lim Clark, Iim Carmody, Speed Donohue, Frank Shannon and Ioe McCloskey. After a month of practice, the boys got their first taste of action against Northeast High on December 3. It was a sloppy affair won by the Prep 35-30. Subsequent victories over Public League opposition followed, with a 55-36 con- quest of Olney and a 47-42 victory at the expense of Southern. Bartram provided the Prep's first stiff opposi- tion on December 16. The Stiles Streeters out- played them in every department, winning 44-39, and established themselves as definite Catholic League threats. Doogan, who had scored 19 points against Olney, led the Hawk- lets with 17. A triumph over Camden Catholic on December 28 by a crushing 67-36 score, wound up pre-league play. It was a hard-fought game in which Doogan, Breen and Alminde garnered 38 points. Moving to the Palestra on Ianuary 14, the Hawklets prevailed over scrappy South Catholic, 41-36. Butledge's 12 points were high. Iohn Doogan paced St. Ioseph's to its fourth loop Win, 58-41, by pouring in 20 markers against St. Thomas More on Ianuary 16. The game was tied, 37-37 going into the last quarter, but Reagan's stab got the Prep away on a 19- point spree. gf, I The Prep won its tenth in a row by turning back West Catholic, 50-41, on Ianuary 21. The Hawklets, sparked by lohn Doogan's 15 points, got away to an early lead and were never headed in spite of Doogan's early withdrawal on personals. St. lames was added to the list of league victims on Ianuary 23, suffering a thumping 40-60 setback. Doogan was high again with 17. Reagan and Rutledge also hit double figures. In a battle of undefeated giants at the Palestra, Ianuary 28, the Prep collided with La Sa1le's Basketball Squad and went down to its first loss, 44-54. La Salle got most of the breaks but didn't manage to pull away until the final three minutes, when its lead shrank to 44-42. Doogan led with 15. St. loseph's began its second round of league play by whipping North Catholic, 58-29, Ianuary 30. Applying a fast break most of the afternoon, the Hawklets pulled awcry from a 23-14 halftime lead to double the Falcon's score. Rutledge caged 18 points. Roman Catholic fell to the same overwhelm- ing fate, losing for the second time to St. lo- seph's, 63-32, on February 4. Iohn Doogan had amassed 19 by the middle of the third quarter, then sat out the rest of the game as reserves took over. The Hawklets needed Larry Rea- gan's 16 points and an extra period to over- come fighting South Catholic, 53-47, on Febru- ary 8. The game had been tied up 44-44 with four seconds to go after a great Pirate fourth quarter rally. On February ll, lohn Doogan swished a staggering 31 point total against St. Thomas as the Stiles Streeters turned in a close 51-47 win. Doogan established a 1948-49 Catholic League high. Two days later, the Prep bat- tered against West Catholic and with Beck and a former Hawklet, Garrity, in the fore, the Burrs rapped the Stiles Streeters, 46-37. St. Ioseph's' was way off in its shooting, making but eight field goals. The Prep moved to Chester for the first game of the season's final pair, and returned with a surprise 48-39 setback, suffered at the hands of St. lames. Minus Larry Reagan and with Doogan unable to score heavily, the Hawklets went down to their second straight defeat despite 14 points by lbe Rutledge. The season's last regularly listed game, prior to the playoffs, offered the Hawklets a chance to atone for the previous loss to LaSalle, but they were demoralized 62-42 by an alert, fast band of sharpshooting little Explorers. A strong Valley Forge Military Academy team handed the Prep its first loss early in December. The Prep mermen started the Catholic League race by barely losing to Ro- man. We stand at the foot of the famed marble steps for the last time as students, and we look back upon the memories of four years-the angry roar of teachers, the timid first attempts at translation, the uncounted lugs, the elation after successful exams, perhaps even the sorrow of conditions. The footsteps of four years rush along the corridors and we are over- whelmed by the recollections of all the experi- ences we will' have no more. And so we wan- der back, tracing our footsteps on the paths we have walked during four brief years. We were the raw recruits of the Prep in '45, and the top-brass seniors loomed large on our horizon. Our first steps into life at St. Ioe's were unsteady and we. like other freshmen of the past, required some time to become ac- customed to the school that was to be so much a part of our lives for the next four years. Though our memories of that first year are dim, we can still recall the towering figure of Fr. Lenny, and his doleful prediction that not half our class would graduate. Exultation, how- ever, was our feeling after the dramatic 7-0 North game. We met Fr. Morning for the first time, and we came away from the meeting realizing how he was to become so much a CLASS HISTORY part of the Prep in a few brief months. We struggled with Algebra under Mr. Hart and Mr. Himes who seemed to move along with us, year by year, and we winced each time Mr. McGuire pounded the desks. Fr. Blankfard provided the season's best laugh as he re- christened Tomasulo McSorley. The first giant raffle brought a mad rush of chances, sales talk and commissions. The year sped by and in the scramble we lost ll and gained lM. And after the first year we found ourselves perhaps wiser, and at least more certain of our place in the Prep. Then came the footsteps of our second Sep- tember at the Prep with Fr. Michael Smith as our new principal. We were assigned to Sophomore sections by Mr. Bonhage and felt just as full-fledged as any upperclassmen,- after all hadn't we worn our Prep sweaters on every beach from Wildwood to Beach Haven? A new P.A. system was waiting for us with a priceless little bell that was to furnish a sixth period breather for the next three years. Sep- tember also found us with a celebrity in our midst, Ted McGurk by name, who was lunior Moth Boat Champion of the world. We were impressed. Of course there were lots of things to im- press us that fall and our footsteps had become a little more confident, but a lot more difficult. For while Ioe Hood led the struggling Greek stu- dents through vocal declensions, the Biology boys were hardening themselves to the aroma of eau de crayfish. This was the fall that Fr. Conroy broke his statue. About this time it was rumored that one of our teachers was modeling for Browning-King: someone called him Crusher . and it stuck. As the year went' by camel's hair sport coats and Subjugate North almost turned him into a legend. And if you're interested in the discip- linary history of second year you can ask any one of 2C's speedy sophomores what they mean by the Kelly Slowdown. But second year had its sorrow too, for on December 8th God called our Fr. Morning. We missed his smile and gentle dignity. With our second mid-terms behind us and with a basketball team that had been running in high gear, we suddenly found old S.I.P. in the headlines. First we were Catholic League champs, then City honors were taken and the final glory came in Harrisburg with the Eastern Pennsylvania title. After that climax in February things rushed to a rapid conclusron Before we knew 1t review time had come then finals farewells and off aga1n to the gay haunts of summer We were Iumors And now our thrrd Prep year had arrived and we returned to these hallowed halls once more to rmpnnt footsteps of memor1es upon our mmds and upon the Prep footsteps that will last longer though for they were weighed down by the heavier burden of jumor year studies Our attention was focused upon the new pnn clpal Fr Pltts and as is usual in third year we saw our classmates step into promlnent places in the Prep world of sports George Thomas Dave Stokes loe Hood loe Rutledge Iohn Doogan Mike Swamck and others of our class were known throughout the school This was the year of a great football team headed by All Cathohc Co Captains lxmmy Brooks and Iersey Doyle Long will we remember Fr Coolahan s Baltlmore diction and mannensms to 3D a year of mysterious holes in the ceiling of 3C Curran and Connell wmning the Catho hc League debating trophy and the disappear ance of 3E at mid term memones of Homecom mg at the school of French and Spanish perrods of Al Serenxs convertible of the un forgettable All right children' and of con gruent tr1angles A d1ff1cult year it 1S true but at rts close we looked over the threshold of a short summer vacation to a long awaited senior year with its renowned pr1v1leges and advantages We were Just a b1t hesitant as we glanced back proudly over three years and peered ahead regretfully to our last year We saddened at the realrzatron that our stay at the Prep was growrng short and foreseeing that next year was to be the year of decision we resolved that our final footsteps at St Iosephs would be noble ones Now as we stepped into senior year our stride was self confident and assured How well we remember those classes we loved fthough we wouldnt admrt itl those icy gym periods on the roof the refreshing pauses in our smoke filled lounge and the welcome sound of that beloved 2 40 bell We witnessed the birth of our prodigy The Hawkletter Pleasant words and smiles faded and the yearbook moderator laid the cards on the table But we responded with our dol laraweek scheme, and in no time the year book was in h1gh gear Coach loe Oakes fielded an unusually powerful aggregation led by Captain Mike Swamck and high scoring lohn Doogan We battled qu1te vigorously through first term and Homecoming found us none the worse for our encounters The spiritual gurd ance of our Senior Retreat helped to lighten the burden of Latin Tr1g and Physics Deeply imprinted in our minds lies the mem ory of Birdie Costellos ready wit the caus l1C quips of Mr Hart and the uphill fight for those coveted class rings The sweet music and soft lights of the Prom and the happy yet sad moments of our graduation are rounding out our last and most pleasant year at the Prep Now our footsteps falter and we stop here on the threshold of manhood We look back at the happy years spent at l7th and Stiles and that feeling of overwhelmmg joy we so expected on our departure 1S not to be found The ideals and principles taught us here have heartfelt thanks for everythmg that St loe s has been for us we bid a sad farewell and silently pray that God will watch over our Alma Mater and keep her as we remember her Mr. Barry and the strict discipline he brought left us indebted beyond any repayment' with Jim, Klan, IAMES I ALGEO 235 High Street Sharon Hlll Pa rm one of the better hked members of 4 D an mtellectual grant good fnend of every one 4 D s gandrdate for best beadle lost hrs appendrx one day has wom cr groove rn Kenney Gym Sodalrtyl Bellarmme Club 1 2 Debatmg 3 Yearbook EDWARD F ALLWEIN 714 Carpenter Lane can be found at Holy Cross on Fnday mghts ace photographer Penn rooter a iuture M D halt of The Three Dots Hey Har' Let s roll' Sodahty 4 Yearbook IOSEPH M ALMINDE 1728 W Ingersoll Street 1 steady forward of the basketeers Mr Kelly s ioremost bookstore peddler Three fouls a mmute goes home for lunch good sense of humor Have anythmg to eat Ixm'7 Sodahty 3 4 Bellarmxne Club 2 St Iohn Berchman s Socxety 1 2 3 4 Basketball 3 4 Yearbook IOHN H BARNES 6834 Ogontz Avenue ack amateur photographer constant spectator at Vxllanova games those tres not to mentron the he clasps travels wzth Schrkal and Helm rn the Chevy Up the Mount Sodahty 3 4 IOHN H BARRY Bala Golt Club 50th and Woodbme Avenues ack the Prep s answer to Ben Hogan otten seen wxth Wxlson well known around Menon never mxsses a Soda11ty meetrng Keep qunet wxll ya?
