Most Reverend BRYAN J. McENTEGART, D.D., LL.D., L.H.D. Bishop of Brooklyn Chairman, Board of Trustees SISTER VINCENT THERESE Ph.D., Catholic University of America President Though the process of change has been and always will be with us, never before has it manifested itself in so many areas of our lives. Faced with these new and different realities, our role in life must also change. As women having the benefits of education, a Catholic education, our new role brings with it even greater responsibility. In meeting this responsibility, we will look for strength in what was once ours. Upon leaving this community, a community which has fostered growth and understanding, we will take with us the tools. Only by living each day to the fullest, will we discover how well we have assumed our roles as women in the world. In Memoriam SISTER TERESA MARIE, C.S.J. Rest In Peace DEDICATION On July 15 th, the College community mourned the death of Sister Teresa Marie at a concelebrated Requiem Mass offered in Queen of All Saints Church, Brooklyn. A member of the faculty at St. Joseph ' s for thirty-one years, Sister was an Associate Professor of English at the time of her death. Remembered for her constant congeni- ality and love of life, Sister, a 1933 graduate of Saint Joseph ' s College, gave generously of her time and talent in the interest of the college and its students. As Chairman of the English Department for six years, and Moderator of Footprints until her death, Sister gave years of dedi- cated service to the students and alumnae. To commemorate her service and devotion to the college, the 1968 Footprints is dedi- cated to her memory. In serving God and her fellow man, Sister Teresa Marie suc- cessfully completed her role as a woman in the world. Strassburger, Chairman of the Psy- chology Department, died suddenly last January. Friends, family and members of the college community attended his Funeral Mass at St. Margaret ' s Roman Catholic Church, Riverdale. After receiving his undergraduate and master ' s de- grees from Fordham, Dr. Strassburger joined their faculty, where he remained until 1936. He was, then, appointed to the faculty of St. Joseph ' s. While study- ing at Columbia University under the late Professor R. S. Woodworth, he earned his Ph.D. in Psychology in 1949. Member of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Strassburger was a National Science Fellow at the University of Michigan 1959-1961. Elected to active membership in the New York Academy of Sciences in 1964, he is also listed in American Men of Science and Who ' s Who in the East. Since 1959 he had been affiliated with the Catholic Home Bureau for Depend- ent Children, where he served as Senior Psychologist. Remembered as Grand Marshall at graduation cere- monies, Dr. Strassburger ' s absence at future graduations will sorely be missed. Since his greatest legacy to St. Joseph ' s has been his years marked by dedication and service, his highest tribute as a teacher may be that he was always avail- able to give help and advice to his students. 86 In Memoriam Dr. Raymond S. Ferris o ACTIVITIES EVENTS in Orientation of the Class of 1971 The Class of ' 71, one hundred and fifty-one strong, arrived at the College on September 11, 1967 to begin a week of Orientation Activities. Following the tradition of past Orienta- tions, the first two days were spent on a battery of examina- tions. The Freshmen ' s introduction to the spirit, opportunities, and responsibilities at St. Joseph ' s keynoted the remainder of the week. A Mass of Friendship, which united the Class of ' 71, with their Junior sisters, the Class of ' 69, began the roster of scheduled events. During the Mass, celebrated by Father Cuff, Mary Sussillo, Junior Class president, led the juniors in the adoption of their Freshman sisters. After a box lunch picnic on the campus, the girls participated in games and a day ' s-end hootenany. Following an informal meeting with the faculty, the fresh- men were taken on a guided tour during which they became acquainted with the extra-curricular facilities of the college. A boat-ride with Manhattan College completed the round of events. This outing was planned by U.A. Vice-President Susan Burke with the able assistance and cooperation of stu- dents, faculty and administration. On Sunday, September 17, 1967, the members of the Class of ' 71 were formally invested with their caps and gowns, sym- bols of their membership in the academic community. 112 ' k . ' I ' aA. ? . ATf- 9 V? 3r i 3r b ' lif 1 1 - Groundbreaking Ceremony On Monday, October 30, 1967, the groundbreaking for the new William T. Dillon Child Study Center took place. Sister Vincent Therese, President of the College; Reverend Mother Immaculate Maria, Member of the Board of Trustees; Elaine de Felice, President of the Undergraduate Association; and Eileen Ma- loney Graziani, President of the Alumnae Association, participated in the actual ceremony. Monsignor Raymond Leonard, Chairman of the Theology Department, acted as Master of Ceremonies for the occasion, while Monsignor Charles Diviney, Vicar General of the Brooklyn Diocese and former faculty member, blessed the ground and recited the prayer. Following the ceremony, a concelebrated Mass was offered in the College auditorium for the repose of the soul of Monsignor Dillon, and for God ' s blessing on the new building. The Center, which will provide needed work area for the expanding Child Study Department, is being built at an estimated cost of $590,000. The Alumnae have already donated $80,000 toward the construction. Also, the Center has been beneficiary of the Annual Giving Program of the Alumnae Association for the third consecutive year. Expected to be completed and ready for use by September, 1968, the new two-story structure is being constructed by Schumacher and Forelle from the architectural design of Clark and Warren of Poughkeepsie. The formal dedication of the new Child Study Center, located on the far end of the campus along Vanderbilt Avenue, is tentatively scheduled to take place on October 12, 1968, the fourth anniversary of the death of Monsignor Dillon, former president of the College and founder of the Child Study De- partment in 1934. After a student vote last Fall, the U.A. was revised. Part of this significant alteration was the development of a Student Senate. Because of lack of space, it became necessary that some alternate plan for U.A. representation, other than compulsory attendance, be adopted. So, it was with this consideration in mind that provision was made for the Senate. This legislative body comprises 20% representation of each class. The other branch of Student Government is Student Council, which serves as the administrative body of the U.A. Receiving its rights to exist and exercise power from the Undergraduate Association, its membership consists of U.A. and class elected officials. Traditionally, the Council exercises the right to initiate action on any matter of student interest. He presented the evolution of the development of the con- cept of logic held by the Greeks. Taking this civilization as his starting point, Professor Kline carried his analysis through to the controversies raised in our own time. These contro- versies are the result of recent studies which delve deeper into the foundations of mathematics. Combining careers as mathematical physicist, educator, and author, Professor Kline has also served as the Chairman of the Department of Mathematics at Washington Square College. A G A P E 128 Sister Joseph Immaculate Moderator LITERARY SOCIETY Serving as a meeting ground between literary currents and the student, Literary Society provides a forum through which individual insights into creative works are exchanged. To accommodate this effort, discussions are frequently held on topics that might range from Robert Frost to Rosemary ' s Baby. In addition to these discussions, the Society, on October 31, co-sponsored with Chapel Players the production, The Negro Speaks of Rivers. Featuring material culled from folk mediums and the writings of such men as poet Langston Hughes, three artists presented a dramatic interpretation with musical accompaniment, based on a continuum of Negro life. Through these shared experiences, two ends are achieved: new light is shed upon traditional and contemporary cultural trends; while at the same time, the student is afforded the opportunity for deeper appreciation of the enduring value in literature. 130 VARSITY SCORES: SJC Alumnae 57 Wagner 48 Hunter 46 Queens 45 N.Y.U 66 Hofstra 53 Adelphi 31 Molloy 37 C.C.N.Y 41 OPPOSITION 32 38 49 47 9 23 36 56 53 MEMBERS: Mary Alleva — A. In addition to actually treading the boards, the members of Chapel Players must also prove themselves skillful at such imaginative and necessary facets of theatrical production as make-up, costuming, set lighting, sound and stage design, and stage management. A large part of the group ' s appeal lies in its ability to maintain a spark of the un- expected and controversial in its endeavors. In the last four years, for instance, whether joined with the neighboring St. Francis College drama association, The Troupers, or on their own, Chapel Players, with productions ranging from The Miracle Worker to Aria da Capo, The Children ' s Hour, The Curious Savage through Six Characters in Search of an Author and The Heiress, have rendered their audience respectively, con- fused, shocked, rollicking, spellbound and teary-eyed. Chapel Players is a club whose very nature demands of its members Trojan endur- ance. They must, for twelve weeks of every year, be prepared to lead double lives: that of the working student from 9 to 3 five days a week, and that of a working actor from 5 to the wee hours every night and most week-ends. Such devotion, however, is not proved dull. Some are best forgotten; none ever failed, no matter what the conse- quence, to demonstrate the contribution this club makes to the social and cultural life of both the individual members and the campus as a whole. During the production, Six Characters in Search of an Author, Anna Martini looks defiantly at Jim Brochu and Bill Farrell, as Linda Schmid considers the gravity of the situation. 3 ' - M mm « 1 Sw SWIG , 1968 FOOTPRINTS Kathleen Vasile Editor-in-Chief STAFF MEMBERS: Dympna Smyth, Pat Sullivan, Terry Courtney, Valerie Kilmartin, Lucille Santoro, and Rosalie Barrata. 142 Dympna Smyth Pat Sullivan, Terry Courtney Joan Sqi STAFF Kathleen Vasile Editor-in-Chief Ruth Wanniski Business Manager Lucille Santoro Design Editor Valerie Kilmartin Literary Editor Mary Salerno Typing Manager Layout Staff Dympna Smyth Terry Courtney Patricia Sullivan Business Staff Phyllis Acquavella Michele Azenaro Fran Rose Caruso Antoinette Fiscina Maria O ' Reilly Jo Ann Prospero Lynda Salamy Joan Squassoni Anne Trivoluzzi Antoinette Vasile Color Photography: Mr. Davis, Davis Studio Sketch: Gerald Siciliano A special thank you to Miss Mary Darroch Miss Grace LeRoy Mr. Jim Mitchell photographer Mr. Julian de LaRosa photographer And a very special thank you to Mrs. Carter, our 285 mother Mrs. Carter 143 101 NIGHTS DINNER Friendship, gift of heaven, Delight of great souls . . . Voltaire 145 INTERNATIONAL DINNER 1 1 CHRISTMAS 1967 In an effort to instill the Christmas spirit in the student body, the classes engaged in a competition to decorate the college. As the winning display, the Seniors created an artistic arrangement which embodied the Christian ideals of love and brotherhood. Continuing these ideals of involvement and concern for others, the Jeanne Valois Guild sponsored their annual Christmas party. As its function, the Guild provides for the spiritual and social needs of the handicapped. Climaxing these holiday festivities, the Sophomore class entertained the college with a traditional Christmas tableau. Following the close of the performance, refreshments were served. 147 Patricia Efferen President Im ! • ? ' ll 148 J E A N N E V A L O I S G U I L D 149 Here at St. Joseph ' s College, the practice of religion is the personal responsibility of each student. The Religion Committee purports to facilitate this practice by affording the opportunity for fuller participa- tion in the Liturgy. The annual events of the Religion Committee, which included a Dies Orientalis, Retreats and days of Renewal, the May Day, a charity bridge and the Aquinas lecture, are directed toward this end. At this year ' s Aquinas lecture, held on March 4th, Rev. Martin J. Healy was the guest speaker. His topic was the Logical Cogency of Faith, a phrase taken from Cardinal Newman ' s writings. Included in his topic was the idea of faith in the world today. RELIGION COMMITTEE Monsignor Leonard Rev. Martin J. Healy 150 AQUINAS LECTURE 151 MODERN DANCE CLUB With membership in the Modern Dance Club at St. Joseph ' s, comes another outlet for the creative energies of the students. In addition to taking direc- tion from their Moderator, Mrs. Elizabeth Gilbert, club members themselves must demonstrate initiative in the field of choreography. Included in their past performances are such original pieces as Frolic, the Three Marys, the Four Seasons and a jazz number called Erehwon, with which these daughters of Terpsichore have both surprised and delighted their audiences.
