Banish away all doubts as to the probable authenticity of what is to follow and let us gaze with assurance at the book of time and ascertain the future in store for St. Ioseph's Class of '44 . The year is 1964. The golden sun of May gradually leaves the coppered sky midst a sprinkling of purple-tinted clouds as it slowly smks behind the distant horizon. Lady Night descends from the east and quickly, silently, spreads her star-sprinkled mantle of darkness over a peaceful Laredo. The newly rebuilt St. Ioseph's Auditorium bustles with excitement as Laredoans surge in to witness the crowning of St. Ioe's queen of '64. Eventually, we manage to squimi our way into this magnificent edifice and stumble into some of the few remaining vacant seats. As we look about us, we notice that many of the people present are old pupils of the Academy. Sitting proudly in the very front row is the great Mexican chemist, Gregorio Marcos. Practically bursting his vest buttons with pride, he is telling his old classmates, seated be- hind hirn, that the queen is one of his beautiful daughters. His classmates are seated behind him because the whole front row on the right side of the auditorium is taken up by his wife and children. Seated right behind him, dressed in colorful cowboy attire, is an unusually quiet person. With a. sly smile on his rugged face. Epitacio Resendez, the wealthiest rancher south of the Rio Grande, watches contentedly the match he has stuck into Gregorio's shoe slowly bum closer and closer to his lriend's foot. The auditorium shudders. the windows rattle, and the floor creaks: but the people. un- alarmed, expectantly tum around and greet one of Nuevo Laredo's most popular citizens. Strol- ling nonchalantly into the hall is Lauro Longoria.. a prominent figure in commercial circles. He is especially well greeted by his dearest friend, Iulio Martinez, who has saved him a couple of chairs. Iulio Martinez is one of America's top tobacco magnates who has flown all the way from his Virginia plantations just to see the Coronation and have a friendly chat with Lauro. Although Iulio sells the best tobacco on the market. we see he still prefers to roll his own from the familiar five-cent blue package. Suddenly, the roof is jarred slightly and a loud clatter is heard overhead. We look up just in time to see a vague figure, clad in flying tags, crash through the skylight. He manages to grab a girder and hang on for dear life. During the excitement a galloping of hoofs is heard outside and an impressive figure comes into the auditorium. It is none other than Helium Garcia, a prosperous veterinarian who owns a large ranch-fully one acre in area!-just out- side Laredo. With the help of cowboy Hesendez, he manages to lasso a fixture near the dang- ling figure. As the person climbs down sheepishly, we see that it is none other than aircraft- designer Cyclo Guerra. lust before passing out he manages to explain that as he was land- ing on the roof, his helicopters engine failed. When he got out of the wreck. he tripped and fell through the skylight. As we resume our seats, we are slapped on the back. Hearing a hearty, manly laugh we tum around and behold Molasses Saldana. on time for once in his life. Saldana, the master of masters in basketball. is the coach of Notre Dame's quintet. Under his leadership the University has remained undefeated in basketball for three years. Strolling in leisurely is Noe Sandoval, president of a large drug stare syndicate. As he stops to pester the prettiest of the usherettes, we see that Noe hasn't changed a bit. He is still a bachelor. still well dressed and still the Wolf. The auditorium becomes quiet, the orchestra begins to play a delightfully majestic march and the queen is escorted to her throne. We see a well-dressed, masculine person stroll onto the stage and take over the microphone. A buzz of excitment surges through the crowd as he is recognized. lt is none other than handsome Gadier Gonzalez. Ioyful, good-natured. Gadier has come all the way from New York to be master of-ceremonies at the request of his old team- mate. Gregorio Marcos. I Silence envelops the audience as the ceremonies begin. lust as the queen is crowned the silence is broken by the patter of rapidly walking feet. We turn around and behold the tall. strapping figure of Emilio de la Torre. Emilio is the renowned designer of the revolutionary aircraft Torre Diesel. After greeting us- warmly, he confides that he was held up because the air liner he was arriving on was delayed. Its Torre Diessels had failed to start. fuEQlKQias.-nE7lICCh-tfx26Q7lCCB1-r-nEQ7IC93t-.aHKChm-1dDEiQh-mS?KCh-,.-MQlKChqt-rEDEfEmmSEICh-.fiEDEfCh-MH
