This motto of Ven- erable Father Champagnat might well serve his biographer as a summary of his whole life, for such was his ardent love for and devotion to the Blessed Virgin that she became the inspiration of his every action, the soul of all his undertakings. Born during the catastrophic times of the French Revolution, Marcel- lin Champagnat was able to appreciate at a very early age the evils brought on by the anti-religious doctrines of his day. Thus he realized long before Hitler organized his first youth camp or Mussolini taught the fascist's salute to the boys of Italy that the fate of our civilization depends upon the kind of education given to the young, and with this conviction he set out with all the ardor and vigor of a saint to win the youth of France and of the world to Iesus and Mary. Soon after his ordination he gathered together a group of young men, villagers of his own parish, to carry out this world conquest. Humble, simple. modest, these first Marist Brothers captivated all who came in contact with them by their earnestness and their love for Mary. The infant congregation grew miraculously and at the death of its founder in 1840 it numbered 300 Brothers conducting 45 schools. Today, after an interval of 100 years, the Institute of Marist Brothers has grown to 10,000 members, one of the largest of the Catholic Church. Be- hind the prison walls of the Fortress Europe , and on the bloody beaches where waves the rising sun . as well as in the peaceful haven of our own land, this legion of Mary is still carrying on the fight for the young. Its mis- sionaries are in the lands of the Congo and'the Amazon, its martyrs have fall- en in China and in Spain, its schools flourish in the five continents of the world, and everywhere it carries with it a love and reverence for its father and founder, the Venerable Marcellin Champagnat. ima-.
