To the Seniors of '44 the year that has just ended has made such an impression. This book is published in the hope that in moments of reverie it will help revive the memory of the many good things we have found here at St. Ioseph's: the slap on the back of a smiling classmate, the shouting and thrill of a hard-fought basketball game, the kind encourage- ment given by a Brother when things seem blackest, the good clean feeling that comes with First Friday confession and communion: these are some of the small things that spells happiness and form the memories we wish to treasure most dearly. ,wKh..mHXEm.QQXEmmHXmvm3KemMQX2mm3UChfQ3EGh-fwHM. This motto of Ven- erable Father Champagnat might well serve his biographer as a summary of his whole life, for such was his ardent love for and devotion to the Blessed Virgin that she became the inspiration of his every action, the soul of all his undertakings. Born during the catastrophic times of the French Revolution, Marcel- lin Champagnat was able to appreciate at a very early age the evils brought on by the anti-religious doctrines of his day. Thus he realized long before Hitler organized his first youth camp or Mussolini taught the fascist's salute to the boys of Italy that the fate of our civilization depends upon the kind of education given to the young, and with this conviction he set out with all the ardor and vigor of a saint to win the youth of France and of the world to Iesus and Mary. Soon after his ordination he gathered together a group of young men, villagers of his own parish, to carry out this world conquest. Humble, simple. modest, these first Marist Brothers captivated all who came in contact with them by their earnestness and their love for Mary. The infant congregation grew miraculously and at the death of its founder in 1840 it numbered 300 Brothers conducting 45 schools. Today, after an interval of 100 years, the Institute of Marist Brothers has grown to 10,000 members, one of the largest of the Catholic Church. Be- hind the prison walls of the Fortress Europe , and on the bloody beaches where waves the rising sun . as well as in the peaceful haven of our own land, this legion of Mary is still carrying on the fight for the young. Its mis- sionaries are in the lands of the Congo and'the Amazon, its martyrs have fall- en in China and in Spain, its schools flourish in the five continents of the world, and everywhere it carries with it a love and reverence for its father and founder, the Venerable Marcellin Champagnat. ima-. For this we are grateful beyond the power of poor words to express. The memory of our school days will ever bring with it the thoughtful remembrance of your kindness. lt is with hearts filled with grati- tude that the class of '44 bids farewell to you, dear Principal, Bro- ther Henry B. The last grains of sand have sifted through the hour-glass of our high school career and have left us but these few brief moments before we pass the threshold of a broader and, God willing, a more fruitful existence. It is only fitting that we employ this short time in expressing a word of thanks to those who have aided us so generously during our high school years. Labor Omnia Vi.ncit, says the poet, Toil conquers all. But we have not conquered by hard work alone. Had it not been for the patience and per- severance of you, our devoted teachers: had it not been for the sacrifices of you, our beloved parents, our success today could never have been realized. There is no doubt that our debt to you can never be fully repaid. Yet, we are deeply grateful, and each one of us pledges to show this gratitude by a faith- ful adherence to the principles we have learned here. Four years of hard studies, years of struggle, years filled with joy and fears have passed since we first entered high school. During these four years we have been taught to meet the future with confidence. Have we not the weapons with which to meet every obstacle? Gold may tamish, fame may be defiled by the fickle tongue, fortunes may be looted from us, but training in the fear of God, knowledge of the eternal truths, taste for things spiritual cannot be taken away. No power on earth can desposses us of these fruits af Cath- olic education. No power on earth can oppose them. It is our duty then to enter upon the crusade that every Christian and loyal Catholic must enter: the fight between good and evil goes on. We are confident but weak, we have been well instructed but we are inexperienced. lt is with a realization of this that we ask you to continue the work you have begun by giving us sage advice and the aid of your prayers. -MDlllQin.fdQ2!CC-'51-MKMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMNE-mmmwkm fn32l1lC5u-. These Sisters have taken charge of the pre-primary and primary classes of the Academy. From them the tiny tots of this department have re- ceived excellent instruction in fundamentals as well as that maternal care so necessary at this stage of life. By their zeal and devotedness Sisters Mary Alberta and Mary An- gela have brought a surprising development to this department, not only by an increase in number but, especially, in scholastic results. Enjoying the pri- vacy of their complete isolation and being supplied with a special playground equipped with slides and see-saws, the primary department has been allow- ed to develop as a separate unit. No expression of gratitude nor word of praise could adequately ex- press the appreciation of the Brothers for the aid the Sisters have given them. The faculty has been able to realize better than any one else the benefits reaped from their work. For this service St. Ioseph's is sincerely grateful. faQL',75lCC-Ent-AE-77354221-,AQEQZSCPEI-IfnSKC51wxQQECC3uwuHlKEmmElKQmfnHlKChwnEEtCEn-.fnSElEmPnEJECEm wnfrlhi CWWEKGW CEU' CF 'W9E4GW'ff?5XtC?5 Ui5EZGU U?5ELGU Ui55iZGW WW 'UISIKCIU' GWWKCWWHKGW WWE 'UHEKGU' GUBECCEF' 'WRST WZWGW WHKGW WBXQCWWBXWP UE55lZGU 'WJELCET' 'UZEKGU' 'WBECCEUJ VALEDTCTORY Tonight another class bids farewell to happy, carefree school days. days that will linger long in the memory, days that will serve as an inspiration. until the shades of evening fall and our life flame flickers out. These memories will bring a smile to our lips, a smile of joy, and, too, a pain of sorrow to our heart at the remembrance of our school, of old friends long since separated, and of former teachers, our guides and masters. As we look into the future, our eyes wide in anticipation, we can not but feel apprehension at its many dangers, its trials and disappointments, its joys and its sorrows. Confident, however, in the knowledge that we have been given weapons with which to conquer, we set forth with courage on this our long voyage. It is with a profound sense of reverence and appreciation that we think of our beloved teachers, those splendid men of God who have devoted their lives to form the minds, wills, and characters of youth. For four long years they have labored to impart a portion of their knowledge of God and His World to our immature minds. Their example has been our inspiration. For the trouble they have taken to form us, we offer our heartfelt thanks and our fervent prayers. And to you, our beloved parents, what are we to say? Realizing the privations and sacrifices you have so cheerfully endured to give us life and make that life a happy one, thanks seems but an empty word. Yet, in such a word we should bind up all our love, our gratitude, our prayers. Thank you for giving us our life, thank you for the care you have taken of us through the years of our childhood, and thank you above all for the Catholic education you have given us. We are together tonight perhaps for the last time on earth. In a few short months some of us will have left our homes for the battle front. Some perhaps to shed their blood in defense of their Country. But whether on the battle front or on the home front, those Christian principles of Faith, Hope, and Charity, so laboriously engraved in our hearts, will guide every step. And from the heart of every one of us will ever rise that prayer so beautifully ex- pressed by Tennyson: I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the Bar. fnlilftitl-1 H9521-A .-253 Ciil-3.-232 ll! 'WK SENlOR CLASS NOTES :X.f5C'Lf: Scarcely four years ago, we, the graduates of '44, timidly entered St. Ioseph's Academy and cautiously looked up and down the halls. True, we were now in high school and were quite boastful about it, but we were still puzzled as to what high school was like. From the ominous glances cast in our direction by the upper classmen we formed a dread premonition of what was to come, but as the weeks passed and we settled down to high school life the premonition vanished. Now, as this happy carefree life is drawing to a close, we find our hearts filled with a mingled feeling of joy and sorrow. Yes, we are uncertain as to whether we are happy or sorry to be finishing high school. We are hap- py and elated at the thought that we are about to graduate, but we are also reluctant to give up the intimate friendship that has flowered during our brief years with our teachers and classmates. Everything we have taken part in while in high school such as First Friday Communion and Mass, dances, games, and St. Ioseph's Day Celebrations have bound us to our fellow pupils and classmates with such strong bonds of friendship that we will never forget the day we will no longer be able to share their pleasant and cheerful company. Before we go to take our place in this never ending contest called life, we wish to thank the Marists Brothers of St. Ioseph's Academy, from the bot- tom of our hearts, for the sacrifices they have made to endow us with their knowledge, teaching and good example. As grateful alumnii of St. Ioseph's Academy, we solemnly promise to carry the Christian teachings and ideals of the school with us wherever we shall go and as inspiration for whatever we shall do. Banish away all doubts as to the probable authenticity of what is to follow and let us gaze with assurance at the book of time and ascertain the future in store for St. Ioseph's Class of '44 . The year is 1964. The golden sun of May gradually leaves the coppered sky midst a sprinkling of purple-tinted clouds as it slowly smks behind the distant horizon. Lady Night descends from the east and quickly, silently, spreads her star-sprinkled mantle of darkness over a peaceful Laredo. The newly rebuilt St. Ioseph's Auditorium bustles with excitement as Laredoans surge in to witness the crowning of St. Ioe's queen of '64. Eventually, we manage to squimi our way into this magnificent edifice and stumble into some of the few remaining vacant seats. As we look about us, we notice that many of the people present are old pupils of the Academy. Sitting proudly in the very front row is the great Mexican chemist, Gregorio Marcos. Practically bursting his vest buttons with pride, he is telling his old classmates, seated be- hind hirn, that the queen is one of his beautiful daughters. His classmates are seated behind him because the whole front row on the right side of the auditorium is taken up by his wife and children. Seated right behind him, dressed in colorful cowboy attire, is an unusually quiet person. With a. sly smile on his rugged face. Epitacio Resendez, the wealthiest rancher south of the Rio Grande, watches contentedly the match he has stuck into Gregorio's shoe slowly bum closer and closer to his lriend's foot. The auditorium shudders. the windows rattle, and the floor creaks: but the people. un- alarmed, expectantly tum around and greet one of Nuevo Laredo's most popular citizens. Strol- ling nonchalantly into the hall is Lauro Longoria.. a prominent figure in commercial circles. He is especially well greeted by his dearest friend, Iulio Martinez, who has saved him a couple of chairs. Iulio Martinez is one of America's top tobacco magnates who has flown all the way from his Virginia plantations just to see the Coronation and have a friendly chat with Lauro. Although Iulio sells the best tobacco on the market. we see he still prefers to roll his own from the familiar five-cent blue package. Suddenly, the roof is jarred slightly and a loud clatter is heard overhead. We look up just in time to see a vague figure, clad in flying tags, crash through the skylight. He manages to grab a girder and hang on for dear life. During the excitement a galloping of hoofs is heard outside and an impressive figure comes into the auditorium. It is none other than Helium Garcia, a prosperous veterinarian who owns a large ranch-fully one acre in area!-just out- side Laredo. With the help of cowboy Hesendez, he manages to lasso a fixture near the dang- ling figure. As the person climbs down sheepishly, we see that it is none other than aircraft- designer Cyclo Guerra. lust before passing out he manages to explain that as he was land- ing on the roof, his helicopters engine failed. When he got out of the wreck. he tripped and fell through the skylight. As we resume our seats, we are slapped on the back. Hearing a hearty, manly laugh we tum around and behold Molasses Saldana. on time for once in his life. Saldana, the master of masters in basketball. is the coach of Notre Dame's quintet. Under his leadership the University has remained undefeated in basketball for three years. Strolling in leisurely is Noe Sandoval, president of a large drug stare syndicate. As he stops to pester the prettiest of the usherettes, we see that Noe hasn't changed a bit. He is still a bachelor. still well dressed and still the Wolf. The auditorium becomes quiet, the orchestra begins to play a delightfully majestic march and the queen is escorted to her throne. We see a well-dressed, masculine person stroll onto the stage and take over the microphone. A buzz of excitment surges through the crowd as he is recognized. lt is none other than handsome Gadier Gonzalez. Ioyful, good-natured. Gadier has come all the way from New York to be master of-ceremonies at the request of his old team- mate. Gregorio Marcos. I Silence envelops the audience as the ceremonies begin. lust as the queen is crowned the silence is broken by the patter of rapidly walking feet. We turn around and behold the tall. strapping figure of Emilio de la Torre. Emilio is the renowned designer of the revolutionary aircraft Torre Diesel. After greeting us- warmly, he confides that he was held up because the air liner he was arriving on was delayed. Its Torre Diessels had failed to start. fuEQlKQias.-nE7lICCh-tfx26Q7lCCB1-r-nEQ7IC93t-.aHKChm-1dDEiQh-mS?KCh-,.-MQlKChqt-rEDEfEmmSEICh-.fiEDEfCh-MH JEZGU' 'Ui5EZGU 'W55ICCiU Ui5l1'LCEU' 'UESJTLCEU' 'WEDKGW 'UEXZCF' BTU' GWWKWWKWWEKWWKWWKGWWKWWHK mzcswzsrcsfwmswwmwrvssiswsmsvrvsrtcsvrvsrzsvfrvzsmcsnuzsstswrrmsmcmr CLASS WLLL fX:GNM'fDLZ'3 Gadier Gonzalez wills his outstanding dancing technique to Beto Sanchez. Though few, we equal in number the Senior class, and pride ourselves of having proved their superior in sports, especially bas- ketball. We gained this superiority when we beat them, or should we say smothered them under , in two consecutive basketball games. In doing this we had a slight advantage over the Seniors due to the fact that half the Iunior class composes the greater part of the A Varsity team. In taking an active interest in sports, we have not become lax in our studies, and, especially, in our religious duties. This latter statement is proven by our perfect attendance at Mass on First Friday. and the amount we have given to the Propagation of the Faith, the class having the highest average in the school. We wish to thank all our teachers for their patience in teaching us English, history, chemistry, and mathematics. We wish to thank especially our home-room teacher, Bro. Stephen, who has taught us the two hardest sub- jects, chemistry and mathematics, and also for the excellent way in which he taught us religion. We wish to thank him also for his pamphlet library. We feel sure that next year we will be capable of replacing the Senior class of 1944. CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT e E s , . .E W Edward Leyendecker, Ir. VICE-PRESIDENT . ..-s,,..- Walter W. Stein, Ir. We could not realize that we were sophomores. Because of our light-headedness, we were dubbed by our teachers the laziest class in high school. This stung our pride, and to prove the contrary we placed five members on the honor-roll the first six weeks, the only class with such a record. We did our best in sports, too. In touch-football we started off with three victories and were only defeated by the league-winning Seniors. We were not discouraged. When basketball season came, we set out with a small team of five to do battle with the mightiest. However, the so-called lower- class Freshmen defeated us in the first game, and we ended in a humble third place. Ernesto Martinez joined the Varsity while Luis Vidaurri and Paul Seitz made the B team: all of them starring for the glory of the Sophomore class. Our class elections resulted in the naming of the following officers who piloted the class through much planning but little action: Charles Fansler, Ir. . .co President Luis Vidaurri ,casa ho- Vice-President Carlos Benavides ov -ow Treasurer Paul Seitz s....v,,,,,,,,,,,o ,ooovoo . -..M Secretary Now that the school year is drawing to an end, we wish to thank all the brothers and especially Bro. Iames, our home-room teacher, for their pat- ient tutoring through the year. We are all a little more nervous than usual for this is our first year in high school. What fearful adventures are in store for us? All this timidity soon vanishes as class es succeed each other in monotonous routine and we get used to being called Freshmen. But we also lose our determination for hard work. It does not take us long to find we are back in the same old rut-and staying after school to pay homeworks. Most terrible of all, sorrow descends on the class and friend- ships are severed as a cruel separation takes place in our Algebra class where pupils and engineers must part. Time flits by and basketball season opens. The Freshmen are de- termined they shall not be licked . We breeze through our intramural sched- ule without a defeat and emerge the champions of '44. This is largely due to the leadership of our captain, Arturo Galan. Our contributions to the Missions and the Red Cross are as generous as we can make them. for we know that in this time of need it is our duty to give till it hurts. Now we have arrived at the end of the year and we look back with a smile at the nervousness of that first day of class. lt's goodbye to the Fresh- man year and up the road to Sophomoreville. ?XEmmHlKCEawrE-?ZlEmmSECCh-.fnE?XfCh-,t-1d'.?lltChwnS?EtEn, lil C3'21e-253 El C52-'REQ 715 En-.-QED 'Et C51-.463 'PK Cin-tt-if-7 359321, Ch-.4-23 K E21-.PRED ll! Seven years ago when St. Ioseph's opened its doors to La- redo youth we accepted the invitation and began our rather long journey. Looking back upon these past years, we daresay that they mean much to us, because it is here that we learned how to serve our neighbor. our state, and our God. Nature-like we had our bright and dark days, but remembering our school motto Ad astra per aspera, to the stars through difficulties, we took all in good stride. Touch-football, basketball and softball, with their ups and downs have been for us a sort of bitter-sweet: bitter, because Victory did not smile upon us all the time and sweet, because we cherish the memories of those games. During the basketball season we were ably represented in the Varsity and Iunior Varsity by P. Gonzalez, F. Acosta, I. Cantu, and F. Enriquez. On St. Ioseph's day, our annual track meet, P. Gonzalez, our all-around athlete, won several firsts and thus swelled the number of points for his team. The Gram- mar school basketball league offered an opportunity to some other eighth graders to prove themselves. This is a time for generosity and sacrifice. To do our bit in propagat- ing our faith and alleviating human sufferings, we gave gladly to the missions and the Red Cross. These daily contributions taught us the noble lesson of Christ-like charity. With what measure ye mete, it shall be meted to you again. In return, God showered us with many graces and blessings. Now, as we are about to start as Freshmen, we want to take this op- portunity to express our gratitude. First of all, we want to thank our dear par- ents. who have not only cared for us since our cradle days, but have, through their unstinted sacrifices, made it possible for us to attend this Academy. We want to thank the devoted Brothers who through their wise counsels and patient efforts have helped and encouraged us along the rugged path of knowledge. Our sincere thanks also go to the Seniors and the other high school members who gave us good example not only in sports and class activities, but also in the fine art of giving generously to charitable organizations. God willing, we hope September will find us back again as Freshmen of St. Ioseph's Academy. While most of the boarders were from Texas, many came from Mexico, and three even from far away Honduras. Many of the boarders participated in the inter-scholastic sports ot St. Ioseph's and played stellar roles. All of them supported the teams loyally. Although wartime prohibited the use of the school buses for the number of outings we should like to have had, Brother William's planning and understanding through the year made it very pleasant. Land, sea, and air have submitted to it as to a new sovereign worthy of their fiercest homage. Yet, one of the most charac- teristic aspects of this new master is its chameleon-like changefulness. It is forever changing. Almost over night old theories are discarded for new, meth- ods vary from year to year, a new discovery will bring with it a broad vista never dreamed of before. The modern school must keep pace with these changes if it is to equip its students to take their rightful place in society. For this reason, St. Ioseph's has always laid particular stress on the importance of its science deparment. A new laboratory was opened this year, new equipment was acquired, ap- paratus to explain the latest developments in chemistry and aeronautics re- placed outmoded instruments, all at a considerable cost. That the results have warranted this emphasis may be seen in the grati- fying work done by former students of St. Ioseph's in the different colleges or branches of the services they have entered. With one acclaim they thank the Brothers for having prepared them so well to carry on their studies in the dif- ferent fields of science. -iQE,'?lIfCiu-.fnE7FKEm.-iEQE!EnwrE3lKEnw2EQlK2mfnEECEnwnEQElChwnEQ7KEas.-reibllftiin-..-idbllfiiawnfblllfins llltiu-.t-IEQUJICEH-i 'lltifum-nEQllCC5'1..-xiblllihsfiib -nEQECEmfnEQECCh-,f2EECEmfnSElQawnSElC.'Lm.nSE!EmfnSlKChwn57 .-153515652-.fnfblltiinsf-n':'Q7Il GENERAL SCIENCE CHEMISTRY GU' '-In 'UBHGWWHJKGW'b5E5l1tCIU UE55lGU 'Ui55RC':Fl 'iG355IC.CZU 'UHEZGWhU255E.GW UE55ICCEUJ Ui?52lCIU UE55IQGU'bU25lKCEU'bU?55TlGW W5'i.CZ5 bU?5i7K.C95 iUE55KCiU U?55KCFf' UE5Z1KG3 W55ltC'iU rKWWKWWKGWWHGWWKWWMWWKWWGKGWWEXW LIBRARY FXJTCV' Under the skillful and expert guidance of the Librarian, Brother Iames, the Academy's Library has been considerably expanded during recent years. Since September 1942, over six hundred books have been added to the collect- tion. Recently a considerable number of books in aeronautics, chemistry, and sports has been added to the Library. A Britannica Ir. set were donated to the Academy by Mr. M. Acosta Ir. All fiction and non-fiction books have been classified and catalogued according to the Dewey Classification system. Library of Congress cards have been used in the cataloging. Assisting Brother lames in his work are four jolly and efficient helpers. Roberto Sanchez is now an expert in writing the call numbers on the back of the books. Billy Robards swiftly, yet accurately, files the L.C. cards in the catalog. Roberto Volpe and Luis Vidaurri see to it that order and cleanliness reign in the Library. READING MAKETH A FULL MAN... was the opinion of Francis Bacon. Intra- mural competition got off to a flying start with a league of tackle for the young- er set and one of touch football for inter-class competition. In the tackle league Iusto Leyendecker led his crew to victory as captain of the Maroons. The Seniors won all their games in the touch league with credit due to the heady playing of the SaldaiiaJGadier combination. Basketball held its privileged place in St. Ioseph's timetable with six do-or-die class teams fighting for top honors. The humble Freshmen emerged vic- torious after handing in an aggregate of 123 points to their opponents 62. Ar- turo Galan starred as captain of the team and its principal scorer. The St. Ioseph's Day field and track meet came off with the usual thrills and color in spite of the rain that forced it into a second day's running. The practice period that preceded the meet showed they Whites had a slight edge over their opponents. The final results bore out the augury as the Maroons bowed to a 81-101 defeat. Individual honors went to Pascual Gonzalez, a White of the junior division, who placed first in five events and bested the seniors in high-jump and broad-jump. mSKEmt-1QE,?MEm.-rEQHCiasmHUC3a1.-i',QEfQmmHZK2mfxE,QXEmm3KChsf2S'27LfC?a-AmHXCEm4EElEmm3lKEmmBE!Em.-1rEQXtCiusmElKCLa-mHlKChwxEQECQ51q INTRANIURAL SPORTS PICTURES Ciaffxpy H Cggibyl afar ZAR Af J?mf'e fm-0-0-0... The teamwork and spirit of the squad was excellent, and to this as Well as to the shrewd coaching of Victor Wiquel Iuarez was due success on the hardwoods. To the experience of the four returning lettermen: Felipe de la Garza, Roberto Sanchez, Roberto Volpe, and Hector Saldafia, was added the superb playing of the new recruit Gadier Gonzalez. The squad began its season with four victories and upon entering the city League, they gave a good account of themselves against the more ex- perienced teams from the Gunnery School. The Antlers were occuppying fifth place when the league was discontinued, much against their hope of better- ing their standing. To bring the season to a close, the squad travelled to San Antonio as guests of Central Catholic High School. There they played two hard-fought games but yielded to Central and St. Anthony by a small margin. The statistics show how well the team played.
