We, who are privileged to live in this age of scientific discoveries, are often awed b th ' ' ' y e genius of man to rnvent or dis- cover something new. When we discover or invent something that is going to help the world to be a better place in which to l' ive, we want to tell the whole world about our discovery. We want to broadcast it. W the radio as the best means of commu ' ' nicating our information to the world in the shortest pos- sible time. ' hen we think of broadcasting we think of As students of St. Ioseph's Academy we want to broadcast a message of peace and love to the whole world Our message ' . 1S not new, rather it is a message that is being forgotten in th' ' ' is age of materialism and secularism. In these few pages of THE ACADEMY we Want to show how we spend our high school days preparing to broadcast Christ to the world, so that our message will go to the far reaches oi the world. ' HE AIR l O SACRED HEART OF JESUS, filled with infinite love, broken by my ingratitude, pierced by my sins, yet loving me still, accept the consecration that I make to Thee, of all that I am and all that I have. Take every faculty of my soul and body, and draw me, day by day, nearer and nearer to Thy Sacred Side, and there teach me Thy blessed ways. HEUIEATIU TO THE SACRED HEART OF IESUS, fountain of lite and holi- ness, Source of spiritual strength amid present trials, Who gives courage for sacri- fices in the future, We, the Senior Class of 1952, dedicate this volume of THE ACADEMY. The SODALITY OF OUR LADY strives to teach all loyal followers of Mary how to draw closer to the great Heart of Iesus with its motto, To Iesus Through Mary. Spiritual strength and ultimate growth in holi- ness is achieved through daily Mass and Com- munion, Rosary, office of the Blessed Virgin, almsgiving, and catechical work. Retreat, Marian Day, a Day of Recollection, May Day and World Sodality Day complete the plan. The CATHOLIC STUDENTS MISSION CRU-I SADE radios constant prayers to the throne of Heaven for those laboring to bring souls into the kingdom of God, and wires financial assistf ance to those in need. That the mission program is successful is seen by the fact that in twenty-five years the number of Catholic missions has risen from 400 to GOO. Academy crusaders join in all mission projf I I ects and thereby become along with the mis' sionary priests and sisters I-Ieralds of the Gospel. K SOLEALITY OFFICERS lvl. Azictrrn, Vice. Pieteci: R. I THE PHHTLIHHT As sports occupy a prominent place in the field of radio so it does at station S.l.A. lt is in the field of BASKETBALL that the greatest in- terest is displayed. Basketball is perhaps the only competitive sport that wins the hearts and interest of all students. Coached by Miss Dorothy Ornelson, athletic director, the varsity this year has played out- standing games in both league and non-league competition. ln league competition a round-robin tourna- ment was played with the following schools: Ursuline Academy, Nerinx Hall, Xavier High School, and lncarnate Word Academy. Every game was highlighted by close decisions, many of which were determined by a one-point margin. The varsity was captained by Maureen Car- ney and Lane Kennedy with Margaret Quigley as team manager. Much of the success of the basketball var- sity can be attributed to the excellent backing of the student body who faithfully recited the rosary before each league game. The cheer- leaders too should receive much credit for the splendid spirit they displayed at all games. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION OFFICERS D M' rs Vice-President M. Page Forty-Nine F TURB Pllllllllll TIME: November, I977 PLACE: Ivory Room of Hotel Iefferson OCCASION: A 25th wedding anniversary Ladies and Gentlemen, this is MARY ANN BOYLES speaking to you from the Ivory Room of the Iefferson Hotel. Through the courtesy of station S.I.A., I am here to greet the graduates of l952 attending this lavish anniversary party, given for the former LANE KENNEDY. I see approaching me CAROLYN KELLEY. Carolyn is surpassing Betty Hutton and appear- ing in many hits as Annie Oakley. With her is NORA IEAN LITTEKEN. Norma just made it in from Hollywood, where she completed a new musical for M.G.M. Speaking of singers, EILEEN KING has appeared in many of the Municipal Opera productions. Oh, hello Mary! MARY TOENIES. ladies and gentlemen, of the St. Louis Symphony Orches- tra. I am told that MARY AGNES DUNSING, who was always interested in movie stars, now knows many of them personally since they were her former classmates. For instance, HELEN SHAKE who hastened to stardom with her first movie, Sugar Plum. One of the grads unable to make the party this evening is MARILYN PITT, who is one of the famous hair stylists. You hear a lot of IULIE OLIVASTRO'S recording of I Love You a Bushel and a Peck. Look who is coming in now! Isn't that MARI- LYN HENDERSON? She was always worried about calories in school. It seems to me she's getting a little Stauder. That's MARILOU HANLON with her. I still haven't forgotten Marilou's locker 93, which was equipped with a built-in drug store. Anyone would have been proud of our class. IAYNE MERZ has perfected an automatic see- ing eyeball to save vim, vigor, and vitality. IO ANN MOUND invented a jet propelled plane for girls coming in from Valley Park. There is DOROTHY MEINERS, who is experienced in the world of science. She has invented the mys- teiy drug to keep everyone awake in chemistry. Also in the chemistry field is BEVERLY BUT- LER. She is still perfecting and experimenting with the chemical reaction H2O2, commonly known as peroxide. Science was gifted with a book written by CAROLYN LINSTROTH on the application of heat to inflammable substances. Here is MARIETTA GROB. Her humorous novel, Superstitions at Slumber Parties, has sold over two million copies. SALLY HUNGATE is the author of a revised edition of the diction- ary, dedicated to Sister Emmelia. Hello, Ioanne! That was IOANNE CROWLEY with her husband. Their new home is entirely different in appearance because of the absence of trees for safety's sake. There's BONNIE BROWNING. Remember how she was always racing to class? She and her husband are in charge of Fairmont. MAU- REEN CARNEY is also here. She has traveled around during the past years with her husband who is a professional basketball coach. I know we won't get around to all the guests today, but I did hear from some of the girls away from home. MARCIA AHEARN is play- ing at the Paramount, replacing the late Eddie Cantor with her roving eyes. ANITA BROWN has returned to the South. According to Anita the scenery and surroundings are much better. PAULA SHAPIRO'S dream finally came true. She now lives in New York. Real George, huh! Paula. ELMA AVALOS has returned to New Mexico to live but still speaks of her wonderful four years in St. Louis. MARY ELIZABETH FRIEDMANN is also out of town and has finally learned to ice skate from a very able instructor. There's MARGARET MENTH. Margaret de- signs wedding banquets for the more fortunate of the '52 grads. With her is SHARON HORACE who has achieved fame in dress designing. She became even more popular when she gave St. Ioe girls a new uniform. It is air condi- tioned in the summer months and heat ab- sorbent in the winter. MARGARET ZICKEL is specializing in ceram- ics, and has sold her famous collection of Page Fifty muggs . To prevent others embarrassment ANGELA VITIELLO has designed a seli-adjust- able veil. It is guaranteed not to fall of in a Christmas Play. How are you Kay! KAY SHAW just passed. She's working for the F.B.l. helping in the search for their most dangerous suspect, her prospect. There's a group of grads famous in the field of medicine and science. You've probably heard a lot about SHIRLEY RYFFEL, who hung out her shingle after graduating from St. Louis University Medical School. She's assisted by SHIRLEY MILLIGAN, who decided to make a career of nursing during class in Home Nursing. DOROTHY HUGHES is also a nurse and has cared for many of her former classmates' chil- dren. DOTTIE HELLMAN is a herbalist. From these plants, which supply medicinal needs, she has equipped the pharmacy at St. Iohn's Hospital where PAT DONAHUE is in charge. Pat says it is amazing how many of her former classmates she has seen through the year when there are additions to their families. Another member who has gone far in the professional field is PAT DAVIES. Pat has ap- peared in many fashion magazines as a photo- graphic model. MARY ELLEN WILLIAMS has become prominent as an instructor at the Y p that is, when her time isn't taken up with Martin and Lewis. Coming toward me now is MARY VIRGINIA GALLEANO, who was given a job with the Public Service Company since she did such an accurate job of collecting pass money in her senior year. IANET LAMM Works in the same office. She is still jimmying the keys. I was just told that some of the former grads still see a lot of St. Ioe. CHRISTINA EFTHIM goes back each year to take the year book pic- tures. In the college CAROL STRIEBEL is teach- ing in the home economics department. If you look in the Academy art room you'll find many inspiring drawings by MARY AGNES O'REILLY, which have gained national recogni- tion. llll Ill Pltlllllttllll The Academy's Mothers' Club recently elected SYLVIA MUEHLING as its president. KATHLEEN SWEENEY has come to the rescue of many girls by setting up a dating bureau with boys from Chaminade. IOAN MOONEY'S daughter is a freshman at St. joe this year. She is renewing her mother's path to Parkmoor. St. Ioe girls are also acquainted with CAROLE FRITSCH, who after many years of undying patronage, has finally become the sole owner of Green Lea. This surely must be SUE WHITTINGTON. Hi, Sue! Where have you been keeping your- self all these years? Oh, I decided to con- tinue the taxi service I started at St. joe and now I drive a station wagon for the Vatterott nursery. Kathy specializes in European chil- dren. Running close to Kathy's nursery, LOR- ETTA TRACY is keeping up her family tradi- tion that they are Cheaper by the Dozen. ANITA SIGNORELLI has just moved from Chicago. She surely keeps her Doctor Bill well in hand. IOANN SMITH lives in the same apartment community with Anita. She is con- stantly reminded by her husband that I am Dutt and unto Dutt thou shalt return. ROSEMARY ROBBEN just passed by. She still looks the same. I-Ier oldest boy is now a pledge to That certain fraternity at Washing- ton U. Speaking of universities, ANN PINCK- ERT recently received an honorary diploma from Notre Dame because of her frequent visits. BETTY NESSLEIN has invited the whole class and their families to a party at the new mod- ern restaurant of which she is the co-owner. Speaking of ownin g businesses, IACKIE SPAETH is now one of the executives at Lam- bert's Furniture Store. IACKIE LEIENDECKER also holds an important position. Much of her time is taken up solving the rudiments of the basement at Famous. Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, that's all the time we have here. Thank you for being with us on this festive occasion. Now I will turn you over to S.I.A. Studios. Bye, now. Page Fifty-One GArfie1d 6297 The Loveliesf Fabrics . . . Alols A. Wmterer Ophcal Co. Dr. George A.
