For the seniors, the events recorded within these pages mark the termination of four years of GCLDEN DAYS spent Within the granite walls of St. loseph's Academy. This book, then, is for them the final link that forms the chain of high school years. For the other classes, juniors, sophomores, freshmen, these pages hold memories of a year's work and play at their alma mater. Page Fifty-Three if 0 .food egnto tile uture Our scene opens in the old familiar business area of DeBallvlere and Delmar. We are just inside the old car barn which is about to be torn down. Yes, it seems a pity to see an old landmark disappear. But times change and the old must make room for the new. For at the present time St. Louis is one of the most modern of cities. With her super-atom busses no one finds much time or use for street cars. Imagine anyone riding those things twenty years ago. Why people waited as long as ten minutes for a street car. lt took at least forty-live minutes to ride downtown. Why, in our super-atom busses we moan if it takes more than three and a half minutes to get anywhere. But, hushl I believe there are voices coming from the car barn. Why it's the Dlnkey '04, the old I-Iodlamont and a few other cronies talking over old times. Let's listen! Dinkey is talking. Well, I don't believe that there was a happier street car than '04, It I did seem something of a dreamer I guess tt's just that I was waiting to see if all I predicted ol some of my everyday passengers would come true. It seems like yesterday when I was jiggling up and over those rolling hills out past Clayton and through Ladue. Those were cold mornings when the kids were piled in four layers of clothes. I guess I was one of the most fashionable cars this slde of city limits. In the summer I was air-conditioned. I never had to worry about ventilation with the open air ceiling. And did l strut when my nose was on one side of the tracks, my rear on the other, and those sitting in the middle had an open air view of the country. On winter days I looked like some king-sized dragon with my coal smoke rolling out of my spout. Wlth the great clang of my bell I used to set the hills trembling for miles around. Now about those youngsters I used to transport to and from. The class that interested me especially was the 1950 class of St, Ioseph's Academy. They were just juniors when I retired and that day I predicted their future and they predicted mine. What I said they could be doing twenty years hence is just what each one ls doing. 'l'heone llenke has just published her latest book, 'The Marblesf However, lt ls not too clear at the end. It's a Latin book with a built-in pony. Pat Hoerr. as mayor of Normandy, can be heard every week delivering in a booming voice her orations. Iacqule Smith is still collecting on her book, 'One Hun- dred Iokes and I-Iow to Understand Them.' I wonder. Ioan Rogers rings all the bells for the departure ot planes at the airport. Ann Barthslme, who still rides busses to Columbia, is doing well at Montaldo's- as head purchaser. The girls hear from Pat Gallagher occasionally. Pat lives in Fulton, Missouri, with her doctor husband. Ann Colier and Kathy Carney, the first girls to play on the Bllltken quintet, were a good reason for St. Louis win- ning the NIT tournament in New York. The score was 101 to 10. Toni Sassin is sending her girls to SIA by helicopter from the 'Developments,' a new housing project begun by her husband. Nancy Rorert finally received a pass on the North- western Special. As his gag writer she does very well. Susie Switzer is giving Elsa Maxwell plenty of com- petition with her parties. She is the hostess of the town. Well, l'm getting tired of talking.
