May 21. The vessel had as its captain, leanhe Roth, its first indie, Ann Barthelrney its recorder of events, Sue Vallar: and as treasurer, Marion Harris Together, the four led a crew of sixty enthusiastic lunicrs in reaching the Prom and distinguished themselves by being the first sailors to give a Prori at Meaazlle Hail. The ship had several members recording happenings for the log published rncnthly and called the SAIOAC. Those receiving ri.edals for their excellent work were Marian O'Mearf:, Ann Colfer, Marybel Steele, Mary Agnes Slaughter, ludy Wulfmeyer, Mary Murphy, and Betty Byrne. Officers of the Athletic Association were Helen Speck- art and lo-Ann Gratiaa. Together the two led several sailors to take leading parts in the Spring Horse Show. These sailors were Mary C. Martin, Betty Lou Vogt, leanrie Rarnacciotti, Ginny G'Hare, Audrea Haley, Ioan Kutterer, Dolores Lowther, and Pat Hughes. These two officers along with Sue Vallar, Kathy Car- ney, Shirley Martin, and Ann Colfer were members of the basketball varsity. Pep Club officers Paddy Good- win and leanne Ptarnaciotti led the crew in support of their team. To make sure that the sarlors on this voyage did not neglect their spiritual duties, Mary Claire Murphy and ludy Wulfmeyer, Sodality officers, led the ship in pray- ers and good works. Our rhission representatives, Shir- ley Martin and Virginia Breher, with Dolores Lowther as mission leaders, paved the way for us in contribut- ing to the care of other souls. On the Sodalitys big celebration, May Day, the luniors were proud to have as May Maids Theone Klenke and lackie Smith. Sodal- ity representative was lane Lux. At Christmas time, in the annual play, Christmas Carnival , several of the vessels sailors had outstand- ing parts. These sailors were Mary Vassely, Mary Murphy, Ann Kohl, Rosemary Fgscher, Pat Hughes, Shirley Martin, ludy Wiilfrzieyer, Sue Vallar, Pat Gal- lagher, lo-Ann Gratiaa, Nancy Rcrert, Susie Switzer, Paddy Goodwin, Dolores Lowther, and Audrea Haley. And so with great gratitude to God for a safe jour- ney, and with thanks to our wonderful moderators, Sis- ter Aiphonsa and Sister Madeline, and with the loyal support of every crew niember, the vessel Iunior Classw finished its voyage happily. ndigna Having had one years experience in the navigaticrp of ships, we started on our second cruise into the realms of Knowledge on Sept. 8, l948. The first entry in the Qcg concerns the election of the ships officers. Thcse reri re senting the second year class are: Marce Gratiair president: Margie Kelly, vice-president: Ioan Barry secretary: and Betty Iones, treasurer. Under their leadership a fitting initiation of the freshman class was held at Shaw Park on Oct. 5. Though our principal object was learning how ta become good sailors, all was not work. This was showr. by the fact that two of our number, Iackie Baker and Gratiaa, made the hockey varsity, and six Marce Marce Gratiaa, Mary Hackett, loan Houlihan, Dotty Maher, Pat Moore, and Nancy Cleary, made the basketball varsity. They were cheered on to victory by the Pep Club, by the sophomore cheerleader, Pai Fawcett. Fourteen actresses from the second year crew acted in the Christmas play, supporting Florence Spack, wha had one of the leading roles. In the fields of art and writing, our crew shone par- ticularly well. From six second year entries in the poster contest sponsored by the St. Louis Christmas Carols Association, Doris Nesslein merited honorable mention. Six of the crew had their poems published in the National Anthology of High School Poetry, and five helped edit a page of OUR SUNDAY VISITGR. The week after Easter a group of sailor maids from the school, including eight second years, enjoyed a tour of the nation's capital, via Annapolis. In the realm of things spiritual, our mission repree sentatives, Jackie Baker and Doris Nesslein encouraged us to support wholeheartedly the home and foreign missions. Directed by our Sodality representatives, George Heiner and Rita Riley, various projects were under- taken for the purpose of honoring Our Lady. Chief among these was the May Day ceremonies, for which Mary Hackett and Mary Margaret Marsh were chosen to serve in the queens court. Early in Iune we learned how many proved then: selves capable of manning the Iunior vessel next year. Many had so proved their ability throughout the year that they were exempt from the tests. The second week in lune began a three-rricnths' sl e leave until sailing time next Septenrlier. ,1, lffrrry. .ww-r:'f11ry.' JI. firrzlirlfl. 1 esiff til. Kvlly, l'i l'-1Il'f'NifIl'lI,.' II, -Iwztfw. Varsity set sail in February un- der the coaching of Ioy Prost. Captained by Ioanne Monahan, veteran of many seasons of basketball playing, the team set full-sail for victory. In thirteen encounters with the enemy, the S.I.A. varsity managed to Win nine while losing four. The defeats were handed the team by Incarnate Word, Nerinx, Villa Duchesne, and City House. Despite the four losses, the season was the most successful one in the his- tory of basketball at S.I.A.
