K -- dI. --xy.. i Af I li NWS Mika -'Y lm 'II' BUSINESS The study of a well-planned course in business subjects devel- ops in the students the ability to handle mental operations with numbers rapidly and accurately and at the same time develops in them an understanding of bus- iness situations which will enable them to solve problems of the type that are of everyday occur- rence in modern business. It is evident that to achieve this aim there must be a nice bal- ance between what constitutes the practical part of the course and the part that sets forth the principles and situations which the student will meet upon enter- ing the business world. A knowledge of the way in which modern business is trans- acted is a real asset to every young man or woman whatever line of work may be followed later. A general knowledge of the various phases of commercial activity on the part of all well- informed members of our com- munity is of inestimable value to foster financial prosperity. Yet, every student must be convinced that business principles are valueless when not in har- mony with Christian ethics. Probity must never be discarded under pretense of efficiency. LANGUAGES To be able to express one,s self correctly in two languages is the prerogative of many among us. We are convinced that to multi- ply our language abilities is to multiplv our chances of success. Clear, correct pronunciation, intelligent sell'-expression, logical techniques. current good usage. appraisal and development of creative abilities, and guidance in literary appreciation are the hasic objectives of any language course. These aims are achieved bv a varied and stimulating array of bona fide activities' which origi- nate in the pupil's own dav-by day language experiences. Thus the television, the radio, the class play, the class critique, oral reading. and class discussions. all are used as incentives to clear and effective speech. Our wealth of informal and functional grammar must be woven into interesting speech and writing activities to promote at all opportunities respect for good usage. SCIENCES The scientist's way of thinking and working has proven to be a most reliable method. An ade- quate scientific course must lead to a better understanding and better daily use of the kinds of scientific knowledge associated with daily human experience. We must develop a usable fund of interesting and worth-while knowledge about common things. Sciences contribute helpful and trustworthy habits of thinking by compelling us to judge the com- mon experiences which fall with- in the fields of science. Particular interests and abili- ties of pupils are frequently re- vealed in science studies and by recognizing and directing them, more effective and more profit- able work may be accomplished in vocations or later studies. Science has caused the modern world to advance with gigantic strides. To live intelligently and most usefully everyone needs a considerable measure of under- standing and appreciation of at least the more ordinary and en- gaging aspects of Science. A little this and a little that . . Hatch it Hash. Look at what I found. 41
