The ascent has not always been smooth. To some, the high cliffs of mathematics, the huge boulders of science, or the gap- ing precipices of foreign languages have appeared as unsurmountable obstacles. From time to time, one of our number, preferring the green mountain-slope of Well-Enough to the higher peak of Greater Knowledge, would drop on the way. Others have wavered in their decision, but encouraged by the fine example of their predecessors who have so valiantly persevered up the steep ascent, a good number of us have steadily, if slowly, progressed upward. The patience and understanding of skillful guides, our devoted teachers, have smoothed many a rough spot for our unexperienced feet. When tempted to slide down an easy trail back to the Vale of Mediocrity, we have been prompted by them to maintain the struggle along the rougher path of Good Scholarship. Now that we see the last year coming around the bend, since we realize how vitally important in view of the future is the steadfast pursuit of our aim, we look forward without too much apprehension to undertaking the conquest of the summit. With a proud flourish, we raise still higher 'fthe Blue and Goldn, dear symbol of a school we love. May it wave over the last period of our ascent as it has waved over our prolonged efforts of the past, to serve, at the end of another year, as a sign of our victory when at last our goal is reached. 2 in-n lil ,df r m l. What a dreadful experience lay before us! As we look back it is easy to see that these were needless fears. We fully realize that four long years of difficult work were ahead, so we lost no time in trying to adjust ourselves to our new and pleasant environment. In those early days, we began to realize that we were now responsible for our education and for the upholding of the ideals and traditions of our school. Little by little, the days have gone by and with them the trying and depressing moments of examinations. Every day we strove to reach our goal of success. It has not been too difficult because our teachers worked hard and succeeded in presenting the studies to us in a most in- teresting manner. The Seniors are bidding farewell to their Alma Mater, We are happy to see that in June 1952 they have reached with honor the goal which they entered upon four years ago, but it is also with some sorrow that we see them depart for we did look up to these dignified Seniors as friends in need. To all we wish success in their future career. As we step up into the Sophomore year, we have visions of another success- ful year in our school. We are proud of our class and its achievements and hope ST. We are convinced that to multi- ply our language abilities is to multiplv our chances of success. Clear, correct pronunciation, intelligent sell'-expression, logical techniques. current good usage. appraisal and development of creative abilities, and guidance in literary appreciation are the hasic objectives of any language course. These aims are achieved bv a varied and stimulating array of bona fide activities' which origi- nate in the pupil's own dav-by day language experiences. Thus the television, the radio, the class play, the class critique, oral reading. and class discussions. all are used as incentives to clear and effective speech. Our wealth of informal and functional grammar must be woven into interesting speech and writing activities to promote at all opportunities respect for good usage. It is evident that to achieve this aim there must be a nice bal- ance between what constitutes the practical part of the course and the part that sets forth the principles and situations which the student will meet upon enter- ing the business world. A knowledge of the way in which modern business is trans- acted is a real asset to every young man or woman whatever line of work may be followed later. A general knowledge of the various phases of commercial activity on the part of all well- informed members of our com- munity is of inestimable value to foster financial prosperity. Yet, every student must be convinced that business principles are valueless when not in har- mony with Christian ethics. Probity must never be discarded under pretense of efficiency. Five equals four plus one, hein? Future secretaries? No speed limits here. 40 SCIENCES The scientist's way of thinking and working has proven to be a most reliable method. An ade- quate scientific course must lead to a better understanding and better daily use of the kinds of scientific knowledge associated with daily human experience. We must develop a usable fund of interesting and worth-while knowledge about common things. Sciences contribute helpful and trustworthy habits of thinking by compelling us to judge the com- mon experiences which fall with- in the fields of science. Particular interests and abili- ties of pupils are frequently re- vealed in science studies and by recognizing and directing them, more effective and more profit- able work may be accomplished in vocations or later studies. Science has caused the modern world to advance with gigantic strides. To live intelligently and most usefully everyone needs a considerable measure of under- standing and appreciation of at least the more ordinary and en- gaging aspects of Science. A little this and a little that . . Hatch it Hash. Look at what I found. 41 MATHEMATICS The intricacies of algebra ant. the labyrinthian reasonings of geometry are forever a source of wonder as well as a challenge to most students. They soon be- come aware that in these fields evasions of the imagination into the realms of fancy are the lethal blows dealt to one's success. In these subjects where pin- point accuracy in reasoning and operation is an obvious must, the student finds a much needed training in methodical work. Al- though the development of emo- tions through literature must not be slighted, we must emphasize that the mind is disciplined in its judging and reasoning abilities through mathematics. The attention required in the solution of enigmatic problems and the perspicacity and method necessary to follow the subtle and intricate patterns of Euclid's mind are later transferred to problems and situations of one's life and prove to be of tremen- dous help in finding adequate solutions.
