I -ze lf i i -.-I BEGIN THE DAY WITH Goo I met God in the morning, When my day was at its best, And His presence came like sunrise- Like glory, filled my breast. All day long this presence lingered, All day long He stayed with meg And I sailed in perfect calmness O'er a very troubled sea. Other ships were torn and battered, Other ships were sore distressedg But the winds that seemed to drive them, Brought to me, a peace and rest. Then I thought of other mornings, With a keen remorse of mind, When I, too, had loosed the moorings With this presence left behind. I So I think I've found the secret, Learned through many a troubled way: You must meet God in the morning, I If you want Him through the day. -sisuacrsn -V- 'rnn JOSEPHIUM PageN1ne I REVEREND FATHER ANTHONY L. He got Redm- bauledu and said, H Eugene took my Blu-ball - dn-a-bell which PVerIined with 'Fezuls-teeth . Then Charles, who enlllagersu in being overcome by Fettig ue, came up and told them that he had seen the two Marguerites, the Kiefers oi the keys who were always Laughlin, who seemed 'llIerry-ann Dauerz-lzaueruted, because they had taken the Blu-ballf' MARGARET KIIZFER l DIARY Lou LAUGHLIN '40 nl' Page Twenty-two T H is J o s E P H 1 U M HIGH SCHOOL CRUISE N A SUNNY DAY in September, 1938, twenty-three smiling Llqfj boys and girls marched up the gang plank of the Good Ship S.J.S. It had been anchored the last of May, and still sat waiting to anchor-aweigh with the new crew. As our pilot we chose Marguerite Durmg and, as her first- mate, Herbert Gillespie. lvlary Lou Laughlin and Robert Dauen- hauer, the next two in rank, helped set the course for the nine months' journey. We had a roaring send off by the Sophomores, which was Freshman initiation. CThey said we couldn't be Fresh- ies unless they initiated us- and we believed them.J However, our Good Ship weathered the storm and it was smooth sailing for the rest of the journey. Then, too, there was a one-act play we put on called Thirty Million. I believe everyone who saw it enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed putting it on. The cast consisted of Mary Lou Laughlin, Jean Elliott, Robert Dauenhauer, Her- bert Gillespie, and Edward Blubaugh. Every once in a while the lifeboats were lowered and the crew took time out for a basketball or a football game. We won some and We lost some. But it was hard work for the team and they should be congratulated. When Father Letko called, All hands on deck! during football season, Robert Dauenhauer, Charles Spies, Herbert Gil- lespie, and Joseph Redenbaugh answered and helped play the first game against the Elwood High Freshman-Sophomore team. Then, after the football season, came time for basketball. Herbert Gillespie, Charles Spies, Joseph Redenbaugh, and Robert Dauenhauer were the only Freshmen on the team. Besides the things mentioned, there was the C.Y.O. Everyone joined its meetings and helped to keep it up in every way possible. lt is a success throughout our diocese because of Bishop Noll's love of youth. After Reception and Commencement Exercises, we cast anchor until time for sailing in September. The same boys and girls reported to the Good Ship in September, but there was one extra. He said his name was Bill Sigward. He hit it off pretty well with the boys and girls. He was selected to set the Good Ship on its merry way. This year was our time to get even with the grade below us fthe Freshmenj And we attempted to do so, but--. The Fresh- men proved to be really green when some did not show up at the -V- T H E J o s E P H I U M Page Tfzuenfy fhree initiation, and some who did were not very good sports about the whole thing. But We were softies, so we skipped the little matterx, and sailed along smoothly. In football, this year brought many more games than did the year before. The team consisted of Joe Redenbaugh, Herbert Gil- lespie, Charles Spies, John Kelich, Edward Blubaugh, Robert Dauenhauer, and Larry lVIagers, all of whom did some very good work this football season. They won against Cathedral at lndi- anapolis, 18 to O, which is going some. But so much for football. There is a basketball season, too. Gur players were Gillespie, Red- enbaugh, and Spies. They proved their ability by their high scoring through the games. They will probably help another Good Ship in the future. Next on the list is the class play, The Nutt Family, which was surely a success. The characters were: lVIary Ann Biltz, as Meta Nutt, Robert Dauenhauer, as P. Nutty Margaret Kiefer, as Ima Nutt: and Herbert Gillespie, as VVall Nutt. Other players were: Billy Sigward, lllarguerite Durm, Mary Lou Laughlin, Mary Werline, Jean Elliott, Betty Connors, and Annabell Hodge. And we can't forget our colored folks, Cerise and Orestus, played by Angela and Ed Blubaugh. They were really magnificent as darkies. We chose as our May Queen, Marguerite Durmg and as her Maid of Honor, Mary Werline. They made May Day a very memorable occasion. Every year the girls go to Tipton and celebrate with many other girls from neighboring towns at the St. Joseph Academy. But the last few years there have been more and more boys going, and this year there were many more boys and girls from St. Jo- seph's Good Ship. And we always have the time of our lives. Our ship's log was christened The fosephiumf' and every one of the crew will enjoy it as long as they live. After our Reception and Commencement, our voyage on the Good Ship S.J.S. will be over . . . much to our regret. But there are still many social and religious ties which ever bind us to our Alma Mater. lVIy last hope or, rather, wish is that all the help and en- couragement which we have received from our pastor, Father Huemmer and his assistant, Father Letko, and also from the Sisters, will help us in our difficulties in later life. -LENORE FETTIG '40 'k Page Twenty-four T H E J o s is P H 1 U M NK R x X W xw ,,,,,Y , Y , J Q r EHRRLY5 SNES b'u4w,J,z1,aL,,,.7,,,Mnm.ugR1Tf UBRWN MARY N I N 3 l W Q7 ,gJ.zf CIA' ,gk . This all began when John was A H a boy. One day, while walking along the street, he extend- ed a hearty greeting to a priest who, because he was deeply oc- cupied with his own thoughts, failed to notice the boy. Hurt to the quick, John ran home to tell his mother. All that good Margaret Bosco could say to her son was of no avail to appease his wounded feelings, and he vowed then that he would devote his Whole life to working for boys. History tells how completely he kept his promise. Some years later, after John had been ordained to the priesthood he gathered together a few of the poor, illiterate boys in the town in which he had been stationed and began to school them in catechism, the three R's and other use- ful arts. His first class contained only six boys, but at each meeting it grew larger until it contained some hundred members. He called this session his Festive Oratoryf' At first the head of a girls' school permitted him the use of three rooms for the purpose of instructing his boys, but as the numbers increased he was forced to find another place. For a while the priest and the boys were driven from field to field. A hundred healthy boys aren't exactly quiet, so the neigh- bors would turn in complaints and off John Bosco would go to find another place. Rumors were spread that the good priest was slightly insane and once an attempt was made to confine him in an institution. But finally his good works were recognized. They won for him friends who were wealthy and with their assistance he secured a place where he could teach his boys. He continued this work throughout his life. His death ended his work here on earth, but his spirit will never dieg it lives today in the shop training program of the Salesion Brothers in 708 trade schools with an approximate enrollment of 14,000 pupils, in the 122 Salesion institutes through- out the world. -LEO TANZILLI '41 4 THE JOSEPHIUM Page Thzrtyfffve fv x 1 1 1 4 V ! First comes Nurse Edith Cavell CMar- i guerite Durmj and Rose of Washington Square QRosella Faulstichl discussing a deep, dark secret. They are not aware that they are under the eagle eye of Sherlock Holmes Une Metzl and His Girl Friday -- Nancy Drew, Detective CLenore Fettigl. Their secret is never to be known, for their attention is turned to a ruler-duel between Robin Hood Clfd Blubaughj and Bulldog Drummond Qjohn Kelichf which is raging furiously until Captains Courageousl' fSisters Agnes and Doloresj appear, to stop it. The boys hang their heads for a min- ute but soon raise them and scoff These Glamour Girls QAngela Blubaugh and Jean Elliottj as they engage in the gentle art of make-up. At that moment Dancing Co-edu fBetty Connorsj is living up to her title with capable boos supplied by Blondie CAnnabell Hodgej, an expert on the subject, and jeered at by Babes in Armsu CFreshmenD who really think she's good. She has to stop when class begins. Andy Hardy fLarry Magersl gives the old 'can't find my paper' stall but Hnally comes through with a perfect lesson even to his own amazement. Still stunned by Larry's masterpiece, WizardCsQ of Oz CEugene Parrj and CCharles Spiesj, if by chance they're called upon, hold their heads for the rest of the morning. What they don't say is made up for by Girl of the Golden West CMargaret Kieferj. At recess the assembly is full of card and ping-pong players, while the music filling the air is the strains of The Bird on Nell- ie's Hat as played by Our Leading Citizen QBill Sigwardl and Man About Town CBob Dauenhauerj. Class convenes and in skips Fifth Avenue Girl CMar- guerite O'Brienj fresh from a card victory and she looks mischie- vous. Something's up, for The Vivacious Lady fMary Laugh- linj has the same guilty look. She reaches down and lights a string. Not a second too early, for in gallops Thin Man Uoe Redenbaughj waving a paddle. He throws it on his desk and- BANG! a firecracker goes off. He jumps and falls to the floor, hit- ting his head. JIIASQUERADE AND DANCEO On October 30, 1939, the Junior C.Y.O. held their Hallowe'en Party and Dance. The hall was suitably decorated for the occasion. Following the grand march, the costumes were judged by several of the members' mothers. Prizes were awarded to Mar- garet Kiefer and Robert Dauenhauer, our secretary and president this year. Immediately after the unmasking the members held a treasure hunt around the school. The treasure, which was disclosed in the piano in the auditorium, was found by Wilma Willkie, Edward Blubaugh, Joan Everling, and Robert Williams. Later in the evening, dancing was enjoyed. Punch and cook- ies were served to all present. CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS On December 19, 1939, a Christmas program was presented for our regular C.Y.O. meeting by the Sophomores. The girls sang several Christmas carols before and after the play. Four of the Sophomore boys presented a play entitled, A Christ- mas Front. After the program our president, Robert Dauenhauer, pre- sented Father Letko, our director, with a Christmas present from the C.Y.O. Father Huemmer was given his gift from the C.Y.O. by Father Letko. After the presentation of the gifts, dancing was enjoyed by the members. -ROSELLA FAULSTICH '40 -Y- THE JOSEPHIUM PageFortyfi've H E JOSEPH! The referee then let them know That there were only a few minutes left Huddlel called one of the players, You'd better start to say your prayers, Because if we don't make a touch-down We will lose the golden crown.
