Gravem, Vice-Principal, History, Geography Accepting responsibility for your actions is the first real sigu of maturity. I try to pass on this message to all students that I come in contact with. However, I don’t want to see young people give up the enthusiasm and excitement that they project when discovering new worlds and ideas. I don’t know if students are envious of the enthusiasm, excitement, and idealism of their youth. Sr. Dorothy Marie, Principal, Latin Mr. Anthony Aiello, Principal, Economics, Civics Sr. Carol Kenning, Vice-Principal, Religion, English Help students to form the habit of viewing the world with a mind open to discovery and wonder; then, judging the world with a mind critical and informed... Mrs. Erbele, Business In business courses students develop skills in typing, accounting, shorthand, and office procedures for personal use and to qualify for entry level office jobs. Students are helped to develop a true personality for business. Mrs. B. Reeves, Music To contribute to both maturing and the retaining of the youthfulness of the students, the text of many of our songs are light and carefree. These songs keep up with today’s Mrs. C. Hanna, Home Economics youth as well as tomorrow's adults. Our music materials are selected so that they will _ In my class, there must be lots of sharing, critical lead to the development of concepts and generalizations which are understandings, judgements made and experiences which, hopefully, produce appreciations, and abilities. We do have two sides of music and each student is aware a happy blend of friendliness, honesty, and openness. The of both. activities allow for cooperative effort, conversation, and a sense of humor. English Department Sparks Creativity Sr. Catherine Theresa, English, Religion If maturing and youthfulness are qualities of mind as well as of body, I think that teaching students to know Christ in His love for them and all mankind is an essential contribution to their continual development in really joyful living Mr. Paul Tyler, English I encourage the students to remain faithful to that noble quality—curiosity—that dominates childhood. However, when students ask permission to light their teacher on fire for curiosity’s sake, I encourage no more. Miss Georgia Viahos PICTURE MISSING: Ms. Maria Moore, English, Speech How do I contribute to both the maturity and the retention of youth There’s no need for a personality to grow ar The thing is not to in my students? . . . by explaining courage and demonstrating humor! remain adolescent but to work toward maturity to appraise life If we can all remember that no human condition is ever permanent - honestly and with experience, not naively but critically and at the then we would not be too overjoyed in good fortune nor too sorrowful same time keep this openness, this willingness to face reality, this in misfortune. They haven’t yet learned to worry about what other people think of them. They’re just themselves, without any pretenses. I hope I can help my students understand that a rediscovery of this kind of simplicity is part of maturing. Father Lupe Sanchez, Religion, Spanish God is life, goodness, and beauty. The more Godlike we become, the more life, goodness, and beauty will we radiate. Sr. Elizabeth Mary, Religion, Language Arts Adults should always be a bit of the child: they should not lose their sense of wonder and also should retain their creativity. Mr. Jack Gordon, Religion Commit yourself to Jesus Christ! Through the power of His Spirit you will start becoming what God intends you to be. That’s maturity and authenticity. With Jesus in your life, you will remain ever growing, open, joyful, unafraid, never cynical. That’s authentic youthfulness. Father John O'Reilly, Religion Without Religion We Are Cowards Sr. Johanne, Guidance Counsellor Sr. Phyllis Cook, Religion, Math Children often stop to wonder and usually bring joy simply by being themselves. I try to encourage students to deepen the habit of pausing to wonder at God’s goodness and to find new ways of bringing joy to others. Mrs. Theresa Hom, Social Sciences The eagle was once nothing but an egg, but what would we know about the nature, the meaning, the possibilities of that egg had we never seen the eagle soaring in splendor against the sky? a Miss Rose Sartori, Italian, Spanish By promoting a classroom atmosphere wherein students, through guidance, experience freedom to develop a positive, serious outlook on the future. At the same time, furthering educational goals and interests through the channels of creativity-a factor common to all ages. Ms. Mary Kay Wesolek, Art, U.S. History Sometimes, and unfortunately, to “grow up” in our society means to stop growing: to conform to the definition of ‘adult’ and change no more. We should struggle instead to maintain the flexibility and open-mindedness of our childhood which are the essence of real “growth”. Mr. Barry Weiss, History, P.E. To be open and honest like a child is a great attribute for anyone. I try to promote this youthfulness by being open, honest and friendly with all the students I encounter. After all, if a teacher can be a child; why can’t they? The Wide World Is All Before Us Miss Concha Castellanos, Spanish, Physiology Teach-with the intention of beauty; Think-that God has placed you ina position to mold tomorrow's world Mrs. Mary Aiello, French Gabriela Mistral Mr. Robert Sickenger, Guidance Director The key ingredient in the development of maturity is the element of humor which places the world in perspective and allows us to enjoy the light-hearted along with the serious. All teaching should lead to this Mr. James Cur an, Math, Physics As children we relish the advancement and responsibility of adults and as adults we relish the freedom and innocence of children. The group of people who are in my midst are those who are on the brink of adulthood and I do not try to spire their own realizations. Mr. William Opsahl, Biology Two factors affect the growth of the brain: the environment and inheritance. I try to manipulate the environment so as to permeate maturity, but do nothing for youthfulness since it seems to be implanted through inheritance. Mrs. Lucie Putter, Biology, Chemistry Always remember: know yourself. God helps those who help themselves. aime 5 Miss Mary Ellen Brady, Math ... 1] should ask that a gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life, as an unfailing antidote against the boredom and disenchantments of later years... —Rachel Carson Bisecting and Dissecting Mr. Thomas Tyler, Math Like so much bottled bubbly waiting to be uncorked, students are ENERGY! I try to tap each student’s unique effervescence, to give vent to their curiosity and enthusiasm. It can be exhilarating for both of us. Mr. Michael Phelps, Math It is very difficult to do both most of the time, but I always try to influence young people to care for those around them and to treat them as they would wish to be treated. In my dealings with the students I try to stay in a position whereby I can influence them but not lose my own sense of humor or vitality. Mrs. Gail Rodrigues, Math and P.E Mrs. Otto Flocchini, Secretary Sr. Ann Loretto, Treasurer Mrs. Florence Cordray, Parish Receptionist What Would We Do Without Them? Mrs. M. Taylor, Secretary By insisting the students cooperate and abide by alf the rules of the school, we help in their maturing process. In our understanding of their little problems we help in retaining their youthfulness as well as Mr. Gene Cordray, Maintenance Man our own SS a ae at F $y 3 Ne Sr. Roselle, Librarian My work and services as a librarian, I think, contribute in a significant way toward helping students mature. I consider myself friendly and sincere. I think these characteristics should have an influence on the students. Mrs. M. Student Energy Reaches Its Peak student (stu’dent) n. Never-ceasing mass of energy. Always on the go. Believe it or not, that is the perfect description of the St. Joseph’s and Notre Dame students. Dancing their hearts out at dances, eating their hearts out at Hot Lunches, the students showed their usual lively vivaciousness in many extracurricular activities. The World As a Classroom Leaving behind the boundaries of the classroom walls, students and teachers took full advantage of the opportunities offered during Mini Week. Whether discovering the world of marine biology, experiencing yoga, or exploring San Francisco and the Bay Area, all were invited to learn something new and different. The courses lasted for five days and provided everyone with a much needed break from the regular school routine. Staff of the Year Hard at work throughout the year, the 1976-77 yearbook staff strove to make your yearbook great. Early in the morning, late at night, and at just about every time in between the staff plotted, schemed, and toiled over each and every page. Drawing layouts, taking pictures, writing copies, selling ads—these were just a few of the staff’s many duties. You many wonder—Is this any way to run a yearbook staff? We certainly hope so. 1st: A. de la Pena, M. Carr, J. Stelzner, A. Bachtold, P. O'Hara 2nd: G. Mediati, J. Espanto, S. Orille, J. Johnson 3rd: A. Garcia, C. Splan, M. McGowan 4th T. Porcuna, J. ALAMEDA 523-2020 PROFESSIONAL SERVICE SINCE 1874 Gracias Merci If there is a single characteristic shared by all children, it is the capacity to wonder - to delight in the simple, ordinary things that are all around. Too often this ability to perceive reality with wonderment and joy is lost in the process of growing up. The world connives to take away the wonder, innocence, and laughter of childhood and leave only the boredom, pain, and tears of the real world. The Staff of the 1976-1977 Reflections has worked very hard to bring you the ordinary, yet extraordinary, days of the school year. We would like to thank the many smiling faces that have become a part of this book and we sincerely hope that each of you will retain some part of your child’s heart. Then, our work will have had a purpose. An extra special thanks to Sister Phyllis Mr. Don Freeman, Bordanaro and Zarcone Photographers, and Assistant Editors Monica McGowan and Claire Splan.
