Although small squads, the tennis and golf teams, coached by Bill Vosburg and Fran Smith respectively, showed a desire to win far beyond their size. A new feature this year was Notre Dame golfer, Janice Carroll. Whether on the courts or on the green, St. Joseph’s came up with a winning team. St. Joseph’s Pilots entered the CAL playoffs on February 23 with a record of 12 - 2. With fifteen seconds left in their first game against Bishop O’ Dowd, Cecil Brown sunk the winning basket. The final score was Pilots 40 and Dragons 39. With the momentum going, the Pilots entered their last playoff game against Moreau. The Mariners used their entire squad and led well into the last half. Then with two seconds remaining, Anthony Taylor dunked the game-winning basket and it was all over for the Mariners. St. Joes then advanced into the North Coast Tournament where they defeated Washington, College Park, and Berkeley High to capture first place.
