The hospital will occupy a full city block and be expanded to a capacity of 460 beds as opposed to the present 300. lt will reach a height of nine stories as compared to the present seven. Many other improvements have been made. Among them ure the addition of a psychiatric ward, enlargement of the physical therapy department, and an increase in the capacity of the surgical depart- ment with seven major rooms and three minor as opposed to the previous four major and three minor, making St. joseph's Hospital more modern with better facilities to serve the needs of the public. 6 Tir ,Qu 1.2 fir' N.. S 15. josellylfs H ospizfal 1963 Through the influence of the Right Reverend john Henry Luers, St. joseph's Hospital first opened its doors in 1869 as the city's first hospital. He had purchased an old hotel known as Rockhill House and had brought from Germany the Poor Handmaids of jesus Christ, a Community devoted to the care of the sick and the poor, and the education of youth,to operate the new hospital. Because of many progressive building programs the hospital has grown to occupy a city block. St. joseph's is a three-hundred bed general hospital. lt has facilities for clinical experience in surgical, medical, pediatric, and obstetric care. 7 Xxx, ' 2 3 i 2 S Asa ff ,ff js f f W N 1? Dr. Halleck, a professor from the University of Minnesota taught Microbiology via closed circuit television lectures. A lecture outline and notebook were given to each student in order that she could correlate the lectures and textbook material. Follow up classes were held twice a week with Mrs. Binz, instructor of Basic Sciences. Tests were given periodically as in any microbiology class. We are the first nursing school in Indiana to try this method of teaching. If it proves to be successful, anatomy and chemistry laboratories will'be taught in the same manner next year. During our senior year at St. joe we are sent on affliation to Dr. Norman Beatty Memorial Hospital, Westville, Ind. , for thirteen weeks of intensive study in psychiatric nursing. It is here in this dynamic field that we as nurses come to recognize even more thoroughly than ever before that a patient is a person, not a disease carrier or room number. We acquire a basic know- ledge of personality patterns, and through this, we come to understand that a patient has a personal but most striking reaction to the fact that he is ill or disabled. We learn methods in which to deal with these specific personal emotional reactions in a mature, professional manner. Our primary step in the course is to express our own self concept for one must l-mow and understand The spirit of Christmas is remembered at Beatty as several of our students decorate a pine tree. All students enrolled in this school are automatically members of the association. Monthly meetings are held to give the students the opportunity to express their opinions and to advise the officers on student affairs and social activities. It is through this organization that money-making projects, dances, and student disciplinary action fwith faculty advicej are planned. It helps to pro- vide recreation, a sense of social responsibility, and a chance to use imagination. Socializing is appropriate in many areas. At Norman Beatty Hospital, the students sponsored mixers and invited students attending near-by colleges, participated in ping pong games, watched television, planned picnics and trips to Lake Michigan, and used many cooking talents to prepare delicious meals in the students' kitchen. L .J Auf:-.si.mm ' From the beginning to the end of our educational program we often heard of Florence Nightingale, the famous woman who gave the world the conception it has today of a nurse. She helped set the standards of nursing which we uphold today. We heard of her as little girls and idealized her. We set our goals to match those of hers which history has made immortal. As freshmen we envied the women in white with their roses and verbalization of her famous pledge. As juniors we dreamt of the day when we would learn those famous words. As seniors we began the long three hundred and sixty-five day wait till our turn would come. Finally on August 8, 1965, we repeated the following words of dedication: THE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE PLEDGE I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will ab- stain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to main- tain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my profession. With loyalty will I en- deavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care. 85 8 Y Arthur F. Aiken, M.D. justin E. Arata, M.D. Jerald L.
