The Most Rev. Leo A. Pursley, D.D. Bishop of Fort Wayne--South Bend SAINT JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL FT. WAYNE St. Joseph's Hospital opened its doors in 1869 as the city's first hospital. Instrumental in bringing this about was the Right Reverend John Henry Luers, Bishop of the Diocese, who purchased a hotel known as Rockhill House. It was his influence, too, which brought from Germany the Sisters to operate it, the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ; a Community devoted to the care of the sick and poor, and the education of youth, The hospital's evolution is marked by a progressive building program which got underway as early as 1878. Every few years... 1881, 1884, 1890, 1899, 1912, 1928, and 1962. . . additions went up, each one Biogel and more elaberure! sagt cedey the physical plant occupies a full city block. St. Joseph's is a 300-bed general hospital. It has facilities for clinical experience in surgical, medical, pediatric and obstetric nursing care. i { A building... Aroom... What makes them home? The many happy hours we spend studying, attending classes, and student meetings, enjoying recreational activities, and just plain having fun with fellow stu- dents makes this building and this room our home, It is here we live, learn, and mature while we are studying nursing. PRAYER FOR A NURSE Oh, my God: I am about to begin the day's work. Teach me to receive the sick in Thy name. Give to my efforts success, sweet Jesus, for the glory of Thy Holy Name. It is Thy work: Without Thee I cannot succeed. Grant that the sick Thou hast placed in my care may be abundantly blessed, Rev. Widman, C.PP.S., Hospital Chaplain and not one of them be lost because ; i of anything that is lacking in me. Help Thou me to overcome every temporal weakness and strengthen in me whatever may enable me to bring the sunshine of joy to the lives that are gathered round me day by day. Make me beautiful within for the sake of Thy sick ones and those lives which will be influenced by them. Amen. FACULTY SR. M. ODILLIA, P.H.J.C., R.N., B.S. Hospital Administrator. SR. Today your eagerness and excitement are even greater, as you stand at the threshold of a new way of life and look forward to assuming the responsibilities of a graduate nurse. During the same year in which you began to learn about nursing, a new St. Joseph's hospital also had its beginning. And, even as brick was laid upon brick to build this new structure , you were building too--building your future. First, the foundation of knowledge; then, opportunities galore to reinforce this knowledge in patient care; finally, the friendships which you formed and will not want to forget. The loyalty to your Alma Mater deepened too, as the three years moved swiftly to completion. Today we are planning the final steps for moving into our new hospital. It is marvelously equipped to give the best of service to those who come to us in need of health care. The shiny new equipment, however, means little unless we who use it are motivated by love for the sick, remembering that whatever you have done to the least of these, you have done to Me. Your contribution to patient care, because of your status today--and I know you are mighty proud of it--will be giving your BEST in service to the sick. The faculty and personnel of St. Joseph's Hospital and School of Nursing have worked, at times with great effort, to help you achieve your goal. Do remember them with gratitude and an occasional prayer in appreciation of their en- deavors. As graduate nurses, you will want to take time to increase your knowledge to keep in step with advances in science and health. Take time, too, to enjoy and store away some of the worthwhile things in life--happiness, joy, beauty, peace, friendship and virtue--so that you may bring them forth from your storehouse and share them with others as you go along life's way. Congratulations, and may God be with you always! May you have a happy future in your professional career! Sincerely, het M. arkor LsRN. Sister M. Theodorita, R.N., M.S. Throughout the year the Parent-Nurses' Association, sponsors money-making projects to finance needed equipment. This year, for instance, several card tables and three clothes dryers were purchased. The annual Christmas party, given by the Parent- Nurses! Association, is an event we all eagerly await. This organization and its activities are greatly appreciated by all of the student nurses. First and foremost, the club endeavors to promote a religious atmosphere by arranging Communion breakfasts, Days of Recollection, and a Pre-Cana Series. It sponsors many social get-togethers with the primary intention of acquainting new friends and uniting them and their ideas for a more wholesome, beneficial, intriguing action of the club and its purposes. Throughout the year we had such activities as hayrides, dances, pizza parties, skating parties, and lake outings. Ap- pealing more to the educational side are the stimulating lectures on the current topics of Civil Rights and Communism. Guest speakers are authorities in their fields. B At times it was hard; but I always felt Your kindness was ever near. A poet has said, 'there is nothing As rich as a friendship that's true’ Yours was a treasure I cherished Yours a value I knew. And thus, as my heart is so happy And I finish this short bit of verse, I am grateful and thank you for all you have done j That's my thought as a Graduate Nurse. -- Anonymous Wy tas | oe, ae sanyo Petar Lie S,
