Instrumental in bringing this about was the Right Reverend John Henry Leurs, Bishop of the Diocese, who purchased a hotel known as Rockhill House. It was his influence, too, which brought from Germany the Sisters to operate it, the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, a Community devoted to the care of the sick and poor, and the education of youth. The hospital's evolution is marked by a progressive building program which got underway as early as 1S Soeivety tew yeatsen .. 20 183151884, 51890, 1899, 1912, 1928, and 1962 . . . additions went up, each one bigger and more elaborate, until today the physical plant occupies a full city block. St. Joseph's is a 300-bed general hospital. It has facilities for clinical experience in surgical, medical, pediatric and obstetric nursing care. ° . e . 6 ° oo ° ° . ° e @ eee e e ° ° ° We the students of St. Joseph's . Birkhold, D. Wetoskey, C. Smith, R. Wiegand and L. Brennan. 38 I.A.N.S. We were very proud to have J. Selis elected president of the northeast Indiana district of the Indiana Association of Nursing Stu- dents. J. Hill and L. Larsen were also officers. Members become acquainted with students from other schools in the city, state, and nation at meetings, while working on projects, or at conven- tions. The national convention shown at right with the many different styles of uniforms is the high point of the year's activities. 39 Annually, there is a Student Nurse Contest in which the schools of nursing of Fort Wayne participate. Each school first has its own con- test, and the participants write and present their speeches on nursing. The winner from each school then presents her speech in com- petition again. We are very proud of the fact that a St. Joseph's representative has won for the last three years. A. McLaughlin, our winner this year, is pictured between J. Cavendar and J. Hill.
