The pressures are met head-on; youth endures almost anything. The school remains the arena for the ambitious. The supreme test is whether the students have learned to think for themselves — to question, to analyze, and to arrive at independent judgments. Everyone owns a unique idea about St. Joseph’s. These photographs show much more than an ordinary high school. Despite its size, there is no shutting newcomers out.

The high school years are not a time for acquiring a veneer that will pass with people as education but rather a time for acquiring the mental disciplines that will lead to a lifetime of independent self-education. The school must produce men on which any good society must depend. St. Joseph’s is more than this; it is a cacophony of sound, a whirlpool of colors. In the turmoil of congestions, the student must learn to survive on his own. Yet the friendships, the enthusiasm, and the many memorable events encourage him to make things happen. Quick with life, the students speak the hopes and realities of the times.
