The G ophysicel Year THE lNTERNATioNAL Geopuvsicfm YEAR, T957-1958, signifies man's collective study ot creation and the torces which govern it. As sixty-tour united nations embark on this intensive observation ot our universe trom tvventy-tive hundred stations around the globe, they vvill closely observe, measure, and record the natural phenomena that shape the vvorld. The many and ditlterent studies ot interest that vvill grope with man's imagination and interest vvill include the mysterious cosmic rays, geomagnetism, glaciology, the aurora and airglovv, ionospheric physics, geodesy, oceanography, seismology, and gravimetry. All this will aid scientists in their magnanimous challenge and quest tor KNOWLEDGE and TRUTH. The United States put into orbit, as its hrst contribution to the lnter- national Geophysical Year, a 30,8 pound cylinder-shaped satellite at TO:55 P. M. CE.S.T.j, Friday, January 3l, l958, The American satellite, called the Explorer, is traveling in an egg-shaped orbit at an altitude ot from ZOO to l,7OO miles, East to West, completing its cycle ot the earth every one and one-halt hours at the speed ot l8,000 miles per hour. The Army Jupiter C rocket boosted the satellite into space trom Cape Canaveral, Florida, and the satellite is expected to remain in space tor TO years. THE SKY literally glistens with stars that beclron us into the unlrnown. Our minds become occupied with our own tuture as well as the tuture discover- ies and excitement of man's conquest ot space.
