In u HQ' N j if W Deus Rex Glens Confronted with the task of providing education on Catholic principles in all phases of knowledge, Archbishop Hoban encountered a problem similar to the one faced by the first bishop, Saint Peter. As Saint Peter is called the Rock of the Church, Archbishop Hoban may also be likened to a rock, for he is the keystone in all of Cleveland's educational institutions. Many Catholic high schools owe their existence to his outstanding venture in this field. The students of Saint Joseph High School appreciate the personal interest of their Archbishop, which has facilitated the growth and expansion of the school. They shall always remember his provision of paramount educational facilities for their use. He, more than anyone else, is responsible for the opportunities provided by the excellent education the students receive. The success of His Excellency, celebrating thirty-five years as a bishop, has the gratitude of everyone. Our 167 harp Emfi ian .

I 5 Wlzzrizznisfs cv 6 in l1c4v . . . The Rt. Reverend Monsignor Clarence E. Elwell, Ph.D. As Diocesan Superintendent of Schools since 1946, Monsignor Elwell has immensely furthered Catholic education in the diocese. Active in civic and ecclesiastical affairs, he has attained distinction in scholastic management. Invited by Bishop Amadeus Rappe, two Marianists came to Cleveland in August, 1856. They first settled at Saint Patrick School. Soon the Society spread, staffing schools at Saint John Cathedral parish, Saint Mary parish, and else- where. They continued to staff schools according to the wishes of the Founder of the Society of Mary, Father William Joseph Chaminade: Have them feel especially that Mary is to be glorified from one century to another, but more especially in these latter days, by the visible and almost tangible protection which she extends. This year the Marianists commemorated the centennial of their arrival in Cleveland. In Saint John Cathedral, Archbishop I-loban ofiiciated at a Solemn Pontifical Mass, attended by the stu- dents, faculty, and friends. The decision of Archbishop Hoban in staffing Saint Josephis with Marianists was made after considering the outstanding work done by the Society of Mary at Cathedral Latin and other schools. His Excellency desired that the students be educated with Marianist principles. His wis- dom in this selection has been proven by the quality of student that Saint Joseph High School produces.
