In u HQ' N j if W Deus Rex Glens Confronted with the task of providing education on Catholic principles in all phases of knowledge, Archbishop Hoban encountered a problem similar to the one faced by the first bishop, Saint Peter. As Saint Peter is called the Rock of the Church, Archbishop Hoban may also be likened to a rock, for he is the keystone in all of Cleveland's educational institutions. Many Catholic high schools owe their existence to his outstanding venture in this field. The students of Saint Joseph High School appreciate the personal interest of their Archbishop, which has facilitated the growth and expansion of the school. They shall always remember his provision of paramount educational facilities for their use. He, more than anyone else, is responsible for the opportunities provided by the excellent education the students receive. The success of His Excellency, celebrating thirty-five years as a bishop, has the gratitude of everyone. ' ' 61 ' v l The Most Reverend John Krol, S.T.D., J.C.D. Cleveland's Junior Auxiliary Bishop, a native Clevelander, received his early education under the Marianists. The diocese, with two auxiliary bishops for the first time in its history, needs his industry. ill ' WMM V 4- xnxx :i :i R ..gi'.f1 The Most Reverend Floyd L. Begin, S.T.D., Ph.D., J.C.D Bishop Floyd L. Begin, Cleveland's Senior Auxiliary Bishop, is the product of a Marianist education. Devoting much time to the Con- lirmzition of diocesan youth, His Excellency is familiar to all. I 5 Wlzzrizznisfs cv 6 in l1c4v . . . The Rt. Reverend Monsignor Clarence E. Elwell, Ph.D. As Diocesan Superintendent of Schools since 1946, Monsignor Elwell has immensely furthered Catholic education in the diocese. Active in civic and ecclesiastical affairs, he has attained distinction in scholastic management. Invited by Bishop Amadeus Rappe, two Marianists came to Cleveland in August, 1856. They first settled at Saint Patrick School. Soon the Society spread, staffing schools at Saint John Cathedral parish, Saint Mary parish, and else- where. They continued to staff schools according to the wishes of the Founder of the Society of Mary, Father William Joseph Chaminade: Have them feel especially that Mary is to be glorified from one century to another, but more especially in these latter days, by the visible and almost tangible protection which she extends. This year the Marianists commemorated the centennial of their arrival in Cleveland. In Saint John Cathedral, Archbishop I-loban ofiiciated at a Solemn Pontifical Mass, attended by the stu- dents, faculty, and friends. The decision of Archbishop Hoban in staffing Saint Josephis with Marianists was made after considering the outstanding work done by the Society of Mary at Cathedral Latin and other schools. His Excellency desired that the students be educated with Marianist principles. His wis- dom in this selection has been proven by the quality of student that Saint Joseph High School produces. Not the Philharmonic, but just the Brothers' Band here displaying their musical talents. While engaged in the many occupations of the ordinary day, the Marianist, inspired by a filial devotedness to Mary, strives to develop in himself and those whom he contacts the fullness of Christian life. Thus he plans to save and sanctify himself in saving others and forming an imposing mass of Christian leaders. For him, education consists in teach- ing truth and forming Christ in souls, in making Him known, loved, and served. A certain part of each Marianist day is set aside for spiritual exercises: meditations, Communions, and prayers for the closer realization of the designs of Mary. ' Stn mf ue- K ' giswv ll vii! Although new to St. Joseph's this year, Father Bedel immediately gained the students, conidence. To him is attributed the excellent school spirit and the efficiency of the ad- ministration. o VICE-PRINCIPAL Bro. John H. Strickroth, S.lVl. Brother John has been Assistant Principal for the past two years. Due to his sympathetic insight in the problems of youth, he is very popular with the student body. The faculty of Saint Joseph High School is composed of men dedicated in mind and spirit to the furthering of Christian education. In this sense they are apostles, for it was the duty of the first Christian teachers to'go forth and teach all nations. As teachers they have sacrificed much of the leisure and material reward that is a part of other occupations. But as the Apostles, their reward comes in the satisfaction of knowing that they are instruments of the Great Teacher. Although the subjects that they teach range from religion to physics, the teachers are similar in that they have all devoted their careers to the education of Christian youth. me EHili.,?lQ sq' BRO. Che Selma 17 fader . . In their hands lies the future .... Now that the many English compositions are nearly all completed, and the geometry homeworks are part of the past, the Seniors of Saint Joseph High School are prepared to plunge into new depths. They have excelled in setting the example for the underclassmen, which is always the duty of the Senior class. When the present Seniors were freshmen, they observed the commencement of the first gradu- ating class. Now they, too, become a part of the history of the school, leaving behind many accomplishments and commencing their new careers. BELANICH, WILLIAM M. In addition to the diligent practice of its members, the Band's per- fection is attributed to the direction of Mr. Anthony Pace, who is assisted by Brother Philip Aaron. Numbering Seventy-tW0 members, the Band began by marching at six football games. At the end of the football season, preparation began for the imminent concert season. a Striving for more instrumentation, the acquisition of many new instru- ments was secured with the proceeds of last year's concert. Among these were concert snare drums, an alto horn, and a new alto and bass clarinet. With the enlarging of the band, new uniforms were purchased for new members. Boyle. Drawing praise from everyone, the 1957 Viking basketball team played a record-breaking season. The year began with the Wickliffe game, in which Mike Doria tied the school's individual scoring record of Z4 points. Following this, the team went on to defeat high-ranking Glenville, 65-37. The next four games were with Collinwood, Fairport, Chaminade, and Hamilton. Forward Ken Boyle was high scorer in each of these, amassing a total of 71 points. In the Alumni game, the Old Grads presented no problem to their classy successors. The big Euclid game drew an unprecedented crowd here, which saw the Vikings again victorious, 76-55, with a fine display of their set-shooting prowess. Mike Doria snatches the ball from a St. Edward's player as Pat Dodson and Ken Boyle close in. Mike Doria drops in two more on a rebound, while Dave Parent watches. In this, the University game, school records were set in game scoring, and indi- vidual scoring by Rich Holzheimer. Guard Carl Bauer drives past a University player Saint Edwardis turned out more like a breeze than the expected squeeze, as the 92-58 score indi- cates. The score set a new team record for the school. The record, however, lasted for less than a week, for in the following game with University School it was broken, 92-'51, Rich I-lolzheimer led the team with 34 points, setting still another record in individual scoring. Winning their way into the district finals of the State Tournament, the Vikings defeated Wickliffe and Mentor to become Euclid Tournament cham- pions. They proceeded to rout Euclid and second- seeded Painsville I-larvey, climaxing the foremost season in St. Josephls basketball history. Carl Bauer gets a half-nelson on a Heights player as Dave Parent recovers the ball. A St. Stan man interferes, but not enough to keep Carl Bauer from another two-pointer. Heights players look in amazement as center Mike Doria soars into the air for another one. , 1. 5. : v '1' X 'Q u ' v v 4 fvl , 15 4 K sas 1. 'W C ,Yum Var ity FIRST ROW: Mr. J. McDonough fCoachl, T. During this time, we have seen the conception and completion of Saint Joseph High School as an exemplification of the vision of Father Chaminade that education everywhere may instill the wisdom of Christianity in the youth of the world.
