Dedication St. Joseph High School, now co-educational, continues to offer a program which centers on academic excellence and Christian ideals. We, the annual staff, dedicate this 1976 EXCELSIORto St. J oseph's in its continued quest for excellence and to all who have supported this institution giving young people the opportunity for a Christian education. On May 23, 1976, the fust female students in St. Joseph history graduated from the school - the first of many to come. In past years, the girls had always graduated from Nazareth Academy and the boys from St. Joseph. The decision to consolidate was confirmed by Thomas Marion O'Cormor, board chairman, on Thursday, January 15, 1975, at a meeting of St. Joseph Schools, Inc. The board acted on a request by Mother Perpetua, superioress of the Incamate Word and Blessed Sacrament Order, who said her order would no longer be able to support a high school program at Nazareth Academy and asked the St. Joseph directors to accept a plan of consolidation. A group of alumni and supporters of private education launched the effort to support St. Joseph financially, through the St. Joseph Endowment Fund. The fund drive's goal is S750,000 to be put into a bank account in order to draw enough interest to cover the high school's operating deficit. At printing time, the drive had netted over S600,000. Spearheading the overall campaign effort are District Judge Joe E. Kelly, Dave Lack, and Mrs. Sandra Williams, together with project coordinators: Bill Beck, Mrs. Corinne Freeland, Ed Hiller, and G. C. Pittman. In the wake of this new endeavor, the Fathers' and Mothers' Clubs financed new construction on campus and supported the girls' drill team and sports contingent. New shower rooms, dressing room facilities, and uniforms were supplied for the girls, while the boys were allowed a new set of weight machines and new football uniforms.
