JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL VICTORIA, TEXAS Volume XXIX rf- Z' St. Not just a school Faculty 6 Honors 28 s 31 f Joe but a family Organizations 41 Clubs 73 Sports Underclassmen Actjvities 76 Dedication St. Joseph High School, now co-educational, continues to offer a program which centers on academic excellence and Christian ideals. We, the annual staff, dedicate this 1976 EXCELSIORto St. J oseph's in its continued quest for excellence and to all who have supported this institution giving young people the opportunity for a Christian education. On May 23, 1976, the fust female students in St. Joseph history graduated from the school - the first of many to come. In past years, the girls had always graduated from Nazareth Academy and the boys from St. Joseph. The decision to consolidate was confirmed by Thomas Marion O'Cormor, board chairman, on Thursday, January 15, 1975, at a meeting of St. Joseph Schools, Inc. The board acted on a request by Mother Perpetua, superioress of the Incamate Word and Blessed Sacrament Order, who said her order would no longer be able to support a high school program at Nazareth Academy and asked the St. Joseph directors to accept a plan of consolidation. A group of alumni and supporters of private education launched the effort to support St. Joseph financially, through the St. Joseph Endowment Fund. The fund drive's goal is S750,000 to be put into a bank account in order to draw enough interest to cover the high school's operating deficit. At printing time, the drive had netted over S600,000. Spearheading the overall campaign effort are District Judge Joe E. Kelly, Dave Lack, and Mrs. Sandra Williams, together with project coordinators: Bill Beck, Mrs. Corinne Freeland, Ed Hiller, and G. C. Pittman. In the wake of this new endeavor, the Fathers' and Mothers' Clubs financed new construction on campus and supported the girls' drill team and sports contingent. New shower rooms, dressing room facilities, and uniforms were supplied for the girls, while the boys were allowed a new set of weight machines and new football uniforms. Somebody must have said something funny. Starlighters The St. Joseph High School Drill Team, in their first year, has accomplished much to be admired and copied. Under the watchful eye of their sponsor, Sister Mary Ellen, the 28 girls carried the burden of establishing themselves in a world of Victoriadores and Raider Belles with a surprising amount of poise and heart. Performing at the many halftimes of the foot- ball and basketball games was onef of the services handled beautifully by the Starlightqrs. By competition, the Starlighters won more awards than any drill team in the city. Competing at Rice University on October 8, the girls perfomied at halftime along with the band at the Rice-Missi- ssippi football game. In January, the girls traveled to Commerce and the ETSU Competition. There they received a division l ranking in both jazz and prop routines, while receiving a II in the high kick routine. The last time the girls competed together as a unit was in Pasedena. In that competition the Star- lighters earned a I in jazz and prop, while capturing all ranking in the high kick. The Starlighters and the band also received f'1rst place in the marching division at the Stockshow Parade. The highlight of the year for the team was the Spring Show. In a performance not too soon for- gotten, the girls delivered entertainment at its Finest. 1976 was a year to be remembered for future Sta.rlighter drill teams. Through the patient leader- ship of Sister Mary Ellen, the 28 girls proved their desire to be the best. They have set a precedence for future drill teams not only from STJ but the entire city as well. Whoever took this picture isn't going to live very long. Coach Tibiletti, who has coached at St. Joseph for 12 years, led St. Joe to an unprecedented fifth conse- cutive district championship this year. 52 How significant is the number five? Compared to the number eighteen, it's not very significant. But when the Flyer '75 football team, it becomes very remarkable. Under the direction of Coach Steve Tib- iletti and Coach Terry Hannon, the Flyers captured the District 6AA title for the fifth time in as many years by shellacking Hallettsville Sacred Heart 22-6 on Friday, November 14, 1975. ln the non-district tilts, the Flyers pulled a derby nightmare by stumbling out of the gate. STJ drop- ped all of their non-loop games, but remained in the running until the final gun was fired in each of them. Falling to Ganado 8-0 at the reservation, the Flyers began the losing streak which left some skepticism from critics as to the potential of the district champions. After Ganado, STJ fell consecutively to Van Vleck fminus George Woodard, they weren't so tough this year, 19-141, and Louise C20-61. The Marines landed on the shores of Patti Welder expecting another Iwo Jima. What they found in- stead was the unofficial welcoming committee from STJ fcommonly called Flyersj who was determined to ring their leather-necks. After almost forty-eight minutes of scoreless football, the Marine coach had to separate the men from the boys and come up with something for the blue bruisers. Two costly mistakes deprived the Flyers of victoryg they fell, 12-0. Now, the district race was a different story. In the opener, the one which, by the way, was supposed to tell the story for the Flyers, STJ told it by mugging Shiner St. Paul, 39-8. From there they proceeded to mutilate everybody from Shiner to Schulenburg, and everybody in between. After trouncing Sacred Heart 4l-0, they were slapped by Bishop Forest in the only blemish on the district record book, 0-0. From there they plucked St. Paul, 16-0, and scalped Sacred Heart, 22-6 fthe district clincherj. And, as if they had a reason, they put the Ali touch to Bishop Forest and won it dancing away, 28-0, on Homecoming Night. The Flyers were stopped short of a dream that has eluded them since 1965. In 1974 they came the closest, the dream ended at J. J. Kearns in Waco. In '75 the dream ended at Sams Stadium in Browns- ville. Shocked by an opening kickoff returned for a touchdown, the Flyers could not recover in timeg they fell to Brownsville St. Joseph, 19-0. Special recognition should be given to the All-District blue bruisers who made a strong effort to help realize that dream. Maybe, through their efforts, their successors will. Frosty Hanley -- Honorable Mention, Center, All District, Defensive End James Villafranca -- Honorable Mention, Defensive Back Among the great are the people who will try to find that dream in '76. Slamming St. Paul in the cage opener, 39-33, the girls found the going tough in their second game with the Cardinalettes, they fell, 47-35, their only district loss. The girls found Sacred Heart to be easy pickinggbopping the Indianet- tes in both games, 55-31 and 65-43. Bishop Forest proved to be no com- petition for the Flyers, as both games proved, 75-35 and 53-47. By virtue of the St. Paul loss, the girls were forced to humiliate the Cardinalettes one more time, this time at a different roost. Cuero may be where America talks turkey, but on this day they were talking dead Cardinalettes, STJ prevailed, 52-40. This put the Flyers in the home of the Spurs, the Hemisfair Arena in San Antonio, and the State Tournament. In a record game, one which saw two overtimes, the girls saw victory fade away, falling to Ennis St. John 35-32. They preserved their No. 3 ranking by routing Houston Marion, 65-36. If the Flyers had been able to avoid St. John in the first game, the possibility remains that they would have been ready for them in round two. Even if losing in round two, the girls would have been at least ranked No. 2 a ranking they certainly de- serve. STJ placed Roberta Zafereo, Melanie Enke, and Catherine Hiller on the All District list. Hiller and Enke also received All-Tournament honors for their play in the state games. Under the leadership of Coach Terry Hannon, STJ shared the top round- ball spot with Shiner St. Paul and Hallettsville Sacred Heart, who represented the district in the playoffs. Covering the district season, the Flyers lost a heart-stopper to St. Paul at the roost, 60- 52. But that couldn't be compared to the freight-train the Cardinals met a couple of weeks hter when they ventured to test the Flyers at our home airport, they were jet-lagged, 55-48. The Flyers looked to have dominated Sacred Heart in basketball as well as football in their encounter, STJ took it, 53-49. The second game was different, however, as the Indians won it Little Bighorn style, 55-35. The Flyers took both games of the Bishop Forest series, winning 66-57 and 85-73. In their first game, St. Joseph whipped St. John's of Ennis I7-3. and then came from behind to win the second game I2-ll against Beaumont Kelly. At one time in this match, the STJ girls trailed ll-2 bc- fore pulling in their victory. This put St. Joseph into the semifinals of the tournament at which time they came up against Port Arthur Bishop Byrne. The Victorians downed Bishop Byrne 9-8 in the first combat. Losing immediately after that 2-13 against the same opponents forced them into a two-out-of-three situation. The St. Joseph team won their third game 15-4 and thus captured the state AA title. The Flyers of Coach Steve Tibiletti bowed out of the district race with a 6-12 record while pacing 2-4 in district. Reviewing the highlights of the district season, the Flyers shouldered a tough defeat at the hands of Sacred Heart in the opener, 9-7 in tifteen innings. The only Flyer wins in the district sweepstakes were registered over St. Paul 13-01 and Bishop Forest C12-SJ. Flyer ace Mark Scherer saw more action on the mound than either Dan Bomersbach or Paul Woytkewicz, compiling a 6-6 overall and 2-3 district pitching record. Strong hitting for the season came from Scherer and Danny Dick, shortstop. The Flyers participated in the V.I.S.D. Tournament, as well as traveling to Cuero, Yorktown, and Port Lavaca. As you can see, this is a very unconventional book, in a world of conventional tradi- tions. But then again, 1976 was a very unconventional year, in this cavalcade of a sometimes conventional decade. This book was arranged to focus on St. Joseph High for one primary reasong to commemorate the first co-educational year of the school. We also attempted to put forth a sometimes scoffed- at idea, the idea that a person's personality is sometimes measured by his ability to laugh at himself. This book poked a lot of fun at a lot of people to help you, the student, remember 1976 as a year of achievement, fun, and pleasant memories.
