' Dedication We, the 1959 graduating classes of Nazareth Academy and St. Joseph, lovingly dedicate this issue of the Excelsior to you, Our Dearest Mother. It was through your guidance and loving care that we have completed these high school years and now stand on the threshold of the future. It was you who extended a helping hand as we took our first faltering steps , you who gave us the courage and the will to succeed, you who truly were as a Mother guiding her children through the difficult maze of life. As we leave our Alma Maters to take our place in the world, all our trust shall be placed in your loving care. Watch over us and guide us as we start on the long and perilous path of life.

MRS. JAMES F. WELDER, SR. The passing of Mrs. James F. Welder, Sr. to her eternal reward left a deep void in the educa- tional circles in the city of Victoria. During her lifetime, Mrs. Welder advanced the cause of edu- cation and by her many generous philanthrophies brought Catholic education to the present and future generations of the children of the Victoria area. This intense interest in Catholic schools was recognized beyond the local limits of the city. The highest ecclesiastical authority in the Arch- diocese of San Antonio, the Most Reverend Robert E. Lucey, S.T.D., noted the educational interests of Mrs. Welder. For this interest and for other aids to the Church in the Victoria community. Arch- bishop Lucey presented her name to the Holy Father, Pius XII, and he elected her Lady Commander of the Holy Sepulcher, a high Papal honor bestowed upon women for their interest in and pursuit of the affairs of the Church. The students and alumni of St. Joseph ' s School and Nazareth Academy are ever mindful and grateful to Mrs. Welder for her generous contributions towards the development and improvements of these schools. The Catholic schools of Victoria are a standing memorial to Mrs. Welder for her care and solicitude for the children of the city. A final tribute to the memory of Mrs. Welder could not be made without showing how close- ly she was a part of the St. Joseph School. Mrs. Welder was the first President of the St. Joseph ' s Mothers Club, and she held that office actively for 25 years. After her retirement as active President, she was given the title of Honorary President for life. Mrs. Welder ' s lovable personality was ever a guiding force and inspiration to the members of the St. Joseph ' s Mothers Club. Now that we hold dear the memory of Mrs. Welder in our minds and hearts, let us keep her in our prayers that she might rest in the bosom of God.
