A. and St. Joseph, have combined our efforts and ideas in an attempt to portray every phase of high school life. As you turn the pages of this annual years from now, may it help to bring into clearer focus all the incidents and events which made our Senior year so memorable. Years may pass, but in our nnem- ories we will still recall all the thrills , laughter, joys, and happiness of one of the most wonderful and unforgettable years of our lives--our Senior Year. V A ' Dedication We, the 1959 graduating classes of Nazareth Academy and St. Joseph, lovingly dedicate this issue of the Excelsior to you, Our Dearest Mother. It was through your guidance and loving care that we have completed these high school years and now stand on the threshold of the future. It was you who extended a helping hand as we took our first faltering steps , you who gave us the courage and the will to succeed, you who truly were as a Mother guiding her children through the difficult maze of life. As we leave our Alma Maters to take our place in the world, all our trust shall be placed in your loving care. Watch over us and guide us as we start on the long and perilous path of life. MRS. JAMES F. WELDER, SR. The passing of Mrs. James F. Welder, Sr. to her eternal reward left a deep void in the educa- tional circles in the city of Victoria. During her lifetime, Mrs. Welder advanced the cause of edu- cation and by her many generous philanthrophies brought Catholic education to the present and future generations of the children of the Victoria area. This intense interest in Catholic schools was recognized beyond the local limits of the city. The highest ecclesiastical authority in the Arch- diocese of San Antonio, the Most Reverend Robert E. Lucey, S.T.D., noted the educational interests of Mrs. Welder. For this interest and for other aids to the Church in the Victoria community. Arch- bishop Lucey presented her name to the Holy Father, Pius XII, and he elected her Lady Commander of the Holy Sepulcher, a high Papal honor bestowed upon women for their interest in and pursuit of the affairs of the Church. The students and alumni of St. Joseph ' s School and Nazareth Academy are ever mindful and grateful to Mrs. Welder for her generous contributions towards the development and improvements of these schools. The Catholic schools of Victoria are a standing memorial to Mrs. Welder for her care and solicitude for the children of the city. A final tribute to the memory of Mrs. Welder could not be made without showing how close- ly she was a part of the St. Joseph School. Mrs. Welder was the first President of the St. Joseph ' s Mothers Club, and she held that office actively for 25 years. After her retirement as active President, she was given the title of Honorary President for life. Mrs. Welder ' s lovable personality was ever a guiding force and inspiration to the members of the St. Joseph ' s Mothers Club. Now that we hold dear the memory of Mrs. Welder in our minds and hearts, let us keep her in our prayers that she might rest in the bosom of God. Pope phHjLXm In the midst of cheering crowds and great throngs of people, Angelo Cardinal Roncalli was announced as the new Holy Father of Christendom. It was 6:00 p.m., Roman time, October 28, 1958. Immediately following his election, the new Pope chose the name of Pope John XXIII. Upon hearing of the election of the new Pope, Archbishop Robert E. Lucey issued the fol- lowing statement for general publication. Great joy reigns today in the Universal Church. We have a new Father in the person of His Holiness Pope John XXIII. His shoulders must now bear the enormous burden so gloriously borne by his great predecessor in the Holy See. As his new Pontificate begins, we ask that our people pray unceasingly for his intentions. Let our people pledge him their undivided loyalty, and let them learn to love their new Father with the same fullness with which they loved Pope Pius XII. cfDlocesan S u HIS EXCELLENCY The Most Reverend ROBERT E. LUCEY, S.T.D. Archbishop of the Diocese of San Antonio erLor5 Most Rev. STEPHEN A. LEVEN Superintendent of Schools Rt. Reverend Msgr. F. O. BECK, V.F. Pastor of St. Mary ' s Church a t li er J ci u l A. J of-l-er On October 7, St. Joseph ' s High S c h o o 1 was visited by the Good Father Paul J. Hoffer. Father Hoffer entered St. Joseph Lane to the accompaniment of the School Band with the high school students flanking either side of the Lane. The students filed in behind Father Hoffer ' s car and followed to the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary where Father Hoffer delivered a short talk. Classes were resunned until activity period when Father Hoffer gave a talk on the privileges of American freedom and the scholastic rating of the school. The Good Father ' s talk centered around the idea of the Primary purpose of the School. This is the formation of personal thinking and the development of the whole man, which is in reality another Christ. Father Hoffer, Superior-General of twenty-seven hundred Marianist priests and Brothers who teach seventy thousand students throughout the world, has traveled five continents visiting the schools under his juris- diction. t Jur f- atlik f- tleit6 10 LEFT TO RIGHT; Fathers Henry Rolf, John Keane, Rt. Dear Seniors, With your commencement exercise at the end of this school year, your schooling will not be ending, but it will be just beginning. In this modem age of ours, a young man cannot stop his for- mal education at the high school level. He ould be doing himself an injustice if he did not con- tinue his schooling to become better acquainted with the Arts and Sciences needed in a highly com- petitive society. Seniors, thank your good parents for having made a Catholic high school education available to you. As you enter into the world outside of the secinity of the classroom and the home, you will be beset on all sides by trials, fatigues, and temptation. Hold fast to the Christian principles garnered in your Christian home and in your Catholic high school. During your years at St. Joseph ' s School you have been imbued with a true Marian devotion. Maintain this devotion as you go through life so that you may go to Jesus through Mary. When you lea ' e St. Joseph ' s School, take ' our place in the workaday world as true Catholic gentiemen effecting a good to your fellowmen for the honor and glory of God. ' l 2 H:Ea£iaA ,% P . SENIOR FAREWELL As thoughts of graduation and college fill our minds , so too do the happy memories we are leaving behind us forever. No more will we rush into school as the first bell rings in the morning; nor more will we hurry down the familiar halls toward our next class; never again will we relive all the happy hours spent with classmates and teacher. As our footsteps echo down the hall and disappear for the last time, we will have completed another chapter in our lives. There is a bright and promising future lying ahead of us, but there is a past lying behind us which shall never be forgotten. FAREWELL. 231 232 l  Ao5eph J lan
