Returning to America, Father celebrated his First Solemn High Mass August 20, 1933 in Sts. Peter and Paul Church, St. Louis, Missouri. During the twenty-five years of his priesthood. Father has been chaplain and teacher in the various schools of the Society of Mary. McBride High School, Chaminade College, and St. Mary ' s High School in the St. Louis area were home to Father for seven years. Another seven years were spent at Central Cathohc High School in San Antonio, and eleven years were devoted to the young men of St. Joseph ' s. It is our jubilee wish that the efforts you have put forth for the education of youth, the work of God and His Blessed Mother, may have fruition in bringing souls to the throne of God. The shades of night were falling fast, As through an Alpine village passed A youth, who bore, ' mid snow and ice, A banner with the strange device -- EXCELSIOR! O stay, the maiden said, and rest Thy weary head upon this breast! A tear stood in his bright blue eye. But still he answered with a sigh, EXCELSIOR! At break of day, as heavenward The pious monks of Saint Bernard Uttered the oft-repeated prayer, A voice cried through the startled air, EXCELSIOR! A traveler, by the faithful hound, Half buried in the snow was found. Still grasping in his hand of ice That banner with the strange device- - EXCELSIOR! Try not the pass, the old man said; Dark lowers the tempest overhead; The roaring torrent is deep and wide! And loud that clarion voice replied, EXCELSIOR! Beware the pine-tree ' s withered branch! Beware the awful avalanche! This was the peasant ' s last good night: A voice replied, far up the height, EXCELSIOR! There in the twilight cold and gray. Lifeless, but beautiful, he lay. JOE With deep regret the students of St. Joseph ' s School note the departure from their midst of the beloved principal, Bro. John Kurz, S.M. This year Bro. John completes the third year of his second term in office as principal of the school. The Catholic Church al- lows no more than two terms of three years each to superiors of religious communities. During his six year tenure at St. Joseph ' s Bro. John has exercised fully the type of leadership sought for in a, school administrator. His leadership, his zeal for a fine calibre of educatiort- al standards, and his firm but tolerant disciplinary policy has enabled the students of the school to ever strive for higher goals of Christian conduct and learning. Bro. John ' s care and solicitude for the students ' welfare extended from the smallest boy in the third grade to the graduating seniors. Their problems he made his problems and he handled each one on an individual basis for the good and betterment of the child involved. The educational policy pursued by Bro. John for the school was one based upon firm pedagogical and psychol- ogical principles. He is known among his fellow educators as a traditionalist and not as a fadist. He firmly set into action the educational maxim of the Society of Mary that The Brother teaches in order to educate , that is, the Christian educator executes all the means which enables him to sow, cul- tivate, strengthen, and render fruitful the Christian spirit in the souls of his students, in order to lead them to a sincere and open profession of true Christianity. During his term in office Bro. John has witnessed the school grow to its maximum capacity of 720 students in the year 1956-57. The band travel- ed to all the football games that were within a reasonable distance, and during a few of the close games the St. Joseph musicians practically blew the team across the goal line with their powerful and enthusiastic repetition of Victory March. The shows put on at half-time during the football games occupied the practice time as well as after school time of the band during the first two months of the school year. In November the band entertained at the Fathers ' Club meeting. They did likewise for the Mothers ' Club at their Christmas party. During the Christmas holidays the band marched in the annual Christmas parade. January passed rapidly as the band prepared for the Archdiocesan Music Festival held in San Antonio on February 23. The St. Joseph Band was acclaimed for its outstanding tone quality and precise attack. Then, except for an occasional assembly, the band was silent to the public until the Silver Sacredotal Jubilee of Father Otting inspired the band to work up a medley of school songs from the various establish- ments where Father had taught as a priest. After a couple of rather heavy selections by the band, the program was closed with the most enthusiastic singing of the school song ever done at St. Joseph ' s. Early in May the band programmed its biggest event of the whole year, the Spring Concert, Although the crowd was sparce, the music was well played beginning with the opening Queen City March on through the Russian Choral and Overture, the trombone and trumpet trios, all the way to the closing numbers by the dance band. The band has taken on one more activity for this school year — an outdoor concert to be played in the DeLeon Plaza Friday even- ing. May 16. This concert finished, the St. Joseph Band will not be heard until next fall ' s football team needs a little encourage- ment to make the first and ten. CASE OF THE CAFE SNATCHERS Time: 7:30 A.M. BROTHER JOHN (Continued from page 1) date the children seeking education at St. Joseph ' s. Pressure upon existing facihties was lessened only by severing the second grade from the school. During these six years the faculty increased from eleven to twenty- three members. This increase called for an enlargement of the faculty building which was completed in 1954. Besides these physical developments during Bro. John ' s term other improvements might be named. A central heating system was installed in the school. Additional dressing room facili- ties were added to the gymnasium, and per- manent seats were erected in the gymna- sium. A shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Patroness of the Brothers of Mary, was erected on the Campus. The old temporary cafeteria building was removed and plans for a new cafeteria are now in the hands of the contractor. In the school itself a student council was organized; the school paper was revived after a lapse of ten years, under the title of The Blue and White. A school band was inaugurated under the direction of Bro. David Wolk. A Chapter of the National Honor Society, honoring the school patroness and bene- factress, Mrs. James F. Welder, Sr., was in- troduced. The purchase of a school bus and station-wagon improved the transportation of the athletic teams. The spiritual growth and development of the students was ever in the mind of Bro. John as principal. He concerned himself personally with the conduct of the Religion classes, with the weekly Confession and Communion on the part of the students. He insisted upon and promoted the First Friday devotion to the Sacred Heart. He was con- stantly alert for students likely to profess a calling to the priesthood or to the brother- hood. The athletic teams of the school received the principal ' s constant solicitude and co- operation. During his term of office the fol- lowing championships were won by the various teams: The Flyers ' football teams won the championship of the South Texas Interscholastic League Conference in 1952, ' 54, ' 55, ' 56, and ' 57. The Flyers retired the traveling conference trophy by winning it the third time in 1956. The basketball team won the conference championship in 1952, ' 53, ' 55, ' 56, and ' 57. The baseball team won the conference title in 1954 and ' 55, and placed second in the Texas Catholic state tournament held in Houston in 1956. Con- ference track laurels were garnered in 1956 and again in 1957. The students of St. Joseph ' s school extend their prayers and good wishes to Bro. John in his new assignment, but still regret to see him depart, for he was a father and an edu- cator that has been good for the welfare of St. Joseph ' s. ' ML ■x : ::i- ' ;j . ■' r K
