'f cf Dcdzwfivn MONSIGNOR BECK By unanimous declaration the Seniors of '57 agreed that we should pay tribute to our most loved teacher, the man who led us through our Sophomore year. Brother joseph Uvietta came to Victoria that year for the first time and so he knew little of us and we knew little of him. But it wasnt long before we realized his great ability in the teaching of Catholic Youth and in solving our many prob- lems, academic and otherwise. As we looked back to our Sophomore year we all agreed that we were indeed privileged to have Brother Joseph as our teacher, and many were truly sorry to see him leave Victoria. Therefore, we co-dedicate this annual to Brother joseph as a visual tribute of our thanks to him. And as a further tribute to him we wish him to know that we will always remember him in our prayers to Christ and His Blessed Mother, and we hope to live up to the Christian ideal he presented to us. When Monsignor Beck first arrived here in Victoria some 16 years ago, most of the Seniors of '57 were alive but still far from school. However, as the years passed and we grew up and started school, Monsignor Beck was still here and we began to realize how much he did for the two schools. True he didn't teach us but it was through him that many boys and girls had the opportunity to attend our schools. It was likewise through his assistance that our new school and our church are being built. liven now, he does on certain occasions say the Friday Mass for us. He isnit interested in us only, but rather in all the Catholic boys and girls in Victoria who will go to school someday. Many times, when we must sponsor an event, he will back it to the fullest extent. Wlien he and the Brothers get together, he inevitably asks about how the students are do- ing. He always has and always will have the best interests for us at heart. Therefore, we dedicate this humble work to him as a small recognition for his years of service for us so that we can have a better education. BROTHER JOSEPH UVIETTA, S.M. 1. -- ..?. u Z-12 :...:1,. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of God and drink His Blood you shall not have life in you. We, the class of 1957, realize more and more that in the Eucharist alone can we find real lifeg strength to resist the storms of temptations of our evil days and to preserve the faith in its vigor and purity. What is sweeter, more prec- ious and more blissful than this 'Divine Food', exclaimed St. Thomas of Villanova. The hun- gry person partakes thereof and is satiated, the needy receives IT and has his fill, the depressed partakes of IT and is inebriated with heavenly bliss, the just partakes of IT and becomes still more just, the devout penitent partakes of it and becomes purified. Truly the Eucharist is the pledge of every heavenly blessing and grace. Eucharist means Thanksgiving. We the Grad- uates of 1957 are thankful for the frequent opportunity of the reception of this sacrament, for weekly Mass at school, for our faith and our Catholic Education under the guidance of the Blessed Mother of the Eucharist in the person of the Brothers of Mary. His boys have served in all the branches of the armed forces and have fought in two wars. They are even now spread over the globe in hundreds of dif- ferent occupations. Perhaps through the years he has forgotten about some of them hut you may rest assured that they have not and never will forget him. This holds true for the class of 'S' also. For through all of our days of association with him we have always known that his prime pur- pose in life is to luring forth manhood in his seniors. Our Fathers' Club, as the Moth- the backbone of the their various projects, ers' Club, is school. With either old or new, the Fathers con- moral and financial tribute their support to which the student body is heartily indebted. Of outstand- ing note of this year, we, the stu- dents of St. Josephs, had an op- portunity to attend a Fathers' Club Meeting, thereby gaining new friendships and a first hand appre- ciation of how our Dads work for the school. We hope and pray that the boys who have yet to graduate may have the same opportunities and benefits of our ever strong and progressive Fathers' Club. S f Senior 611155 Ofhers PATRICK KELLY .... We will sally forth to meet face to face thisnrough and tumble world clad with the knowledge we have acquired with the help of our teachers. True enough we won't admit we are sorry to leave but as the time of graduation comes closer we are slowly realizing that we will miss our school very much. So we take this opportunity to offer our very deepest thanks to our teachers, past and present, who have been so patient with us in our more rowdy moods and who have taken a sincere interest in our welfare. Activities The new statue of our Lady of Grace erected by the Fathers' Club and Mothers Club. kelzyivus Activities St. joseph, the patron of our school, was the Foster Father of Christ. Therefore, it should be the ideal of the students at St. Josephs to become as Christ-like as was St. joseph who was so closely united with Him. At the beginning of each day we offer our daily acts to God. Religion is our first course, thereby giving it more significance. Each Friday the entire student body attends Mass in our gym and a great majority of it receives Holy Communion regularly. But besides these regular occurrences we also participate in public displays of our faith, such as the procession through town on the Feast of Christ the King, the Mass at St. Mary's Hall on the Feast of the Immaculate Con- ception. In the school gymnasium the High School students have the Liv- The Living Rosary enacted by the students of St. Josephs Father Otting explaining the value of the Sacrament of Con- fession during the retreat. ing Rosary in honor of the Blessed Virgin. Also the Brothers' chapel is very busy during the lunch hour as boys go to and fro to make a short visit to the Blessed Sacrament. Among the various religious clubs that the boys of St. joseph's attend are the Parish Sodality, the C.Y.O., the Choir, and at school we have the Seniors' St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Sodality. But aside from all these other re- ligious activities the one most important High School function throughout the year is the annual re- ffffat. Therefore it is apparent that a boy graduating from St. joseph's has ample opportunity for the needed re- ligious activities. Victorians view an expression of Catholic faith during the annual Christ the King Procession. Father Otting imparts the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament upon the student body.
