I joseph s I 906 I 956 At a quarter to elexen on thc morning of August 16 1906 three men rn dark surts alrghted from the train rn the lrttle tovsn of Vrctorra Texas A few weeks later these three rclrgrous the frrst Brothers of Mary to teach rn the crty opened classes rn the re opened St joseph s College Forty students reported on the frrst day and thus began the history of frfty years of Chrrstran education by the Society of Mary rn the Crty of Roses Irfty years later the scene rs changed St joseph s College rs now St joseph s High md Grade School located on 1 larger srte No longer do three Brothers compose the faculty tvyenty one Brothers and txno laymen are busy educating 650 students rn a crty of 50 000 inhabitants lrom the earliest days St osephs has been engaged rn the task of educating the xxholc person physical mental moral The Chrrstran education of youth vshrch rdeal thc Brothers hayc vyorlced fifty years to accomplish rs the theme of our 1956 EXCEL SIOR The proof of the frtty years rs rn the St osephs of today rn rts sprrrtual and material progress rn rts burldrngs student body and sprrrt What rt rs now rs due Many persons haxe helped build St osephs into what rt rs today the Brothers were not alone The parish priests of Vrctorra vxho helped from the beginning are also responsible From Nazaretl Conyent the Sisters haye always been 100 percent for St osephs And what would the school haye been without the benefactors the unselfrsh people vsho put the school into operation the parents who sacrrfrced to send therr students to 1 school vyrth turtron fees the students themselxes who were proud to be a part of St oseph s ' To all of these a debt of gratitude rs owed St oseph s does not begin rn 1906 Its history goes back to the pre Cryrl War days when father Augustine Gardet zealous pastor of St Marys was eager to establish Chrrstran education rn hrs parish Shortly after he solyed part of the problem by bringing Sisters to found Nazareth Academy Q1866j he organized St oseph s Institute 418685 Father Laurence Wyer continued hrs work and eyen attached a seminary to the school rn 1884 but with hrs death rn 1902 the school was unable to contrnue The few years vsrthout a school conyrnced the pastors Fathers ohn Sheehan Francis Heck and Lau rence Ltschenburgj that a school was necessary Therefore they prey arled upon the Superror of the Brothers Father George Meyer SM to send Brothers to therr crty Since then the school has enjoyed an increasing prosperity and thrs re brrth rs the yubrlee vshrch we celebr te thrs year May God and Mary and the patron of our school St joseph see fit to grant St joseph s many more such glorious years' I l O 9 7 7 ' 3 4 A I I I r ' 1 V y I 1 ' 1 . l 4 Y 4 ' ' 1 2' , , 3 - ' 1 ,r l .
