af Sf jascph 5 BROTHER JOHN KURZ S M Brother ohn Kurz principal for the past four years has seen a steady increase in both faculty and student body Each year the enrollment has increased until it hit the peak of 650 this year In 1954 it was eyident that there would be an increase of students and a necessary increase in faculty The friends of St Joseph s responded generously and the result was a new wing to the Brothers house com pleted in the fall of 1954 The St Joseph Flyers haye been members of the STCIL league since 1951 and haye been football champions four years out of fiye since then The 1955 56 school year has been a most remarkable year in more ways 1952 than one An all time high of 650 students was matched by the largest faculty the school has ever seen 21 Brothers and 2 lay teachers Practically every room in the school is used at all times the typing and music rooms have overflowed into the barn for the first time every grade in grade school had been divided into two classes Its progress has been great as seen in its first public appearance at Christmas and in subsequent programs The old school paper was revived in February under a new name the Blue and lVla1le Religious actiyity is highlighted by the silver jubilee celebration of one of the teachers Brother ames McMenamy SM and by the ordination of one of the former students of St Josephs Father Louis Fritz Athletically the 1955 56 season has been perhaps the greatest in the history of the school A large number of football hopefuls reported to Coach Collins and under great odds won the Conference Championship The basketball team fought off a bad early season record to win a hard fought Conference title and wound up the year with a state title in the Catholic tournament in February Track and baseball results were not yet eyident when the yearbook went to press but the members of the teams vyere hoping to duplicate the feats of the other sports For all these accomplishments and progress in this year of the golden anniyersary we are thankful to eyeryone who helped in any way throughout the years to make St Joseph s what it is today teachers students friends May God and His Most Blessed Mother bless them all' 1 O In September the St. Joseph's Band was organized, and met with enthusiastic approval.
