REIN THE FLYER COACHING STAFF Bro. Otto and Mr. Jim Collins FLYERS DOWN YOAKUM B 35-0 St. Joseph won its first game by a huge score, sending every back across the double stripe. Bill Janecek led the attack with touchdown runs of 14 and 9 yards, and threw a 3 3 -yard pass to End Don Sion for another. Buddy Riley ran a close second as he crashed over tackle for six points, and kicked four extra points in four tries. John Hilscher fought his way for 33 yards and a touchdown, in the longest run of the game. Jerry Rossi added a point with a two-yard sneak over Guard. Bill thrilled the fans with superb runs of 82, 85, and 26 yards. Buddy dis- played his style by blasting for 21 yards for a touchdown, and adding two extra points later on. Guard Pat Tagliabue shared scoring honors by breaking through to recover a fumble in the end zone. The losers gained some consolation with a touch- down pass and a safety of their own. The high-scoring fullback tallied for twenty points, with a 5 -yard smash, a 4-yard plunge, a 2 3 -yard scamper, and two extra points kicked. Pat Tagliabue was again in the scoring spotlight with a safety to his credit. Apart from a 27-yard touchdown pass which was the visitor ' s lone tally, the game was strictly a Flyer feast. Bill Janecek scored 12 points on a 54-yard punt return and a 52 yard run on which he had the spotlight stolen from him by Bud y Riley who after blocking for him once, got up, caught Janecek, and blocked for him again, thus displaying the spirit cJf team- work that led to the 8 Flyer victories. Buddy Riley scored 6 on a 50- yard jaunt to pay dirt. Little brothers Doug and Mike got into the scoring act also: Mike with a 2 -yard plunge for an extra point and Doug by his catching of two of Janecek ' s passes, for a touchdown, and for an extra point. Jack Webb scored 6 points on a 1 yard plunge and 1 point after touchdown. Allan Smith scored 2 when he recovered in the end zone a punt which he and Don Sion had teamed up to block. It was in this game that the fine end runs of Bill Janecek and Buddy Riley that had been accounting for most of the previous yardage were stopped. It was therefore up to the line to open the holes that allowed the backs to: gain 85 yards rushing and 9 first downs and block for the passes of Bill Janecek that accounted for 114 yards. The lone Flyer tally came on the 31 -yard pass from Bill Janecek to Doug Riley. Buddy Riley kicked the extra point. Above: John McAlpine, Flyer Right Guard on Of- fense and Defense. FLYERS TAME BROWNSVILLE 34-0 A thoroughly aroused Flyer team took to the field against the Blood- hounds of Brownsville, determined to avenge the defeat they had suffered the past week. The first half saw Buddy Riley cross the double stripe once and kick 2 extra points. Another touchdown was made in the first half by Doug Riley, who caught a 1-yard pass from Janecek. It was in the first half of this game that a human bombshell came to life in the f rm of Mike Riley. Mike had formerly been eclipsed by Buddy and Janecek but he now displayed running almost as powerful as Buddy ' s and combined this with the ability to look for his holes to run himself into the spotlight in this and the following games. In the second half the Flyers humiliated the Bloodhounds by shunning smart plays in preference to plays through the middle. Above: Jack Wfbb, Half- back and Defensive Sec- ondary. In the second half the Flyers starte moving and Buddy Riley scored behind good line blocking. In th last quarter Mike Riley scored twice. He galloped 19 yards and 5 yard for his touchdowns. Janecek scored his second extra point and Budd smashed off tackle for the other. Then the Sacred Heart Indians cam suddenly to life and the clock had to hurry to catch up with thei scoring, one of the touchdowns on a line play, the other on a pass. Th scoring served only as consolation, as the Flyers held on for the mudd victory. Above: Buzzie Sion, de- fensive Right Tackle, who was named to the All- Conference Team. FLYERS BRING LAREDO HOME 26-0 The Seniors knew this was the last game before the home folks, and it was the Flyers ' Homecoming, and the game was all Flyers. The line was in good blocking form as all the touchdowns were made on runs through the center. Mike Riley was high scorer with 12 points; one of his touchdowns was a 53- yard run off tackle and the other a 4-yard blast over tackle. Buddy Riley went through tackle too for hi 12-yard scoring jaunt. Buddy added two points after touchdown. Bill Janecek tallied on a 6-yard keeper play through center. The Flyer aerial attack gained almost twice as many yards as Corpus. The game was highlighted by several sustained marches by the Flyers, two of which were capped by touchdowns. The first of these came in the second penod .when Buddy Riley plunged for four yards off right tackle. The next came in the third period as Janecek sneaked over from the two. Buddy Riley brought his total to seven points when he added the extra point this touchdown. The successful season for which the Seniors had started working late in the summer was at an end. George Regan, late Principal of Nazareth Academy, who proved herself all things to all whom she served during her fifty years of unselfish labor for the cause of Christian education at Nazareth Academy. , jfli ■ w-rf M- ' .2%yars Her memory needs no graven tribute rare To laud her life before the eyes alone. The love and gratitude of countless hearts Endureth far beyond fair words on stone. Nazareth Academy Senior Class foreword If words reflect the heart, then from our lips Should flow a melody of highest praise To those who firmly held our halting steps As we assayed to grasp the Torch Ablaze. You who have labored for our greater weal, Beloved Parents, Teachers, Pastors, too. We have a debt, a heavy debt to pay, And herewith pledge a debtor ' s bond to you: For all the sacrifice and care and love That made our graduation dream come true. We plead in earnestness to God above For grace to live as you would have us to. And, now, a fond farewell to halls and bowers Replete with varied memories of years. Gray days and gold have dulled or charmed the house, Oft to depress — again to calm our fears. But, gray or gold, each has its purpose wrought — To arm ' is for the crucial days to come Or give to weariness a soothing draught Through golden memories of work well done. Thus girded, do we leave; and, as we go. To face life ' s problems, weightier by far. We whisper thanks to God, for well we know Dear Nazareth shall be our guiding star. V V. x V - s -w 7777 T7?
