S .v 1 Glass gfisbry In recording the events that have played so important a part in the history of the class of '46, we shall liken our history to a journey. In the contemplation of any journey the first thing which has to be done is to plan an itinerary. As students we were quite fortunate in having our itinerary, our courses of study and various other school activities, planned for us. Without a doubt, our itinerary was the best for us, because it was planned by the best educational minds who know that certain worth-while subjects must be included in the curriculum, in the itinerary of our scholastic journey. Of course when one goes on a journey he needs suliicient funds as railway systems and steamship companies do not extend credit and the law deals quite harshly with stowaways. Here again, we were most fortunate for our scholastic journey has been financed by our good parents. During our four years on this educational trip we have met those who have made our lives much brighter and we have also been privileged to come in daily contact with those, who, having once traveled the same scholastic route, were able to guide us to the most worth-while ideals of character and industry which but few of our text books ever mentioned. The best portion of a trip is the end of the journey when we renew the many pleasant incidents that it has been our privilege to enjoy and then we have the satisfaction of having reached our objective. We, the members of the class of 1946, feel the same sense of satisfaction because we have successfully completed a most profitable journey. Let us then briefly renew our journey of the last four years and thus experience the pleasure gained from a retrospection of our days at St. Joseph's. It was in September, 1942 that our high school education began. We were naturally very enthusiastic and asked many eager questions. As one would expect, a few were tempted to give up Algebrag some others felt they could never conquer the difficulties of Latin. However our memorable Initiation Dance seemed to dispel some of our fears and put us in good humor. Then came our first retreat, after that, we seemed better able to carry on. The year passed all too quickly and with final exams over, we realized we were Sophomores. It would take too long to renew all the events of this second year, but we shall mention a few of them. Geometry, French, and Biology were some of our new subjects. French and Latin assignments were everlasting- GEM gf-zlsfory ly being mixed up. We began this year to take a real part in school activities, and many were the anxious pleas showered on our parents in ho of attending the evening dances and basketball games. But, Iii? its predecessor, this year, too, simply flew by and before we knew it we were Upperclassmen. In our Junior year the two classes A and B were united and we continued as the Junior class. This year will be unforgettable for those three o'clock sessions. Our first attempt at sponsoring a social event was on St. Valentine's Day. The experience stood us in good stead when in May we held our J unior-Senior Prom. The intricacies of typing and stenography kept the B division busy for many hours while the A section was struggling with Cicero and his orations. As the warm sunny days of June stole upon us we suddenly realized we were, at last, Seniors. Our Senior year opened rather late in September and our annual Retreat conducted by the Rev. Chas. R. Callahan, C. S. C. was the first important event of the year. This retreat, the last of our high school days, will be long remembered. Almost immediately after Retreat closed we were saddened by the sudden death of our late beloved pastor, the Very Reverend James J. Reynolds. Father Reynolds, in his quiet unassuming way was always interested in our welfare and his death was quite a shock to the entire student body. Regular classes then began to function in earnest, in the Senior class we soon learned there is no place for idle people. We received our class rings and with them senior responsibilities. Then we heard the good news that the Right Reverend Joseph Hewetson had been appointed as our new pastor. On December the first, the school held a reception for Monsignor Hewetson and from then on we knew we had gained a friend in our new pastor. Events, scholastic, athletic, and social, began to follow in rapid succession. The most important of which have been recorded in our school calendar. The Sodality held an important place in our program throughout the year and its activities were brought to a close with the May Crowning. The Basketball Season was gloriously closed with the winning of the State Trophy bringing Paterson and St. J oseph's much honor in the field of athletics. As this year book goes to print, we look forward to Our Mother's Day Tea, Class Night, Senior Class Communion Breakfast, and Commencement. We have had a most wonderful voyage during our four years in Saint J oseph's, but like all other voyages it must come to an end. The open road lies before us, just how far and how successfully we shall travel it is. en- tirely up to us. One thing is certain we have been well prepared and in saying good-bye to our devoted Sisters of Charity, we pledge, as our token of gratitude, that We shall ever be true to God, to Country, to Saint J oseph's . .East Qesfanzenf WE THE MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1946 OF THE HIGH SCHOOL OF SAINT JOSEPH m the County of PASSAIC and State of NEW JERSEY bemg of Sound M1nd and Understandmg do on thls 20th day ofJ une A D 1946 make and publlsh th1s our last W111 and Testament 1n the followmg manner that 1S to say FIRST To our Pastor and pr1ests of our parlsh we bequeath our gratl tude and apprec1at1on and ln return ask an occaslonal prayer from them SECOND To the S1sters and other members of the faculty we bequeath our love and smcere thanks for all they have done to make our graduatlon possxble THIRD To the Freshmen the three happy years whlch are st1ll thelrs FOURTH To the Sophomores an ever mcreasmg school Splflt FIFTH To the Junlors To RUTH WEIDMULLER Mayleen Magu1re s meek and placld d1spos1t1on To ANGELO RUGGIERO and LEO WALSH Paul Carpenters frrendly attrtude toward others CARL HOKE-Edlth Gravel s best seat ln the semor class JAMES HEINTJES JOHN OHARE and FRANCIS LE MUNYON W11l1am Forbes ab1l1ty to make excuses CAROLYN KELLIHER and JOAN ROBERTSON Al1ce Kennedy s cheermg ab1l1ty JOAN BOUCHIER and DORIS WOLEK Patr1c1a Kellys attractlveness LILLIAN WITHAM Lorrame Guays qulet nature ANN McKENNA--Cla1re Farrell s vlvaclousness EDWARD CHADWICK and BERNARD CORBETT Eugene Semar s co operat1ve Splflt HELEN SCULLION DOROTHY MEEHAN and EVELYN MCKIERNAN Ann Boltons mastery of typewrltmg FRANCIS AGNEW--John Dunn s reserved seat 111 church MARJORIE RYAN Rosemar1e Nusss everlastmg habrt of chewmg gum LORRAINE SWEENEY and ALICE MAE GREENE Allce Cannmg s petlteness FRED KIMMERLE and THOMAS VARGO--John Clarkens extreme thoughtfullness JOSEPH CRIST and JOAN LAMELA Dons Kay s place on the honor roll FRANK HENNESSEY Eugene Wyles embarrasslng blush To JOHN MOONEY and CHRISTOPHER FOX Fred Watsons deportment marks I L Y 1 , l l . 4 .q , u ,u I . , 1 , . :ii 4 n - a . , 1 i. , 7 9 :- ' , :- , . . . . Although our rally fell short and we lost by 5 points it was a defeat of which we are proud. As an anti-climax to a good season we entered the N. J. S. I. A. A. tournament, and for the first round opposition we drew Our Lady of Valley who had beaten us twice during the regular season. We managed to eke a 44-43 victory when Valley missed a foul shot in the last second of play. Through this victory, we became the first Paterson team to ever gain the semi-finals since Central turned the trick back in the thirties. St. Michael's was our semi-final opponent and although the game was expected to be close, we continued our remarkable tourney play by winning 52-32, and becoming the first Paterson team to gain the finals in the twenty-eight year history of the tournament. Then we journeyed to the Elizabeth Armory to play Immaculate Conception in the first game of the day-long finals. We won the game and the championship, 45-37. After the game Jack Mahoney and Jim Gavin, the two co-captains, were awarded the two beautiful trophgs which they accepted on behalf of St. J oseph's Athletic Association asia, 'ell as miniature gold basketballs, which were to be distributed to the team. The J. V. team enjoyed a successful season, winning 14 games and dropping 7 for a 750 average. The boys who made up the jay-vee team and who show great promise are Bernie Corbett, Walt Hess, Jim Domm, Andy Mc?Laughlin, Joe Semar, Victor Wramage, Leo Sherins, Bill Scullion, Joe Crist, and George Gretkowski. We wish to give a vote of thanks to the cheer leaders, who attended the games and were always ready to give the team the encouragement they needed. Thanks are also due to our Moderator, Father Hayes, our Principal, Sister Grace Vincent, and the members of the Faculty, who along with the entire student body, gave our team wonderful support during the season. JOSEPH 46 Immaculate Conception 35 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SUMMARIES St. J oseph's team brought honor to the school by winning the Post- Season N.J.S.I.A.A. tournament, and becoming the first Paterson team to turn the trick since the tournament began. Our Varsity Five drew Our Lady of Valley as first round opposi- tion, and although they had beaten us twice during the regular season, we eked out a victory, 44-43. Advancing into the semi-finals, we defeated St. Michael's, Jersey City, by a 20 point margin, with our boys playing one of their finest offen- sive games of the year. In the finals at Elizabeth, Immaculate Conception was chosen to be our opponent and we won the Championship and the trophies by the score of 46 to 35. The 1945-46 Basketball season was brought to a close with a testi- monial dinner at the Alexander Hamilton Hotel which was given the team and cheerleaders by the Right Reverend Joseph Hewetson. At the dinner the Athletic Association was presented with a scroll by the Old Timers Associationl' in recognition of their fine achievements.
