On a clear September morning in 1940. forty-six members of our class hopped aboard the ship. Freshman Studies . The first stop. Re- ligion, was familiar, while Latin. Science, and Algebra proved to be brain- teasers. Two months had glided by when Father Daisey conducted a retreat for the student body. Many of the students seemed to reap many spiritual advantages from these three days of prayer and recollection. A serious accident made it impossible for one of our classmates. Norma Neuviller. to continue her course with us much to our regret. After a glorious Easter cruise We disembarked at the Catholic Stu- dents' Mission Crusade Bazaar for a period of three days. The beauti- fully decorated booths. and the many useful gifts displayed, gave ample proof of the genuine missionary spirit of the Crusaders. Now we are approaching our last port - the final examinations! Each one prays and hopes that his yearly average will purchase a pass- port to the Sophomore year. Then. we freshmen of 915 should be among the healthiest specimens in the world for we have done plenty ol' it, On September Bth. with thirty-seven members in the party under our competent leaders. we began our ascent ot' Mt, High School. Though study clubs have not been formed. as usual. spiritual treasuries have been collected and the number of Masses. Communions. and Prayers have mounted high. In response to the plea of the Reverend Edward Garesche. S. J.. medi- cal supplies have been collected from many generous physicians and sent to the missionaries in war-torn countries. The major event of this scholastic year has been our annual mission bazaar, the careful planning of which was demonstrated by the beauti- fully decorated booths and the variety of gifts. All who attended were impressed by this outward manifestation of genuine mission spirit. Last year's bazaar resulted in our being the banner school in the Diocese of Paterson: the splendid sum of Five hundred twenty-three dollars con- tributed to the missions for the school year of 1939-40. Through it, they have obtained a better idea of wholesome and worthwhile literature - literature that should be read. At its meetings. reports have been made ol' approved books and in this way many who had very little interest in books before. have cultivated a love for reading. The Club has benefited the entire school by contributing books to the library. This society not only has provided intellectual advantages but amusement as well through its occasional social meetings and its annual Tea Dance. Many of the present Seniors have enjoyed membership in the Liter- ary Club and are the last of its charter members to graduate. Joseph Chessare. '41 Page Sixty 5 ,X,sf1!l 2 jasebaff There was a fine turnout for spring baseball practice this year. Many vigorous underclassmen together with the Veteran senior members gath- ered on the home field to assure a successful season. The probable starting line-up is as follows: Catcher. Paul Connolly: pitchers, Art Hillman. Ted Fajardog first base. John Agnewg second base, Joseph Sloang third base, Francis Marshallg short stop, Bill Dolandg right field. Bernie Colaiannig center field. Ray Plattellg left field. James Heinzlernan. With this team we predict an unprecedented number of victories for Saint Josephs Joseph Chessare.
