The Plan of the Josemont IS Derlwed from the Hlstory of Fremont The 1925 Josemont has been planned to reflect and perpetuate not merely another year of school l1fe at St Joseph H1gh School but the school l1fe of St Joseph Hlgh agamst the colorful background of Its hls torlc settlng It s very name which IS a contracted comblnatlon of Joseph and Fre mont has been chosen Wlth a v1ew to dlfferentlatmg It from annuals of other schools of the same name by addmg the d1st1nct1ve local touch It seems but log1cal therefore to follow out th1S ldea by drawlng upon local hlstory for the themes of lllustratlon and motlfs of deslgn So rlch and varled has been the avallable source materlal that lt was lmposslble to exhaust the matter 1n a slngle volume but made p0SS1blQ the plan of a consecutlve serles of annuals each of Wh1Ch wlll prove a sequel to that of the precedmg year by hnklng the h1stor1c assoclatlon of thlS locahty w1th the present development of St Joseph Hlgh School The hlstory of the Aborlgmes the Wyandot Indlans has furnlshed the keynote of deslgn and lllustratlon as well as the unlfylng prlnclple for the 1925 Josemont Every phase of Wyandot llfe from the httle pa poose to the Indlan graves finds adaptatlon and apphcatlon ln the lllus 1nto the border des1gn and lettemng A brlef summary of the early hls tory of Fremont W'lll serve to elucldate the sketches Durlng that perlod of years Whlch fills the western annals w1th storxes of mtrlgue and bloody confl1ct the plams and pra1r1es of the Lower San dusky Valley were the homes of the most powerful and most generous of the savage natlons The border country of Pennsylvanla V1rg1n1a Ken tucky and the first settlements 1n Ohlo saw the Indlan at war and too often hls character has been estlmated by h1S conduct when 1nsp1red bv a natural deslre for revenge Here we see h1m at home far removed from h1s enemy and percene the softer s1de of hls untamed nature Less than a century ago these plams now covered by a thrlvlnfr clty presented all that lnterestlng var 1ety of scenes of Indlan llfe pr1m1t1ve and agrlcultural--crude cablns canoe bulldlng amusement the councll fire around whlch palnted war rlors planned campalgns 'md expedltlons havlng for thelr ultlmate object the preserxatlon of the xast beautlful forest and the beloved huntmg grounds the return and welcome of war partles and the terrlfylng and not always harmless treatment of prlsoners As the story leads Hundreds of years ago back ln the age of the anclents a beautlful rn er sang happllv as 1ts waters coursed rapldlv to the sea and on 1ts shores the mound bullders went about the task of erect 1ng lastlng monuments to thelr memory Then another race came to take tihelr place and we find the sole record of these people 1n old Indlan tra 1t1on 'I I I 'I I 4' KA - is at I I les se n .' vl,l l- je .. K. 1- 'ff' 5 I .I .5 if Athletlcs lo brag l1ttle to show up well to crow quletly 1f 1n luck to put up and shut up 1f beaten these are the characterlstlcs of a true sportsman The above words were on the l1ps of every student at the reorgamza t1on of the St Joseph Hlgh School Athlethlc Assoclatlon The meetlng took place the elghteenth of September and the followmg offlcers were elected Faculty Manager Dr J J Vogel Student Manager Edgar Recktenwald Upon the reorganlzatlon of the Assoclatlon there was a strong de sxre to be represented by a football team but th1s proved unsuccessful because of the lack of materlal Be1ng dlsappomted on th1s account all looked forward Wlth great 1nterest and enthuslasm to the openlng of the Basketball Season whlch seemed very promlsmg About the mlddle of November practlce sesslons were begun under the watchful eye of Coach Dr C I Kuntz Wlth elght out of nlne letter men back for duty the outfit was soon worked mto the pmk of condxtlon W1th two men on the squad who had been selected on the all county team and others of the same callber thmgs seemed very brlght mdeed We started out the season by a vlctory over the strong St John s team of Llma Although our Basketeers were out Welghed by a large margm they downed the v1s1tors w1th seemlngly great ease Next we encountered our fellow nelghbors Clyde Hlgh and although our opponents fought hard all dur1ng the game they fell before the on slaught of the FIVE Basketeers Then came the surpr1se of the season St Anns our competltors for c1ty champxonshxp threw out the challenge to our squad Wlth all expectatlons of a V1Ct0I'y they entered the game but at the final they falled to score a polnt The first game for c1ty honors wlth Fremont Hlgh was the next on the program Weakened by the 1nJ ury of Capt n Gabel the team attacked the down h1llers and after a strongly fought game St Joe s were defeated by a narrow margln of one pomt The tr1p to Delphos was then planned whlch was lndeed a long and tlresome drlve Weakened by the long rlde and sllghtly out of form the team fell before the St John s qumtet ln a hotly contested battle St Marys of Marlon were our next meat Although much heavler and more experlenced they were defeated by the fast movlng St Joes machme We then returned the game whlch Clyde gave us on our floor Al though the score was very close the first half the second half the Basket eers marched on untll they had completely routed thelr fellow townsmen The next week two games wlth the fast golng WOOdVllle Hlgh outflt were booked. 'nv' Soclal Events The SOC1al season always gay for the Semors and Jumors was at tended thlS year by several altogether charmlng and dellghtful partles The opemng party was held on Hallowe en ln the Hlgh School Audl torlum with the Senlors as hosts and hostesses to the Jumors Through many nooks and corners the J umors were led by ghosts that rattled chalns and shueked vslerdly as they conducted the pale faced guests to the audl torlum whlch was beautlfully decorated to f1t the occaslon Autumn leaves Jack o lantel ns and streamers lent the1r charm to the scene whlle a glowlng orange harxest moon hung low over the tables g1v1ng a beauty both s1ngular and fantastlc to the general appearance of the hall Here 1n thls lovely settlng the hours sllpped qulckly by and only too soon came the hour to break up and depart to our xarlous homes The flrst Semor Class gatherxng took place durmg the last week of Sclence Room conserted for the occaslon 1nto a cozy d1n1ng room the semor glrls prepared and served a delxclous three course dmner After dllllllg everyone ascended to the second floor where a soclal hour was spent and followlng thls all wended thelr ways homeward Wlth a new treasure to S1019 away ln thelr memory books On the seventh of Februarv the Jumors lssued 1nv1tat1ons to the Semors for a Valentlne party The affalr was g1ven IH the audltorlum under the ausplces of the faculty The tables were a1t1st1cally decorated w1th hearts and xalentmes approprlate for the season Many contests were enjoyed by those present A dehghtful luncheon was served at long tables arranged m the form of the letter V After an ex emng of great engoyment the melody of Home Sweet Home remlnded us that lt was tlme to depart We W1Sh to thank the Jumors one and all for the gl and sp1r1t whlch was made mamfest durmg our Semor year for they as well as all the other members of the Hlgh School haxe proved SIHCCFQ and loyal whether from a soclal or busmess new pomt In June w1ll take place the Jumor Semor banquet the blggest soclal ex ent of the season and lt IS wlth pleasure and antlclpatlon and yet not altogether wlthout regret that we look forward to lt for It means along vnth othe1 thlngs that we must part from our beloxed fellow school mates the Jumors S R O 5 I I I '- 'lf '.
