,. ,Vg Synopsis Frau Lindemann, the keeper, and Rosa, the maid, are excitedly making preparations for the Princess, who is to stop at the Inn for an hour or so to rest before making the descent to the Springs. The Princess, a quiet unassuming girl, soon to be the bride of a grand-duke whom she scarcely knows, requests the utmost secrecy in this event. Strubel is the only ditiiculty in Frau Lindemann's efforts to carry out this command. A cheerful, unaffected. handsome young man, a tutor in order to exist, an idealist in order to live, certainly must be kept away. And more, for wceks he has been in love with the unknown Princess and has sat for hours before a telescope on the innkeeper's veranda, looking down into the palace garden and writing verses to her. Frau Lindemann dares not tell him why she requests his absence. so she treats him very coolly, thinking in that way to be rid of him. The Princess arrives. Everything is as she requested. The glass covered veranda is locked. the garden empty, her room ready. She, with her lady-in-waiting, enter the house. 'but in a few moments she returns alone, and finds a young man standing motionless before the telescope. She is startled and undecided what to do. Strubel. undaunted by a locked door has come in by a window, and now greets her cordially. He sees only a simple little girl of his own class. The conversation is very frank and friendly and he confesses what the Princess has meant to him. She must always be a far-away Princess, because he is only an ordinary fellow. Frau von Halldorf, her two daughters Liddy and Milly, seeking social favor, enter and reveal the identity of the girl. The Princess, not understanding, offers a rose to Strubel, who, disappointed in his ideal of the Princess, rejects it, bows, and goes out. Dec.
