Qgpil ianl Basketball Basketball in High School fared well. considering the cir- cumstances under which our team had to play. Although not so successful as last year in the number of games won, there was just as good material developed. The past season brought us eight victories and six defeats, besides leaving five regulars for next year's team. Rose and Gustafson CSeniorsJ are the men to leave. 'We came near winning the XVarren Cup again this year. losing the deciding match of the cup race to Benton Harbor at Niles in a heart breaking game in which we were leading at the end of the first half. 14 to 5. Owing to some strange misfortune we came through the battle at the small end of an 18 to 17 score. The team was composed of the following letter men: Fagan. Rose, Schreiber fcaptainj. Gustafson. Boani, C. Zick. XV. Zick and Brunke. The Senior class challenged any class to a basketball game for the championship of the high school. but as no class accepted they claim the honor. K. Gustafson, '17. Track Considerable interest has been shown in track athletics for the last two years. The 1916 season opened with the first B. C. H. S. A. A. Meet held May 27. St. Joseph took first honors and brought home a beautiful loving cup. On June 10 the team competed in the State Meet at M. C. A. winning second place and bringing home another cup. The class of '17 was well represented on this team. Hatch took part in the high-jump and pole-vault. Rose ran the 220 yd., 440 yd.. and a lap in the relay. and Gersonde the mile. XYith these men as the main nucleus and good material in the school. a good track season is anticipated for the year 1917. R G '17 . ., . Tennis Tennis did not play a very great part in our spring athletics until 1915- Through the cooperation of Mr. Merrill the tennis courts on Niles Avenue were built. Although class teams were chosen, no out-of-town games were played. Last year tennis became fully established. girls, and boys' singles and doubles being played. The Senior team defeated the Juniors. but Bill Kent Uuniorb won a place on the High School team. Very unfortunately both of our teams were defeated by Benton Harbor. This year both singles and doubles have been arranged with Benton Harbor and will probably take place on the ninth of June. It is also possible that games will be played with Niles. R. P., '17. This has made it possible for the Seniors to keep the scholarship banner all the year. G- Rodgers, 'IT. Military Training Military training was made a part of the high school curri- culum in September, 1916. At first the course was elective for Sophomores and Freshmen. The work was supervised by Mr. Hood, who has had wide experience in military affairs at M. A. C. The boys were drilled once a week all through the winter when the weather permitted, the infantry drill regu- lations of the United States army being used. Upon newsof the declaration of war, military training was made compulsory for all boys, including Seniors and Juniors. The Seniors and Juniors are organized in a separate com- pany composed ot' 24 uniformed men. This company has access to the rifle range of the St. Joseph Hifle Club, and bids fair to become an important factor in high school activities. E S '17 1 . ., . A challenge given out by the Freshmen to any of the classes or allied teams was taken up by the Seniors. The game was played on the remainder of the Edgewater Field. The Seniors came out at the long end of a 30 to O score- HAH! HAH! HAH! Seniors! NYith the advent of a new athletic field next year St. Joe High should have a good team. Here's to FOUTBALL in '18. C.
