Page Eight ,. ,Vg Synopsis Frau Lindemann, the keeper, and Rosa, the maid, are excitedly making preparations for the Princess, who is to stop at the Inn for an hour or so to rest before making the descent to the Springs. The Princess, a quiet unassuming girl, soon to be the bride of a grand-duke whom she scarcely knows, requests the utmost secrecy in this event. Strubel is the only ditiiculty in Frau Lindemann's efforts to carry out this command. A cheerful, unaffected. handsome young man, a tutor in order to exist, an idealist in order to live, certainly must be kept away. And more, for wceks he has been in love with the unknown Princess and has sat for hours before a telescope on the innkeeper's veranda, looking down into the palace garden and writing verses to her. Frau Lindemann dares not tell him why she requests his absence. so she treats him very coolly, thinking in that way to be rid of him. The Princess arrives. Everything is as she requested. The glass covered veranda is locked. the garden empty, her room ready. She, with her lady-in-waiting, enter the house. 'but in a few moments she returns alone, and finds a young man standing motionless before the telescope. She is startled and undecided what to do. Strubel. undaunted by a locked door has come in by a window, and now greets her cordially. He sees only a simple little girl of his own class. The conversation is very frank and friendly and he confesses what the Princess has meant to him. She must always be a far-away Princess, because he is only an ordinary fellow. Frau von Halldorf, her two daughters Liddy and Milly, seeking social favor, enter and reveal the identity of the girl. The Princess, not understanding, offers a rose to Strubel, who, disappointed in his ideal of the Princess, rejects it, bows, and goes out. Dec. Page Nine L - CQJJ lcrivir btr Dramatics XVith its characteristic grit, zeal, and determination, the class of 1917 presented the Annual Junior Farce, given June 1st and 5th at the Caldwell Theater. It proved to be one of the biggest successes in the history of the school. The play. Looking for Mary Jane,', is a delightful three act comedy, simple and fresh in its fun, and not out of the reach of amateurs. The farce was produced under the able supervision of Mrs. Stuart Barlow and throughout the play the master hand of the instructor was seen in the details of the hbusinessl' and the smoothness with which it was presented. XVe do not assume that the cast paralleled the work of professionals, but we are justly proud of every one as an amateur. Each one contributed his share to the success of the play. Senior Glee Club A new and interesting feature has been added to the High School life this year. It is the Senior Glee Club, which was organized the first of the term. All the Seniors have been interested in the plan from the tirst with the result that it has been developed into an organization worthy of any high school. Its success and development is not entirely due to the Seniors. A great share of the credit should be given to Miss Hannan who has been an able director. From a social stand- point it has also been very successful. The members have Page Ten i ii? 6.-2. V spent and enjoyed many pleasant evenings together during the winter months. It has been a means of promoting class spirit and unity. In later years when we look back on our High School days, we will recall with pleasure. our Senior Glee Club. F. P. Society Socially the class of nineteen seventeen has made a mark. As early as the spring of our Freshmen year we entertained the Seniors at a beach party. Mr. and Mrs. Ben. Kasischke chaperoned. During the Christmas vacation of our Sophomore year. the social committee arranged for a stunt', party at Parish hall. Everyone was assigned a stunt to perform and after these we danced to the wee small hours. NVith the Junior year. as upper classmen. we began activ- ities in the fall. t'On with the dance let the joy be unconfinedf, This was the spirit shown at the Junior-Senior Prom given at the Catholic Auditorium in December. 1915. Between Combs music and the lure of the lights. everyone had a memorable time- In fact. the affair was such a success that it has been made an annual holiday party. No Senior class has ever been more royally entertained than when at Edgewater Club we entertained the graduating class of sixteen. After a banquet tit for a king, dancing to Combs' orchestra was enjoyed. Most of the Senior girls have had Domestic Science and have the reputation of being able to prepare good meals but the spread at which the girls entertained themselves surpassed all previous dinners in the domestic science rooms. The wash- ing of the dishes was left to the faculty members present and then we all went to the movie. Burkhard's Hall has been the scene of the Crescent Ban- quets for the last three years. These were banquets in name only. but this year in the new gymnasium. the Seniors will supervise a real banquet. Even though we have had some mighty fine times, high school has not been a cocoon or a bee cell from which we might emerge the butterflies and drones of society. M. E. B., '17. Scholarship The class of '17 has always ranked high in scholarship. Since we first entered high school we have been climbing the steep road to success in our studies. XVe are proud to sav that whatever we have undertaken in this line has been a success. The Seniors have been represented in all the activities of the school. This year three members of the debating class were Page Eleven .J , -N,-,7 753 liXQii U3-' Seniors. A member of the class of '17 represented the school in oratory. Competition has been strong not only with the other classes but also among the Seniors themselves. This has made it possible for the Seniors to keep the scholarship banner all the year. G- Rodgers, 'IT. Military Training Military training was made a part of the high school curri- culum in September, 1916. At first the course was elective for Sophomores and Freshmen. The work was supervised by Mr. Hood, who has had wide experience in military affairs at M. A. C. The boys were drilled once a week all through the winter when the weather permitted, the infantry drill regu- lations of the United States army being used. Upon newsof the declaration of war, military training was made compulsory for all boys, including Seniors and Juniors. The Seniors and Juniors are organized in a separate com- pany composed ot' 24 uniformed men. This company has access to the rifle range of the St. Joseph Hifle Club, and bids fair to become an important factor in high school activities. E S '17 1 . ., . A challenge given out by the Freshmen to any of the classes or allied teams was taken up by the Seniors. The game was played on the remainder of the Edgewater Field. The Seniors came out at the long end of a 30 to O score- HAH! HAH! HAH! Seniors! NYith the advent of a new athletic field next year St. Joe High should have a good team. Here's to FOUTBALL in '18. C. Qgpil ianl Basketball Basketball in High School fared well. considering the cir- cumstances under which our team had to play. Although not so successful as last year in the number of games won, there was just as good material developed. The past season brought us eight victories and six defeats, besides leaving five regulars for next year's team. Rose and Gustafson CSeniorsJ are the men to leave. 'We came near winning the XVarren Cup again this year. losing the deciding match of the cup race to Benton Harbor at Niles in a heart breaking game in which we were leading at the end of the first half. 14 to 5. Owing to some strange misfortune we came through the battle at the small end of an 18 to 17 score. The team was composed of the following letter men: Fagan. Rose, Schreiber fcaptainj. Gustafson. Boani, C. Zick. XV. Zick and Brunke. The Senior class challenged any class to a basketball game for the championship of the high school. but as no class accepted they claim the honor. K. Gustafson, '17. Track Considerable interest has been shown in track athletics for the last two years. The 1916 season opened with the first B. C. H. S. A. A. Meet held May 27. St. Joseph took first honors and brought home a beautiful loving cup. On June 10 the team competed in the State Meet at M. C. A. winning second place and bringing home another cup. The class of '17 was well represented on this team. Hatch took part in the high-jump and pole-vault. Rose ran the 220 yd., 440 yd.. and a lap in the relay. and Gersonde the mile. XYith these men as the main nucleus and good material in the school. a good track season is anticipated for the year 1917. R G '17 . ., . Tennis Tennis did not play a very great part in our spring athletics until 1915- Through the cooperation of Mr. Merrill the tennis courts on Niles Avenue were built. Although class teams were chosen, no out-of-town games were played. Last year tennis became fully established. girls, and boys' singles and doubles being played. The Senior team defeated the Juniors. but Bill Kent Uuniorb won a place on the High School team. Very unfortunately both of our teams were defeated by Benton Harbor. This year both singles and doubles have been arranged with Benton Harbor and will probably take place on the ninth of June. It is also possible that games will be played with Niles. R. P., '17. Page Thirteen A n Nj Ni ' ii of ' ' 'A' Junior Achievements Listen! Tug of war means to pull with all your might and main and win. The Junior class of '17 are working up to that point. Our purpose is to enter as Seniors without a stain and fully prepared to do our duty as such. Let us consider what the year 1917 has brought us. We have made marked advancement in athletics, dramatics and social functions. We have furnished two commissioners and several deputies as our share to Student Government. With such advancement and spirit, we intend to clasp the rope with all our might, and to be hailed into Seniorism with happiness and success. JI.PlLlI'I1b, TS. Soph. Stuff Successfully landed on the second round of the Educational Ladder, through untiring efforts, zeal and eagerness, and having outgrown some of the absurd and preposterous habits of Freshmen, we now proclaim ourselves Dignitied Sophomores. We rightfully claim students who are talented in Dramatics. Athletics, Amateur Play Writing, Scholarship, Debating and Music. We furnished two commissioners, military officers, a naval recruit, and the editor of the High School Notes. Most of our class have settled down to a specified course which will better concern their future. and as a united body will work and uphold the honor of The Yellow and the Bluef' VV. JI. Bartlett, '19. Freshman History The first Crescent night came and went. It was not nearly as bad as we thought it would be. The first event of importance was the tug of war 'between Freshmen and Sophomores. VVe won, conferring the first honors to our class. A few of our members have been interested in athletics. Fagan and Boam were members of this year's Basket Ball Team and were very popular. We were represented in Declamation by Marion Larkworthy, who won first honors in this district. Now we come to the end of this year's work. May we grow to sur- pass any other class in the History of the School. D. L. Kerzy, '20.
