NYe hope that we may have improved upon that first annual to some degree, though we realize that ours cannot be infallible, and that many more Crescent annuals must be published before a perfect one can be formed. There is an old story of a little page in the hall of a great Knight, who desired to prove himself worthy of knighthood. One evening, while pondering how he could best attain his desire. he heard a call afar off telling him to keep the compass needle of his soul true to the north star of his great arnbitionf' and that although his trials would be many, in the end he could not fail to succeed. He set out full of hope. but he did not realize how hard the road would be and how often he would be attacked by the monsters: discouragement and despair: but his steadfast purpose helped him to overcome these perils, and the day finally came when he could at last say, I have attained success. VVe, in producing this annual, have encountered many such perils, but it is not for us to say that we have succeeded. NYe leave that to your judgment, U reader, and hope that it will be a charitable one. Wie wish to thank the members of the faculty for their assistance: for whatever of good this annual may contain is due to their kindly encouragement, Uur gratitude should be given especially to Mr. Kelley. our Principal: for it was he who hrst proposed the idea of another annual, and who has spurred us on to achievement by his zeal and energy. lVe also wish to thank those who have contributed advertising, and all others who have helped us in any Way. To the classes which follow us we wish to express the hope that another five years will not be allowed to elapse before a number of the Crescent annual is published, but that the work will be continued. 8 5' ,. GZ , V fl 1 Ain 042 x , 13 r Valedictorian Aileen Napier, the valedictorian of the class of 1914, is a fine example of the success which may he accomplished by one who has constantly before her the very best motives and incentives which it is the purpose of education to iinpart. Her success and high standing as a student have been due primarily perhaps to industry. energy, and a pronounced sense of honor and recognition of duty. Because of these qualities as well as her natural winning personality, she is universally recognized by the members of her class as richly deserving of the honor conferred upon her. Salutatorian Genette Pixley, winner of second scholarship honors. and consequently the salutatorian of the class, is likewise worthy of the greatest commendatiou for the qualities of character which she has displayed as a scholar in the schools of St. Joseph. Her conscientious performance 0 duty, coupled with perhaps unusual powers of application, have resulted in the winning of this distinction. 14 f CELESTE LONDEEN Class Port, Lit. If such were our thoughts at the end of the tirst act of the plunior farce, on lfriday. May l, 1914, before the curtain went down on the last act, we had had many a good laugh with Tom and at Mr. XYycombe. Richard Crehore, as Tom Carter. Mrs. Grey's obliging brother, who takes the part of her absent negro servant upon the arrival of unexpected company. did acting worthy of commendation. Mrs. Grey lXN'ilhelmina Cransl was a very charming' hostess. The unexpected guests, Mr. and Mrs. XYycombe tMr. VVvcombe had a digestionl and niece, Dorothy Landon, took their parts ex- ceedingly well. Vivian Hutchinson as Mrs. lYycombe showed natural ability for dramatics. Harry johnson in the role of the old man caused many a laugh with his morbid fears of the disastrous effects of food upon his system. Ella Kerlikowski as niece Dorothy was a delightful and refreshing heroine for this little comedy. Hob Grey, the dashing' young' husband, was cleverly impersonated by Edson Groff. Mr. Landon fvlohn llenderl convincingly confirmed Mr. lVycombe's re- port that he was of a very peppery disposition. Minard Scott as the real Uncle Tom gave a line bit of character study. His negro humility and dialect brought us a breath from the old southland of plantation days. Last but not least did Qflicer Hogan appear. His rich Irish brogue gave proof of his ancestry. Few recognized in him their dignilied Principal, Mr. Kelley. ' Taken all in all. the farce was an achievement worthy of the class who, with Miss Kelble's assistance, had worked so diligently for success. 29 .- A i I., ..-5 , .1 5 Sig rip' . -4 ' ' l i l f 'll 2 m ie. le it rl lil ,K IK:-i V i , N xx Fl .il Ili, C: ': ,. ,I 1 3 7 -i l 1- f . l. -1 es, . .1 .l :s 4 - ' if ' 2 f Q. - 4 : .- 4. fi, M '-wif, i yl I I i .: I L.--v ' ki' if , ff f ' '- - Fieletfiefszllll ace ' W. 1 f ' ,F e . li I- ei-'5i2i'liil . 1 f , 1 ' it f F' y 251253351 l'3'7ll5i4zfi5:l 7' 4 1 f H fc.. .'i.i1 X lzililiiil ,f , i l .1ff.g..f f Q ' ,lx X ,zfisilsigzg rilisiczi f Q , ft 1 . i .1 f. I y 'C f Junior Farce of 1914 The ,lunior farce of the class of lfll-l, 'IX Modern .Xnanias. was presented to a packed house April, 1013. and was a great success in every way, each character acting his part to the hest of his ahility and displaying no little talent. The play has tu do with the fortunes of a young doctor, XYysander Lyon. who could easily give suggestions lo 1 lpie llildoclc. Ks a prevaricator, he stood without a peerfand the amusing situations, his fantastic handling of the truth created furnished much of the comedy of the piece. The part was taken by Robert l'ost, who did it excellently, and whose work was worthy of more than passing comment. .lane llarpstrite as Nellie lloldengate, the ward of l,ysander's uncle lliclc. displayed her real theatrical talent, and took the part to perfection. Genette l'ixley took the part of Prudence Nlayllower, the daughter of a chew- ing gum magnate and friend of Nellie. ,Xs lberhy llasliwood, the college chum of l,ysander. a youth with a monocle and an accent, Saffell -Iohnson did time work, and some of the hest acting in the play was done by Charles Simon as Colonel Lyon. the uncle of Lysander, and guardian of Nellie, Ronald llynlioop was hardly recognizable in the character of lkalny, the petite step-daughter of l.ysander. who inherited the 5250000 which l.ysanfler had fondly hoped to secure when he married the ancient widow who died soon afterward. Leonard Plee played the part of lirancisco, l-ysander's valet, and lilyde llrown w21S charming in the part of the muchfahused maid who suffered at the hands of the cyclonic llahy. Following the performance, an informal hop was given, which tinished an evening of pleasure. 30 1 f . . ' X S 'mx Z, y, my ff? A S v ' Wax? j1.. A very hne teacher they say. 40 I received a letter from Helen Habel the other day. She said she and Lois I-Ioag were down in Mexico and Florida with an evangelist party and were real happy and contented. WVell, I've told everything I know and must close and get supper, because Harry doesn't like to wait. Be sure and answer soon and tell me all about your trip. Your old friend, lXIII.DRI2D. I'. F-.elf you can't make this out, read Aileen Napiers new dictionary on American Slang-it's a hue help for all American people. I wish I could see her: I ClOY1'lI believe she has changed at all, ller letter sounds just like she used to talk. Here's another and a thick one, too. Wonder who wrote it. I-et's see! L'1Nc1NN.xT1, fill-IIO. Dear jane :- I just heard some wonderful news. and really must tell you all about it. ljob Post was awarded the Noble Prize for physicians because of his great work in lllexico wiping out the plague. I can't realize that he used to go to Old St. joe High with us, can you? He's quite young. too. Then I also heard that Hoddie Alford is president of the Pure lfood Inspection. I bet he makes a good one, don't you? Did you have a good time? I know you did. Ilerhaps you heard Mortimer Mitchell speak while in New York. They say, with a little more experience, he will be a second Ilooker T. XYashington. I can hear him now saying, To be or not to be. can't you? I went to a recital the other night and heard Roy Rlollhagen play. I'Ie is simply wonderful. Vyihen he saw me come in, he started to play Heres to the School and all Her Hosts, and it made me so lonesome for the old school again. Say, here's quite a shock for you: john Lessing is superintendent of the House of Correction! I nearly laughed myself sick when I heard that. and they say he is very strict, too. I can't imagine jinney at that job, can you? Do you remember the day Mr. Kelley nearly shook him to death? Guess he hardened his heart then and there and is taking his revenge now. Now jane, please let me hear from you. I am in Cincinnati now with mother studying music. I am coming back to St. joseph soon, and will surely call on you. NIARION Sroxia. F-he always could write fine letters. I hope this one is just as interesting: Luzerne. Switzerland. My Dear jane:- No doubt you will be surprised to see the heading on this letter, so I will tell you how I happen to be over here. You knew I was studying Domestic Art in Boston for three years and received a scholarship there. Then I studied here in Luzerne for a few months, and started on my work that was to be handed in at the International Exhibit. Now you won't faint when I tell you that I won the prize. My lace and embroidery was said to be the best. and I am so happy. I am going to hurry right back to Old St. joe and see all my old friends. 41 Now I have a lot to tell you about some of our classmates. You remember Kathryn McCrocken? lVell, she was studying art at the same school in Boston that I attended, There she met a foreign artist of high rank and when he re- turned to his home, she went with him as his wife. I got a letter from her not long after she left, and she said everything was fine. and that Erick Kerlikowski was poet-laureate of England. Did you know that Trecilla St. Clair has succeeded Lady Duff Gordon in her style shops? Yes, she is even more renowned than the famous Lucille. Do you remember the way Clyde Dohm used to talk in Civics about the Speaker of the House having entirely too much power? VVell, I guess he's changed his tune now, as he is holding that self-same office. If he can bluff the representatives as easily as he did Mr. Kelley, he will surely be successful. In connection with Civic Improvements tremember that topic?b, I want to tell you that Harold Colegrove is running for C. S. senator. Of course you will agree with me that he will be far ahead of Lorimer-I mean in good things. you know. The doorbell just rang, and who should walk in but I-Iarriet Snyder. She is over here studying music and looks ine. She sends her love to all the girls of 1914. I really must close now. I'll see you soon as I get back. but be sure and answer once more before I sail. Your friend. DOROTHY EIARROLD. My, I can remember how Dode always could sew and do fancy work: I'm awfully glad she received the award. I'm sure she deserved it. I- PHONE R1NGs AGAIN. Hello! Oh, yes: Genette again. No. I love to have you call up. Wfhat ?- a whirring noise over the roof? No, I'll listen and see if I can hear it. No, I can't-what is it? An aeroplane? VVho?--jack Thompson? XVell, he said he'd get to heaven, even if he had to walkg but these modern improvements have come to the rescue. No, I haven't read my papers yet. Vylhat about Leonard Plee? I-Iead of Mathematics Department at State University, and Emmons Sexton, superintendent of Agricultural College? Wfell, I knew St. joe High could turn out great men, didn't you? I forgot to tell you before that I received a letter from Cora Mae the other day. She and Charles Simons are married, you know, and are living out in San Francisco. I-Ie is the head of a large contracting firm there. VVho ?- Minnie Sommerfield? Yes. I remember. Married ?-well. I hope she's happy. llfe? I was just waiting for you to ask me that. lVhy, can't you guess? No? Then I won't tell you. Good-bye. JANE I-IARPSTRITE Class 1914. St. joseph High School. 42 Www, WNW. Societies and cluhs instituted by the students themselves have always accom- plished more than courses prescrilzed in routine. livery high school is in need of some organization in which the deliverance of ideas and thoughts may he made easily and without restraint. ln recognition of this fact, the class of lfll-l has instituted an organization which we hope will he lasting and will be strengthened by experience. lt is still in its infancy-a fact which adds much to the honor due our hoys, as they have to guide them: no model established hy visionary ancients. no constitutions and hy-laws drawn up hy illustrious dignitaries, no records made by matchless orators and far-seeing thinkers to impel them to supremacy. The work is new, the held unknown, the experience nil. Still, our hoys have made a record-not a record perhaps which could stand against any school, hut one to he proud of: they have made a firm foundation. Let those who are seniors next year add their influence to its growth and success. AILEEN NAPIER HOWARD ALF ORD Oratory and Declamation The work in oratory and declamation was most excellent. This was largely due to the fact that the entries this year were prompted solely by a thorough in- terest in the work. and had not entered men after weeks of coaxing and per- suasion from members of the faculty. The student body should realize 1'llOI'C and more, however, a truth which is universal in its application to all phases of school life, f. C., that we cannot expect to win along any line unless our con- testants have earned the right to represent the school. There must be an in- centive. Hut no one cares to exert himself if he can avoid it. ln many places it is the practice for some gifted speaker talthough the gift is oftentimes imag- inaryj to enter the lists, and others become discouraged so that no amount of coaxingg' can induce them to contest for the place. Ilut even under such cir- cumstances, the fact must eventually be proven that honors are given not for natural ability alone, but as a reward for ability won by a course of vigorous effort and training. Hur representatives this year were Edson Groff in declamationp who de- livered very effectively llay's Tribute to Mcliinleyf' The oration given by Mark llerring' was entitled. The hall was decorated with constalks, autumn leaves. and other foliage suggestive of the occasion, and the programs were of yellow, on which the figures of witches in black were stamped. Combs' Orchestra furnished the music. The Penevie Dance The Christmas dance given by the Penevies, a non-high school club, De- cember 22, 1913, at Burkhards Hall. was one of the prettiest affairs of the season. The decorations consisted of red and green holiday colors carried out by hanging baskets and wreaths. At one end of the room stood a miniature Christmas tree with small colored lights, and the piano was banked with ever- green interspersed with lights. lligbee and XVilson played the program of waltz, two-step. tango and hesitation. Junior-Senior Banquet of 1913 The banquet which the class of '1-l tendered the graduating class of '13 May 26, 1913, was a brilliant function which outclassed all previous affairs of like nature. Tables were laid in the beautiful dining-room of the Edgewater Club and decorated with red and white roses and carnations, carrying out the class colors of '14. After the serving of the delicious menu. the following toasts were responded to: . The Seniors-XYilliam XVynkoop. '13. The -luniorsm-Don XYynkoop, '1-l. Four tables for the four classes were laid in Burkhard's Hall, each of the classes striving to surpass the others in tastefulness of decoration. The Senior table occupied the center of the room and was artistically ar- ranged, the class colors of red and white and green foliage being used. A large wicker basket filled with maidenhair fern. red carnations, and white tulips, formed a centerpiece over which hung a large light encased in red, on which was shown the class numerals. Down the center were pots of white hvacinths and drop lights shaded in red and extending from the ceiling by ropes of fern, illuminated the table. The 'lunior class colors of yellow and blue were prettily carried out with golden tulips and daffodils. in pots wound with blue, and streamers of the colors were extended from the corners to the drop-lights at either end. A centerpiece of tulips was used, and favors of the same l-lowers were given. The Sophomore table in blue and white was beautiful with violets and white tulips. A rope of blue and white ran from the corners of the table to the drop- lights which were shaded with blue and white shades. XYhite tulips and hya- cinths and violets were placed down the center of the long table, and favors of tulips were given. The Freshmen, in spite of their lack of experience, carried out an elaborate idea in their colors of purple and gold. A large purple basket filled with yellow daffodils ran to the corners of the table. The lights were shaded in the colors and daffodils given as favors. The following toasts were responded to at the request of Erich lierlikowski, president of the society: Freshmen Roast-Aileen Napier, 'l-l. It has been the one society to bind the whole high school together and through which all have worked in one body. The constitution very concisely and clearly writ- ten. was drawn up by a most worthy committee in 1891, when the idea of such a society was Hrst conceived, The ideal aim of the institution is to develop dramatic, literary. and musical talent. NVe have been very fortunate to have secured splendid instructors in English who have shown us the dramatic and literary sides. and our critics of music have been especially good. The spirit of the Crescent Society is one of constant enthusiasm, which gives to each member a sense of his own importance and ability in an institution where the achievements of all are brought forth by united support and effort. Loyalty and enthusiasm have been the watchwords during the past year, and the result has shown forth in some of the best programs ever given. Several small plays have been presented this year under the direction of Miss Kelble, who deserves especial mention on account of her sincere endeavor and untiring effort to make this a brilliant year. llfe hope, in the future years, that the Crescent records may remain spot- less, and that each one will put forth his most noble effort to make this the best literary society in the state of Michigan. Even from the standpoint of losses and victories. however, the season was not entirely disastrous. the team winning exactly one-half of its games. Clf the eight games played, the last four were victories. When it was first proposed to reestablish the game, ominous advice was prevalent on every hand, the general tenor of which was distrust in the success of the venture, XYith characteristic school spirit. the student body rallied to its support, and within a week the team was appearing regularly on Edgewater field learning the rudiments of the game. Through the loyalty of individual citizens and business men, the team was provided with an excellent outfit of suits, which insured effective practice from the start. All sorts of discouraging circumstances were encountered at the start. though many had been foreseen and shrewdly provided by Coach XVhitehead. For instance, much criticism was indulged because the management had seen fit to oppose our young warriors with the best high school teams available. Before the season had progressed far, however. the wisdom of such a course had become evident, and was reflected in the wonderful development before the end of the season of a team which resembled a bunch of well-seasoned veterans to take the place of the inexperienced youngsters of the beginning of the sason. Too much cannot be said in praise of Coach Wfhitehead for our showing in the first year of football. ln spite of the loss of our games at the first of the season, football was a paying investment financially. Although our team had no gymnasium in which to practice and played in a cold hall, which in many other res-peets was extremely unattractive for devel- oping a championship team. yet it won a great many of its games, and in all of them displayed an aggressiveness and speed which was admirable. It requires some determination to play in a hall where the thermometer registers SO degrees or lower. But it takes more than cold to daunt the courage of a high school team backed by the spirit of St. joseph High School. Though the season brought defeat with success, the basketball team was admirable in spirit and represented the high school body ably and honorably. Coach NVhitehead issued a call for candidates to attend a practice, although the First team was practically picked, owing to the splendid, well-seasoned material. XVith this advantage and the early training, a fast, brainy team was developed. and gave us hope of a successful season. Our hopes began to shape themselves into realities when our team took vic- tory after victory. This success and the subsequent championship record was no doubt due to the loyal and incessant efforts of the coach, as well as the team which consisted of the following players: - Johnson lCapt.J Foltz Herring' Kneebus Dykstra Simons 64 1 Girls, Athletics The basketball team of 1913-14 has proved itself worthy of all the praise and com- mendation we can give it. The outlook from the beginning of the year has been quite favorable, as the team did not enter into the work wholly inexperienced. for the majority of last vear's team were to return and once more star for St. ,Toe High. The girls, under the splendid coaching of Miss Grier. worked constantly and con- scientiously in their practice and, as we know, were rewarded for their effort by the development of a speedy and unusually co-operative team, which won a hard-fought victory in each game played. Each member of the team worked loyallv for the honor of her school, and each met her opponent good naturedly. Six games were played this year. and a total score of 133 was piled up against 48 for their opponents. Not least among these was our old rival across the river, and as usual a great deal of enthusiasm was exhibited at the games played with them: and although the showing the First half of the last game with them was against us, the magniiicent Hpepl' of our girls won out. and Benton Harbor was added to their string. The CRESCENT here wishes to extend its thanks to Miss Grier for her effort in produ- cing so successful a team. LINE-UP Right Forward, . . . ...... GENETTE PIXLEY Left Forward... ...,..
