'W The Golden Year 1974-1975 Volume XII St. Joseph High School Conway, Arkansas This year found us, the students of St. Joseph High School, searching for many things. We searched for knowledge. We searched for friendship. We searched for understanding, but most important, we searched for ourselves. Our search was not always successful, and often it was a frustrating one, but it was not abandoned. 1975, our year of searching, rewarded us with good times, good friends and a record of our year so that in years to come we may look back and remember this search and be reminded of another search which we must never abandon either - the search for a better world for all mankind. Activities Pgs. 39-50 Pgs. 51-70 Favorites Athletics Pgs. 71-82 3 Dedication The Senior Class of 1975 proudly dedicates this yearbook to Mrs. Vallerie Hightower. Throughout our years at St. Joseph High School she has worked to preserve the ideals and principles on which a good education is based. Mrs. Hightower, a native of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas is presently working on her master's degree in English. She has shown her capabilities as a dis- tinguished leader in many areas. Among these are many hours of guidance and help as advisor of year- book staff. With her support and encouragement as our Junior Class sponsor, the year's activities proved to be a success. The willingness to tutor her students after school is another quality that is often over- looked . Mrs. Hightower, because you have given a pan of yourself to the students, you have become an inspi- ration to the school. We thank you. 4 Faculty. . . part o % or the opportunity to share s. , Rev. Juniors Go Where the Action Is The Junior class was really active this year. They had many fund-raising activities such as slouch days, sock- hops, car washes, and a talent show. Under the leadership of Mrs. Frank Opitz and Mrs. Roger Hightower, the Juniors have done a fine job of support- ing their school. Graduates, parents, and friends thor- oughly enjoyed the fine food served. The reading of the prophecy and class will brought both smiles and tears. This activity will be one of the cher- ished memories for the Seniors of 1975. What the Juniors say is the way it goes. 21 Sophomores. . . Searching for new friends Sophomores Enjoy Good Food and Fellowship The Sophomore class was working hard this year to put on their annual Valentine's Dance. In order for this to be as big of a success as it was. they held bake sales, a tupperware party, an Easter basket raffle, and a Sadie Hawkins Day and Dance. This was also successful, not only money wise, but the whole school participated in both day and night activi- ties. The cooperation that most members gave was tre- mendous and their spirit won for them the spirit stick at one of the pep rallies. They sponsored the Halloween Dance, which was a big success and enjoyed by many. Other activities included bake sales, a trip to the state capitol for the Civ- ics class, and a tour of the Post Office. Through these activities, this class was drawn closer together in learning to accept the responsibilities of growing up. Juniors Sponsor the Spring Formal The 1975 Spring Formal was held April 19, 1975, in the St. Joseph cafeteria. The theme was Country Roads in the Springtime, and the Juniors created a pleasant, country atmosphere by the use of two murals, a waterfall, a swing, and fresh flowers and trees. The decora- tions were beautiful and everyone truly enjoyed the biggest dance of the year. The Senior Play Project began in late September with the entire Senior class voting on a choice of play. Then, some brave Seniors volunteered to play on stage, to work on the set, on publicity, or on pro- grams. The play was presented on April 5 and 6, and was a great success. The entire class expresses gratitude to Sister Andrea and to Mrs. Kelly for directing this play with patience, encouraging words, and a touch if humor. Becky Nabholz was voted by the cast as best actress for her portrayal of Judy Meredith, a young sarcastic brat. May Crowning May Crowning was held Wednesday eve- ning, May 21. May Queen was Carolyn Nabholz and maids were Patricia Halter and Evelyn Kords- meier. Judy and Gwen Nabholz were train bearers. After the procession to the grotto, Queen Caro- lyn crowned the statue of Mary, while the maids and others pres- ent watched. The National Honor The National Honor Society is a group of students selected for their scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Each year the Honor Society sponsors the honor roll for each 9-weeks and the May Awards Assembly, keeps the school scrap- book, has a spring style show, and recognizes the senior honor gradu- ates at commencement. The Jim Banks award was pre- sented to Kenneth Schichtl. Pillows were given to the three' seniors from the Senior High Cheerlead- ers. It was one of the most memorable events of the school year. 1974-75 Yearbook Staff: from Left to Right: Lisa Hartje; Donna Kordsmeier; Charlotte Lachowsky; Margie Mayor; Becky Nabholz; Jane Moix. When work was begun on this yearbook, we had one goal in mind: To produce a unique yearbook, a memory book. We tried new ideas, hopefully better ideas, to capture the memorable moments of the 1974-75 school year. When again will there be the same classes, or the same faculty, flood drills or senior parades as we had this year? We hope that when you pick up this book in years to come, fond memories of St. Joseph High School will come back to you. It will be then that ice will have accomplished our goal. The Yearbook Staff 83 We Ma y Never Pass This Way Again. . . Graduation brought both tears and smiles to the Seniors of '75. The Juniors prepared a banquet which will long be remembered by the graduates. Parents and teachers, priests and Bishop McDonald were present. The awards were presented by Sister Jeanne. The Father Dellert Leadership Awards were presented to Larry Strack and Margie Mayor. Margie was also Valedictorian of the 1975 graduating class. Salutatorians were Charlotte Lachowsky and Kent Kordsmeier. We will never pass this way, again, but the memories we have will always be cherished in our hearts.
