'K JA ,N +2 Qs.. .Z ang pl: ,f 7f,3f,-to 3 4 43'-3 VARSITY FGOTBALL Boastlng one of the bnggest lanes In the state the Blue Jay eleven coached by Jery Sauve and Tom Paonessa were ready to begun on theur march to attaln flrst place In the Central Dlvlslon The season opened wnth a bang against Austin the Blue Jays routed them 207 Bull Young produced two of the TDs on sterling runs of 82 and 88 yards whule Jam Oleksnk provlded for the other TD by a 10 yard slant The Blue Jays moved to McCabe fleld next to take on the Cathedral Central Wlldcats The Blue Jays squad easily walked over the Wildcats again under the leader ship of Blll Young who uncorked runs of 27 and 66 yards Ted Derwa crashed 5 yards and Jlm Kollar picked up a loose fumble to 'aunt 45 yards In produclng the other two TDs Duck Sytek was again consistent In kicking three extra points whlle Jlm Olekslk plunged for the other P T A The frnal score was 28 6 De La Salle Field acted as host to the Blue Jays and Saleslan for our thnrd game of the year Saleslan offered relatively llttle opposltlon as the St Joe's squad ran to an easy vnctory and shutout, 250 St Joe's was now undefeated and they were to meet De La Salle next, who were also undefeated Thus game would be the the most Important of the season for lt would determine the wrnner of the tradmonal Onl Can and the winner of the Central Dlvuslon Champronshrp De La Salle Fleld was again host to the Blue Jays, but thus tlme we were the vnsmng club St Joe's hopes for an undefeated season came crashing down on thus nnght De La Salle played lnsplred football and as If that werent enough the Ol unlury IIHX fmally caught up wlth an undermanned Blue Jay team Early In the second quarter our only able bodied fullback Jim Olekslk was sndelnned with a shattered shoulder Flrst strlng end Lester Flynn played wnth hrs left knee encased In a brace Mike Ferrera offensive guard had hts shoulder ln a harness as did Celeste D1 Legge defenslve halfback Fnrst strung quarterback Gary Karam was out wuth a sprained ankle whale Paul Clarmutaro another defenslve speclallst also was hobbled by an ankle sprann The net result of such physical dlsabulltnes was a llmltlng of power which resulted rn De La Salle capztallzlng on these weaknesses Despute all of thus the Blue Jays held DLS to 77 tne at half tnme In the thnrd quarter, though, lack of depth began to take :ts toll as the mlury lust lengthened and the roster lessened A long run back of a punt, a recovered fumble resulted nn two touchdowns, enough to assure the Pnlots of the Oll Can for another year St Joe's has nothung to be ashamed of for they ended up ID second place Even La Salle recognlzed the gallant flght St Joe's put up, and we recelved our very best press notices of the year through a defeat Glven a break or two In the personnel department and the score easlly could have been reversed In the mean trme, desplte the lgnomlny of losung numerlcally, the Blue Jays can be proud of theur T956 football team ,...?
