Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. Editor-in-chief FRED PENAR Assistant Editor Production Manager Business Manager ROBERT CHIODINI ROBERT CALDWELL JOHN JOLY Advertising Manager Format Supervisor Sports RICHARD WROBLEWSKI PHILIP RINGO RICHARD O'BRIEN Typists LAWRENCE KULAK ROBERT GABRIDGE GERALD CHASE RICHARD CALDWELL Staff Assistants DAVID GOEBEL WILLIAM SEFCOVIC 2 FOREWORD The foundation for the success of the Arrow depends on the ability of the yearbook staff to capture vividly both in print and photog- raphy the enthusiastic spirit that has prevailed in the past four years. Surely without this endless enthu- siasm for all activities the happy moments that we have enjoyed would never have been. If you, the reader, are able to re-live these moments in the years to come while reading this book, then and only then will we have accomplished our task. The yearbook staff would like to extend a word of thanks to Brother Lewis, our principal, the members of the faculty and all those who have assisted Us in making this project a success. I A .5 I 1 I U I St. Joseph Parish was started in 1856 by a Redemptorist, Father Edward Q. sg . . s N,.,1.,.:-,Q of wcfmsft V Scenes at Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving at Centennial Upper left: Father Kaufmann, former pastor, precedes His Eminence to the Mass. Upper right: Standing room only. lower left and right: The procession to the Church. Just about everybody returned on Sunday, Sept. 30, 1956, to St. .loseph's Church, for the 100th birthday. lt's been a long time since 1,800 persons last crowded within its stately walls for any celebration. They came from all ages of life and all walks of society. Cardinal Mooney was there with the Venerable Msgr. Henry J. Kaufmann, a former pastor, as his assistant priest. The Mass was offered by the parish's ninth pastor, Fr. Arnold F. Schneider. Deacon and subdeaoon were Fr. Richard J. Dorr and Fr. Anthony J. Kaufmann, former members of the parish. Fr. Bernard N. Geller, a former assistant, gave the sermon. He traced from St. Joseph's parish the rise and growth of such parishes in Detroit as St. Elizabeth's, St. Anthony's, Nativity and St. Catherine's. He saw, too, the strong contribution the old parish had made to Catholic life in Detroit in her 13,328 baptisms, 2,9i7 marriages and 6,383 tunerals. Cardinai Mooney in his message 'of congratulations added to Fr. Geller's comments on the statistics of the parish, by saying that innumerable broken hearts had been mended by the long line of priests who had served in St. Josephs. in scanning the parish's future His Eminence asked the congregation to thank city officials for having cleared fheaway for a reiuvenation of the old parish. The recent leveling of blighted areas around St. Joseph's has made possible a new life for the parish. And His Eminence said he hoped that the new life that entered the cleared area would bring a new hope to the old parish, and eventually raise her to the proud stature she once held among the parishes of Detroit. f ,Q ,,,.. Clemens St. Mary St. Paul Grosse Pointe St. Michael St. Bernard Redford St. Mary Sacred Heart Notre Dame Holy Redeemer. Spectacular team balance again paid off for the Blue Jays as they successfully defended their Catholic Track Title at University of Detroit Stadium June 1. Scoring 'n twelve of thirteen events St. Joes caught and rolled over Orchard Lake St. Mary who made its bid in the Field events held the day before. The results show the necessity of real team work. We scored but three firsts in the running events and only one in the Field events but those important thirds and fourths broke the backs of La Salle and Orchard Lake in the final analysis. For the first time in St. Joseph track history the Blue Jays took first place in Lower Penisula State Class A Regionals after taking second place twice and third place once in previous years. St. Joes came first over De La Salle Highland Park Allen Park Lincoln Park Hamtramck Catholic Central Austin Taylor Center Wyandotte. By these and other victories St. Joes has been successful in maintaining their high ranking title of being superior in track. 98 5' 5 .T Qi x x mf -'Q .. ,, g . . , ' 1 5 .r 'Q' 8 If X , Y f Y J wf , jiqvf-4 'F Y'-I v fail-Q4 'Am' it M. ,, I V. ,gui 1, ..a,L'.T.'aa xv. id 1...
