High School seemed like a long and rocky road stretching far ahead, almost beyond our reach,St. Joe's caught usin its spell almost immediately. The man- liness, the spirit, all took our breath away, Brother Anthony J050Ph was principal at that time, with our present principal Brother Walter and Brother Conrad Stephen assisting him. Our homeroom teachers were: lA.-Brother Conrad Stephen,lB-Mr.Carney, 1C-Brother Stephen, ' 1D-Mr. Chevalier. Athletic-wise we had anything but a good year. We lost the oil can, 7-Og won only two basketball games all year: finished second in track, but did manage to take the baseball championship but then lost to Lourdes in Briggs Stadium. S SOPHOMORES, we became old hands at this thing called high school. Besides scorning the freshmen, we began tp take an active part in the school activities. Brother Joseph continued as principal, and Mr.Creedon took over as basketball coach. Second year teachers were: 2A-Brother Victor, 2B-Mr. Carney, 2C-Brother Dominic, 2D-Mr. Udell, Again we had a had athletic season. We lost the oil can, 13-65 won one game in basketball, lost our newly-won baseball championship, but man- aged to take home the track championship. Class of 55 E BEGAN giving the student council more and more trouble. As juniors, we decided we were as good as the seniors, but a few tickets sooncooled that idea down. Brother Walter became principal, and we were all saddened to see Brother Joseph leave, but Brother Walter soon established himself as a comparable director. Third year moder- ators were: 3A- Brother Dominic, 3B - Brother William, 3C - Brother Christopher, 3D-Brother Austin. We finally won the oil can, 6-0, and took the East Side infootball. Our basketball team won 12 and lost 5, going to Plymouth Regional finals. Our baseball team lost to St.Ladislaus after tieing for the championship, and our track team won again with Brother Christopher taking over from Brother James. E BECAME SENIORS at last, and that diploma didn't seem quite as far away now. Brother Walter continued to direct the school as principal. Our last-year teachers were: 4A- Brother Robert, 4B- Brother William, 4C-Brother Christopher, 4D-Brother Francis. We lost the oil can again, 32-0. Our basketball taam had a good but champ- lonshipless season. Sauve and Mr. Coccitti replaced Mr. Udell and and basketball coach respectively. ? Sze 7 7 fl el' T SEEMS like only yesterday when we seniors were just entering St. Joe's. The Panthers managed to score their only points by downing a blocked Blue and White punt in the endzone. This gave St. Joe's the Fleming Trophy for two years in a row. Marching to an impress- ive victory, St. Joseph trounced the St. Catherine eleven 32-6. Contributing to the Blue Jay's scoring spree were Sytek, Scrafano, Brezavar and Halkeyg the latter scoring twice. Sytek also got a safety as St. Joe won number three of the year. Scrafano scored once him- self and passed to Brezavar for another. Ending the season on a winning note, the Blue Jay Eleven downed St. Stanislaus 28-0. Standout of the game was Don Gheysens who caught a TD pass, re- covered a fumbled kickoff to set up another score and trapped a St. Stanislaus runner for a safety. Although original hopes for the championship were not quite met, the St. Joseph Eleven had a winn- ing C4-31 season. First row: R. Milo, A. Perna, K. Recor J- FOX,J. Kollar, W. This, however, was followed by four straight wins, St. Catherine, 60-285 St. Mary of Mt. Clemens, 53-38g St. Ladislaus, 56-273 and St. Anthony, 64-28. Unhappily all good things must come to an end and we lost a close one to Servite, 48-49, followed by a 44-55 loss to De La Salle. The Blue Jays soon bounced back, however, and crushed St. Ambrose, 51-35, and St. Catherine, 62-19. In the desperate race down to the wire, the Blue Jays steadily gained on the high-flying Pilots by beating St, Lad's, 48-39, and St. Anthony, 48-33. Hopes now ran high that there might be a play- off in which the Blue Jays could gain the East-side crown and a chan ce at the City Championship. With this goal in sight, St. Joe's downed Servite, 64-50, and De La Salle, 53-52. Although our last league game with St. Ambrose was an 81-68 win, the Pilots managed to. eke out the Championship by a slim one game mar- gin. The Blue Jays then took a trip across town only to lose 52-53 to Holy Redeemer. We closed the season by beating Servite 76-53 and St. Gregory 68-45. Our trip to the State Regional Games proved to be a one night stand as we lost 33-37 to Plymouth. The Christmas Dance second semester opened with a Valentine Dance. Finally the Senior Prom was held at Green- field Village. George 8: Sue. Music was supplied by bands composed mainly of our own students. These dances were held within the school, either in the gym or the cafeteria.
