We are determined, with the help of Godis graces to demonstrate our appreciation down through the years' by always being worthy sons of our most excellent mothers. Who shall find a valiant woman? A woman of prayer Clothed in strength and beauty Rendering good and not evil A woman who fears the Lord? A woman of principle Who has achieved by counsel of he Considered and acted with wisdom Has put herself to strong things? A woman of personality Caring for her own Stretching forth to the needy Giving in kindness and laughter and love? We have found her in you, Dear Lady, Queen of our school, r hands And to You we dedicate these pages. .3. Joseph's Big Story of Tourney By George Maskin Take nothing away Irom favored Highland Park . . . or un- beaten Lansing Sexton . . . or courageous Fordson's defending champions. But the BIG story of the State Class A high school basket- ball championships so far is being written by unheralded St. Joseph from Detroit's east side. In seven previous years as an A school, the Blue Jays never won in the state meet. Each time it was strictly a one shot and out deal for them. Not so this time. The Jays have emerged as the giant killers of the Plymouth regional. Two straight hair-raising victories, which easily could have given a lot of fans heart failure, have put St. Jo- seph in tomorrow night's final against Fordson. Come Back to Win The Blue Jays, again rated a nobody when the meet began, spotted Dearborn a 15-point lead Wednesday night and then came back to win, 47-45, on Gino Palia- roli's basket with 10 seconds to go. Last night's 35-34 conquest of St. Anthony truly was one for the books. The Jays trailed by a point and St. Anthony had the balL Fewer i...ii 1 Y P ' A i Muuam mznn. than five seconds remained. Then came the break. St. Anthony fumbled and lost the ball. It rolled over the St. Anthony back line and St. Joseph called time out. The timer announced one second remained. Each side mapped its strategy. St. Joseph had one play. Pass the ball high to six-six Norman Muller so he could take a bat at it and trust to luck the one-in- a-millioii effort would click. The assignment of passing the ball was given to Dick Rizer. St. Anthony, with its only tall player fouled out, put everybody around Muller, but none reached even to his shoulder. Time was whistled in. Rizer took the ball, tossed it high to- ward Muller, who batted it right through the hoop in the most stirring state tourney finish in many a day. It was Mu11er's only basket of' the night coupled with a free throw. 3. ll I 4 I 1 ln' N ni, pl l 1' 'i 1 1: ll Sl. Anthony led St. Joseph, 34 to 33. with one second left. After a. timeout Si. Joseph put the hall in play under its own hasket. The hall was thrown high in Mini-X standing at one side and the six-foot-six St. Joseph center, guarded by three, players, hatted it through the hoop as the game ended. ,Y - 4' f.,,' A gb Q rl Yi' Titlists Lead All the Way: Tractors Down Jays For Regional Banner Fordson's 1953 state champs hopped another hurdle in its battle to repeat by beating Detroit St. Joseph, 60-51, Saturday night to cop the Class A regional basketball crown at Plymouth Although never trailing, scare from St. Joseph. the Cin- derella team' of the meet which previously had scored two upsets, when the Blue Jays pulled within five points of a tie late in the fourth period. But the loss of star Tom Goed- deke with 2:06 left to go disrupted the Jays' comeback and Fordson triumphed going away. The Tractors took an 18-0 lead in the first period, led 30-18 at the half and 46-37 after three periods. He did an even better job on them last night be- fore 6-foot-6 Norm Muller tapped the ball through the rim with one second left and St. Joseph conquered St. Anthony, 35-34. The loser was the Parochial Leagues East Side First Divi- sion champion. St, Anthony led. 34-33, when St. Joseph called time out to stop the clock. Muller took a pass out when play was resumed and sank it as the game ended. Tom Goeddeke, of St. Joseph, and Tony Stefani, St, Anthony, each scored 12 points. St. Joseph meets Fordson's state champions for the regional crown tomorrow night at 8. Ford- son put out Catholic Central, 54- 49, after the game was tied, 32-32, at the end of the third quarter. Electric power serves so faithfully we just take it for granted. Edison's incandescent lamp, heralding the birth of modern electric service, finally became more than a dream 75 years ago. To help turn this dream into reality. other men provided the finances Edison needed. Their joint achievement is an example of how financial risk-taking and individual ingenuity combine to the benefit of all people. But our present way of living is only the beginning. Electricity promises for the future still greater marvels and better service. It requires men and women with many skills to provide this service.
