A l A , TH12 ANXUNCIATA FRESHMAN CLASS The power of Clreumstance HE night air was cool-much cooler than is customary for a late June evening and for a circus night. The fresh breezes and the bright stars seemed out of tune with the gaudy brightness of the traveling show. The night, however, was not the only thing out of tune with its surroundings. In a small dressing tent outside the big top-and seeming even smaller in comparison- sat Paul Bently, the Clown. Odd, how cool it was! Odd, how strange he felt! Odd-and ironic, too, that he should be in this spot, the very place of his boyhood! He, the Clown, the fool, the jester! Xvho could suspect? Odd, what had prompted him, a seasoned trooper, to forfeit his act in favor of one of less talent and ability! Never before had the circus seemed such a mockery-such a gaudy unreality! Wfith an impatient gesture he stalked out of the tent. Circling about to escape the glare of the circus lights, Bently stepped into the cool darkness beyond. Distracted, he wandered aimlessly about the dark streets for an hour or more. Suddenly an errant Calf, brushing against him in the shadows, brought him back, with a start to his surroundings.
