Pm xll, Apoufle of Peace Blessed are the Peacemakers . . .U Their fruits shall not be in vain when they labor for the love of God. When, on March 3, 1939, Eugenio Pacelli became Pius XII, he assumed the burden of the whole Catholic World, and as successor to Pope Pius Xl, he pledged himself to the worthy cause of peace. Since then, his ceaseless and untiring efforts in behalf of peace have brought him the respect and admiration of a war-torn world. ln an Easter message to the whole world, the Apostle of Peace aslced redoubled prayers for world peace: Let us pray for universal peace: not for peace based upon the oppres- sion and destruction of peoples, but peace which, while guaranteeing the honor of all nations, will satisfy their vital needs and insure the legitimate rights of all. Thus we see the Peacemaker reborn in His Vicar, seelcing eternal peace but never once forsalcing justice in his quest of it. His pleas to his people, for all are his people, have always been tempered with love of mankind, and the conviction that Peace will be restored to the world through the prayers of its peoples, and the grace of God. mln this tempest of misfortunes and perils, of afllictions and fears, our most powerful and safest haven of trust and peace is found in prayer to God, in Whose hands rests not only the destiny of men but also the out- come ol their most obdurate dissensionsf' As our beloved Pontiff has pointed out, he has waged his battle with but one weapon-truth-and he has but one defense-prayer. Such weapons can never know defeat, though long and bitter the struggle in which they are employed. With the help ol God, Pope Pius XII will succeed in restoring peace to a battered and bleeding world: peace of heart, peace of mind, and the peace of soul that comes only from union with God, and belief in His all-healing power.
