When, on March 3, 1939, Eugenio Pacelli became Pius XII, he assumed the burden of the whole Catholic World, and as successor to Pope Pius Xl, he pledged himself to the worthy cause of peace. Since then, his ceaseless and untiring efforts in behalf of peace have brought him the respect and admiration of a war-torn world. ln an Easter message to the whole world, the Apostle of Peace aslced redoubled prayers for world peace: Let us pray for universal peace: not for peace based upon the oppres- sion and destruction of peoples, but peace which, while guaranteeing the honor of all nations, will satisfy their vital needs and insure the legitimate rights of all. Thus we see the Peacemaker reborn in His Vicar, seelcing eternal peace but never once forsalcing justice in his quest of it. His pleas to his people, for all are his people, have always been tempered with love of mankind, and the conviction that Peace will be restored to the world through the prayers of its peoples, and the grace of God. mln this tempest of misfortunes and perils, of afllictions and fears, our most powerful and safest haven of trust and peace is found in prayer to God, in Whose hands rests not only the destiny of men but also the out- come ol their most obdurate dissensionsf' As our beloved Pontiff has pointed out, he has waged his battle with but one weapon-truth-and he has but one defense-prayer. Such weapons can never know defeat, though long and bitter the struggle in which they are employed. With the help ol God, Pope Pius XII will succeed in restoring peace to a battered and bleeding world: peace of heart, peace of mind, and the peace of soul that comes only from union with God, and belief in His all-healing power. NIULLUX Bishop of Hroofelyn i-.fzs.......-,....,-fz.z.4.1... ff They are endowed with certain inalienable rights, life, liberty and the pur- suit of happiness. Democracy includes liberty. Our liberties are freedom of speech, freedom of worship and freedom of assembly. Today we face a threat to democracy. Are we as Americans, going to sit back while every vestige of freedom is stolen from us? Are we going to allow the government that was established of the people, for the people and by the people .to perish from the earth? Let us recognize this truth so that it may be allocated -to win our support. Democracy is at the crossroadf' ln Europe it has swerved to the left of the .totalitarian state represented by Communism and Fascism. There is little differ- ence between the two. Both have taken away individual freedom of thought, word and action: both regard the state as supreme and both feel that the people exist only for the good of the state. ln Europe too, the will of the majority has talcen liberty from the will of the minority. But in the United States, liberty has a more secure source, a source that includes the minority as well as the majority: a source that finds its stability in the unchangeable will of God. Throughout our high school careers our studies have not led us to despair of democracy, but rather to question the solidity of modern dictatorship. Democ- racy thrives on peace: dictatorships thrive on war. Democracies are recognized by liberty and equality, dictatorships are recognized by stern discipline and absolute intolerance. Therefore the crisis of democracy today is the crisis of world peace. Education is indispensable to a democratic government. We, consequently, wish to express our gratitudeg for throughout the past four years, having been thor- oughly equipped with a knowledge of our government, and the business of its various departments, there can be no doubt that in the future, we will become good citizens and be able to defend our government. The seed of education has been planted and through our effort, it is expected to yield a good harvest. My dear fellow graduates, may I presume to predict our futures in this world of turmoil? As l gaze upon the road that leads ultimately to the goal we are seeking, let me depict it as smooth and rough with many turnings that may lead us astray. But, in our travels let us not forget the teachings of our Alma Mater who taught us to reach out to the shining light of the future that lies just beyond. and by so doing remain close to the Heart of our Divine Creator. Thus our greatest future reward and career will be eternal happiness with Him forever. in conclusion, may I say, Let us live by truth and not by lies so that we may not prop the tottering house of wrong that is recognized by legalized cruelty and force: but rather, that we may bind our commonwealth in the love of its citizens. Democracy is a child of peace, and cannot live apart from its mother. i-KATHLEEN M. COGHLAN '41 True MUST Rxsvz-im-Lxn Rmmomn fXLfGL's'1'1NH Kmnmmy D.D Tilufur Bishop of Lysiniu Auxifiury Bishop of Brooklyn 74MuZ'e la 7fze ljafamenifim Through the foresight, generosity and kindness of the noted Parmentier family who bequeathed to the Sisters of St. Joseph, our Faculty, their beautiful mansion and garden on Bridge Street, we have been blessed with the happiness of a suc- cesslul business training in our present St. Joseph Commercial High School, known as uparmentier Memorial.,' It seems only fitting that we, the graduates of 1041, should offer a tribute to the memory ol those great promoters ol Catholic Action and pioneers ol social service, the Parmentier Family. Andre Parmentier was born in Belgium in 1780 and in 1815. married Sylvia Parmentier. They came to New York and Brooklyn in 1824. While here, both labored zealously for the missionaries who at this time had to meet with almost unconquerable obstacles and hardships. During these dark days, there were a lew brilliant leaders who served as beacon lights, among whom the most illuminating was Madame Sylvia Parmentier. By her moral and material aid she proved a great stimulus to those noble souls who endeavored to plant the seeds oi Christen- dom on the rough and rocky shores of the United States. Bishop Du Bois was an ever welcomed guest at the home ol the Parmentiers on Bridge Street and his room was preserved almost as he left it in 1839, up to the death ol the last member oi the family in 1908. Father Edwin Sorlin, C.S.C. founder of Notre Dame University also enjoyed the hospitality of the Parmentier home. Rev. Peter De Smet, the Jesuit- missionary who labored with unceasing patience among the indians, was also a recipient of Madam Sylvia's kindness. But the Parmentier charity did not end here. lt encompassed that noble band ol missionaries, the Little Sisters oi the Poor, in the United States. ln fact. Father Lelievre with Mrs. Sylvia's son-in-law, Edward Bayer, rented the first little Home for these Sisters, even before they had arrived in the country. This residence was on DeKalb and Bushwick Avenues. Madame Parmentier accom- panied these little Sisters on their tours of collection until they were acquainted with the city and the customs. Madame Parmentier gave unlimited assistance to the Sisters oi Providence. ln reality she was the co-loundress of the Order. It was through the uniailing generosity of Madame Parmentier that the community was provided for and grad- ually grew in size until today, St. Mary of the Woods, conducted by the Sisters of Providence, is recognized as one of the foremost educational institutions in the country. In the parlor of the mother house is a life-size portrait of Mother Theo- dore, founder, and beside it one of Madame Parmentier, co-loundress, a lasting tribute oi homage to their efforts and accomplishments in founding the Sisters ol Providence. Another great work ol Madame Parmentier was the organization ol a taber- nacle society oi pious women who made vestments and altar linens and distributed them to poor missions worthy oi such charity. Madame Sylvia did much to help the struggling little Church ol St. James on Jay Street, Brooklyn, and her family was among the first to help in organizing St. Pauls parish on Court Street. Truly, no missionary was permitted to pass the Parmentier residence without first partalking oi aid in some form to sustain them in their noble work. Madame Parmentier also founded many Conlraternities, among which the Holy Childhood was the most outstanding and widely known. When Madame Parmentier passed away her encomium was summed up in these words, Her life was saintly: her works, those of a saint. -DOROTHY L. During this time they have been re-arming and preparing themselves to meet the on- slaughts ol luture lille. Now they are ready. It will be no easy taslc to leave a sale Catholic atmosphere to enter what can readily be called a dream world. It is something imagined, but not yet experienced -- an entirely new chapter in their life. The modern world is in a turmoil. For that reason it offers few oppor- tunities to those not prepared to deal with its ways. One must not only possess secretarial ability to solve successfully. business propositions but must have strength ol character and purpose as well. The business lile is by no means, a lille ol glory. It is rather one ot' continual struggle, perplex- ing problems, and puzzling ways. The young lady then, who enters the business world must be prepared to meet all three. This preparation comes from a good Christian education: one which teaches her to meet every situation bravely and cope with it to the best of her ability. She has been well trained: she is intelligent and capable. Vvith these characteristics, hall the battle is won. The other half is won by common sense- the fruit ot spiritual and moral activity. Thus we learn, success will be hers only, il she prays to Nlary, our Advocate, and our dear patron, St. Joseph, to intercede lor us with Him from Whom all success comes. Let the words Ulte Ad Josephn he our beacon light to lead us on to victory in the great battle of lile. ,-flVlARGARET CARNEY '41 61644 P Silling, Lvfl: T. Fcnnf-sscy, T. Coyle. Slamling: K. Guefdffd Four short years ago, with a freshman's dream of a fruitful harvest to be reaped through a labyrinth of intricate business methods interspersed with all the joys ol a high school life, we entered the portals ol St. Josephs The scene upon which you gaze this evening is one which we have long envisioned. We, the Class of January 1941, are indeed honored in having such a large gathering of friends here to help in the launching of our careers on the vast sea of life. It is then with a joyous heart that I, in the name of my class, extend to you all, a most cordial and gracious welcome. Beloved parents, our expression of gratitude to you will be in the form of a prayer of thanksgiving to God, the Father, in Heaven who has given us such loving, patient, self-sacrificing guardians of our destiny. You have watched us grow from earliest infancy to the present emergence of a fully developed character physically, morally, intellectually and spiritually prepared for life's combat. Your sacrilices and sorrows have made this occasion for us the brightest moment of our young lives. These years of self-denial we lay as a rosary of llowers at the feet of our Heavenly Mother to glzfer to her Son as a gilt of love from you. May God grant that you will remain with us for many years, to enjoy the fruits of your labors and the realization of our ambitions. The love and appreciation which we have expressed to our parents is in no way diminished in respect to you, our dearly revered members of the faculty. The gratitude we feel toward you is one of a boundless nature. Your patience and understanding will long be remembered especially in the long or short span of our business life. When we shall commit one of lile's errors we shall no longer have any forgiving teachers to make allowances for our short-comings. Your high ideals will be engraved in our minds and will serve as our beacons in our future careers. Dear classmates, the world we now enter is one filled with complexities of which we have never dreamed. Probably like the youth of generations past, we shall set out to conquer them. Whether we do or not, one thing we shall strive earnestly to do. We shall try to succeed in our present desired aims and purposes. Our aims, we must agree are quite high, but justly so. For our paramount dreams will never become realities unless we strive for ideals a plane higher than the average. Our first aim, that of securing a position, will be a hinge on the door that will swing open to advancement in later life. It is here that we must show our spirit of co-operation, our ingeniousness in our relations with others and our effi- ciency in the worlc which will be required of us. The fulfillment of all our aims will be most assured if we keep ever before our eyes the spirit of prayer and work so beautifully inspired by our beloved St. Joseph, patron of our Alma Mater. Again, dear friends, may I express on behalf of my fellow graduates, deep appreciation for your presence here this evening and the hope that this spectacle will ever remain in your minds as an expression of love and devotion to all who have in any way made possible this memorable event in our lives. -VIRGINIA Dovuz '41 ,, . ,Hy Y, . ,, 1, 'ww 1 5 fu V 'Iv ,?'f'l!fQL 7fA1.f Q ' Z I A gf Yugi ! O O C When a master crallsman lays down his tools at last and says lt is done. it is with a leeling ot deep regret that he sees the fruit ot his labor passed to the world to be tried. So, we believe, St. Joseph must tcel to see his children enter the business world to be tried, tested and approved. The theme of his workmanship was the development in his subject of a strong sense of loyalty to duty. It is most essential that we young graduates going forth into the world should ever have belore our eyes this ideal, it we ever wish to attain happiness in this lite and the lite to come. Nothing is impossible to those whose guide is duty. So nigh is grandeur to our dust, So near is God to man, When duty whispers low Thou must , The youth replies 1 can . f- EMERSON Duty can, to many. become an unbearable burden or a joylul incentive to greater things. To us, it can only be one: tor joy is never n burden. We have been trained throughout our high school years to embrace duty as a guide on the road to success. A person without duty is like a llower without the sun, lor neither has much motive lor living. At this moment, we are preparing to enter a world where duty plays a very prominent part and wc are contident that our training will carry us through, to ultimate victory. Through the untiring efforts ot our beloved teachers we have come to that phase ot lite where we look forward to our incumbent duties us a means of attaining our place in this pattern ot lite. The old lite is behind us. and now we look forward with eagerness to a new one where duty is the chief stepping stone, Not only to ourselves do we owe the duty ot striving for success in whatever Field we have chosen tor our vocation, but to our parents we owe the fruits and enjoyment ot our achievements. Many may choose to become secretaries: some perhaps will enter other commercial lields ot business: and a chosen few may be called to the higher life. Whatever their ambition, each has her special duty relative to her choice, and her true success will depend in large measure on the extent to which she tullzills those duties. We are achieving our external salvation by recognizing and fullilling our duty to God, our country and our neighbor. The great poet Milton has said that a complete and generous education is that which tits a man to perlhorm justly, skiltully and magnanimously all the atztairs both private and public ot peace and war. Our education then has been complete and generous, tor our spiritual lite has been ted with the truits ot the Holy Ghost. and the grace of his gilts, while our intellectual lite has blossomed forth under the guidance ot our reverend Faculty. St. Joseph, too. has inspired in us a great devotion to duty, and a just performance ol ull our tasks. To our parents we owe our sincerest gratitude and our greatest loyalty. From experience. they knew that the foundation ot a lull successtul lite is laid in our formative school years and our future success would largely depend upon our past training. They have spent unsparingly ot their lives, their fortunes and their happiness. to give us the best that lite can olzter. To them we cannot say we are grateful, it is not enough. We can only hope that our future lite, the success we attain, the pure joy we bring them will in a very small measure repay the trust they have placed in us. Their sacrifices are written in love, deep in our hearts. To our dear teachers, the members ot the Faculty, we leave the hope that their work will continue to be fruitful. Through their kind labor we have acquired the knowledge necessary for a successtul pursuit ot the bubble ot success. Their deeds will never be forgotten by the Class ot 1941, and we shall always hold a special hallowed spot in our hearts for them. No tribute seems worthy enough, so we simply say -.GDII Bless YOILU Dear fellow Graduates : Tonight we enter upon a new order. No longer will our daily actions he guided by our teachers. But hereafter, we ourselves must distinguish between right and wrong. One ot the greatest philosophers ot our times, Monsignor Fulton Sheen once asked, Hvvhat is the purpose ol living? it lille has no other goal than dust, then it is built upon selfishness. But it lite is moral, and the way we live determines our existence in the next world, our lite is right. So let us graduates try to preserve the ideals carved out by Saint Joseph. so that when we lay down our lives, we may close our eyes saying, We have seen our duty and we have done it. We have observed the motto 'lte Ad Joseph, and we have followed him up-Up to God! -1 LILLIAN KEARNS I w fp, 0 :Md .flfljligfl I . ,ffl 5' ai -7 'W '41, I W1 . ,, I f'3 j!- ' , .-.':.-1'-. Filled with zeal and love ot God, they opened the portals ot the Catholic Church to all who might wish to come. Since that time, bishops and priests have labored, sutfered, sacriliced and even died to bring souls to Christ. VVe Crusaders whom you see before you, pray, study and sacrilice lor those who have been appointed by God Uto teach all nationsu. Our part is simple but we must play it faithfully. We have but to bring in from our respective homes the little things-stamps, tinioil, magazines and other articles which in turn enable our priests to perlqorm the hard worlcs ol converting and caring tor the souls of Christ's lambs. We can. it only we will be the instruments, the medium through which the world might be brought into one told under the one Divine Shepherd. It is, therefore, a moral and spiritual obligation on our part to assist in this great worlc. Prayer, Worlc and sacrilice are the three great means lor securing success in this crusade. Through our study of the magazines and periodicals collected lor distributions we learn ol great deeds to be done tor Christ. The slightest etlort on our parts may be as balm to the open sores of the leper- as tood in the mouth ol a starving Chinese child. A reunion dinner ior the class of 1941 is in progress at the Casa Del lVler. As reporter for the Social Column oi the Windy Vvindlassn, i have been sent to cover the affair. Here come the tirst of the guests. They are Marie Hunt and Helen Koslowski - two young ladies who have achieved fame as pianists but in different manners. Marie plays in a swing band and Helen specializes in concerts. Esther Krauss has also made an appearance, and the magazine she carries has a large display ol the recent portrait paintings she has exhibited in the Museum oi Art. ln the midst of a large group we find Helen Casey and Niary Jane O'Connor. These lashion experts certainly prove that they justify the praise they have received of late. l received word that Arlene Settani, Marguerite Fleck and Mary Brideson are unable to attend the reunion, for as Certilied Public Accountants they have con- quered the business world and are kept quite busy. I pause now to view the arrangement of the dinner itself. it was prepared by that caterer, Jeanette Romano, who lirst became interested in food when she took the lunch order during her four years at school. Now that the party has made some progress, l can see Dorothy Virgil and Marie McNamara showing a lew oi the girls the latest dance steps, Their dancing school is well known and it seems that Dot and Marie cannot get away from work even on this day. Eleanor Strand has also climbed the ladder oi lame for when Eleanor Powell retired, our own Eleanor became the new Queen of Taps. Dorothy MacDonald has refused to eat because she is scheduled to give an exhibition on roller skates this evening at Madison Square Garden. Of course, you have seen her picture in the paper and know that she is the Vvoman Champion Skater oi' New York. Nurses, Theresa Fennessey and Mary Meehan are engaged in conversation and as l pass, Mary Coyle interrupts them to ask, VVho said the Dodgers won't win the Pennant? Mademoiselle Hennessy is surrounded by a group who are seeking her advice about cosmetics. We knew her as Elinore, but opening her beauty salon necessitated a change of name. Several oi the other girls have changed their names also. Grace McDonald, Dorothy Sepe and Margaret Carney have wed and abandoned their former careers as secretaries. Clara Loriz entertaining us by singing the latest South American songs brought back memories of such hits as Frenesi , Amapola , and uperfidian, which were made prominent by Clara way back in 1941. It is quite late and if I expect to get my copy into the hands ot the editor of my paper, Lillian Kearns, l must leave. The only regret is that so many of my iormer classmates could not attend the reunion. The taking care of children delayed them. - HELEN THOMAS '41 1' - --ie- Gm .fidaafuf The iriendly atmosphere that iills our lihrary has reached out to us with open arms and drawn us into its happy surroundings many times during the past tour years. On the whole our library has taught us just what to expect from the world and how to deal with the diiiicuities and disappointments which will lueset our path while traveling along iilieis highway. Vve. the class ot lQ4l, have spent many happy moments during the course old our school term at St. Josephis, within the portals ot our iilorary, and it is with deep reluctance and a touch ot sadness indeed that we leave these cherished haunts. Truly may we say that we shall always treasure its memory and it wiii ever remain as one oi our most prized and priceless memoirs tor ali time. - DORIJTHX' SHPE '-il Sadaa Mwmiea Four years ago, seventy-six starry-eyed students entered the portals of St. Joseph and started on the road to becoming able business secretaries. Certainly in all their expectations they could not foresee the joys and sorrows they would experience as Freshmen, namely, making new friends: receiving report cards: the happiness at becoming acquainted with beloved Sisters, and the ineffable joy of becoming Sophomores. A step higher in the ladder of education, and the theme be ladiesng the sorrow of leaving childhood behind forever with the realization of budding woman- hoodg the joy of their new position in life as Sophisticated Sophomoresng the thrill of knowing that they are growing in wisdom and knowledge under the tender guidance of their teachers. And then, Juniorsl Still higher they climb, and they are Juniors with all the responsibilities en- tailed. Then suddenly a new purpose enters their life. A school club, with all the joys and happiness that comes from united efforts for the cause of God. Excited dis- cussions, addresses to the students, socials, tea parties. Suddenly they Find them- selves at the top, loolcing back at the years. As Seniors, their joy is limitless. Even Regents cannot dim their glow. They are all important. In their hustle and bustle of preparations for Commencement honors they find time to send Marie Ryan to represent them as Co-Borough Presi- dent in Boys and Girls Week Contest. Endless practices: posing for photographersg measuring for rings, caps and gowns: parties: last get-together, and finally, Com- mencement, and the Senior Year Book. With a sad heart. they leave forever the portals they entered so gaily but four short years ago. They carry with them the determination to bring honor and glory to the dear school through whose doors they have passed to enter the great business World. -- LILLIAN KEARNS '41 Jlanaaaay Pahowi af elm aj mmm-4Mz,,-0m MOST REVEREND THOMAS EDMUND MOLLOY, S.T.D.
