Edward Dempsey. Our Lady has taken us by the heart and shown us the way, just as Father Dempsey had taken our minds and intellects and molded them into good Catholic tools of Our Divine Lord. FOREWORD We present our 1959 edition of the Palladium reflecting something of our life during our years at S. J. A. - with the hope that it will be an inspiration to our readers, and a reminder for ourselves to live up to the high ideals of our Alma Mater. We as Seniors are picking up our swords and starting to fight an endless battle, a battle against the godless world of today. Godless because there are so many things and beings which are against our Divine Creator. We as Students have been taught to love, honor and to serve God. We shall do all these things by picking up our swords and fight for what we firmly believe. We will have a great and difficult task ahead of us. But we feel that God will give us the grace to persevere to the end. So Forward Christian Soldiers and may God ever be with us. Amen. HIS EXCELLENCY our Beloved Bishop and Fetherly Guide To our beloved Bishop, the Most Reverend John J. Carberry, Ph. D., S. T. D., J. C. D. of the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana, we offer our affectionate tribute of loyalty and gratitude. Page 5 Page 6 I N M E M O R I A M His Holiness Pope Pius XII Called to his eternal rest October 8, 1958 God, who in Thy transcendent providence wast pleased to cause thy servant, Eugenio Pacelli, to be numbered among the supreme pontiffs, we pray Thee to admit him, who on earth was vicar of Thy only-begotten Son, into the company of Thy holy pontiffs now and for evermore: through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who is God and liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, world without end. Amen. WE HAVE LOVED THEM IN LIFE The Reverend Edward R. Dempsey Chaplain, January 6, 1955 to January 27, 1959 Through you dear Lady, we the students and faculty of Saint Joseph Academy, commend the soul of our beloved chaplain, Father Dempsey, to your Divine Son. It is very fitting and proper that we do this, for here upon earth his life was that of your Son, the Good Shepherd, caring for the needs of His assigned flock in total surrender to the will of God through his deep filial devotion to you, His Mother. Planting in our minds the seed of knowledge of our religion, Father was always on hand to supply the spiritual food needed to help it grow into a deep-rooted way of life. It is in thanksgiving to God for His priests, and in particular for His loving care in sending us such a devoted, undersatnding, and priestly priest that we again ask you, Our Lady, to tuck our beloved Father Dempsey deep within the folds of your mantle of love and present him to the Eternal Judge. Requiescat in Pace. Page 7 Page 8 LET US NOT FORGET THEM IN DEATH Sister M. Katharine and Sister Antonia, both of whom were long outstanding teachers at St. Joseph's passed to their eternal rewards this school year. Sister Katharine died early in the morn- ing of Palm Sunday, March 22. Sister Antonia died on November 5. Sister Katharine came from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, on December 8, 1892 to enter St. Joseph's Qwhich at that time was on Mill Street in Tiptonl. She received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the following April. The next sixty years Sister M. Katharine Sister spent teaching at the Academy, and in schools in Elwood, Kokomo, and Marion. She was an interesting and challenging teacher, and many a former student owes much to her inspiration. Since 1952, Sister Katharine had been retired from active duty and been in Mercy Hospital, Elwood, and Good Samaritan Home, Kokomo. Sister Antonia entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on December 28, 1907. She, too, taught at the Academy and in several parish schools. She was an artist and a musician, and an outstanding educator. Sister had been in poor health for a long time, but had been active until a few months before her death. Sister Frances also entered into her eternal reward on May 2. . -H T 'cl ' 4! 1, . .QQ if v 311 'Y ww! ...-- ,.4 f ' ,f , A ,, . . .. Here Suzanne Clouser, Janice Taylor, Karen Merkel, and .Ioan Mark are reminded of their talent and patience in carving very detailed scenes for various types of decoration. The beautiful teak wood chest, which the girls are admiring, came from Hong Kong in 1940. It shows several phases of Chinese life in motion: a typical characteristic of Chinese art. The three dimensional quality of the carving on the chest places before you the pagan priests making their offerings: and along side, the man with the job of catching fish for his living. In great awe, we wonder how the fingers of man could fashion such a masterpiece. The ob- vious intent of the biologist is to study the life of bodily things - plants, animals, men - or the life of organisms. But the concept of life pertains to realities beyond the scope of biology. Theology tells us of the life of angels. Reason discloses to us the existence of a living God, and at the same time the fact that He is in no sense material. God's perfections are mirrored in His creatures, as every effect reflects something of the cause that produced it. The life of corporeal beings, marvelous in itself, is but a distant reflection of Infinite Life. Almost 400,000 species of plants and animals are something to amaze and bewilder the mind. How much more sublime must be the Life of Him who gives life to them all! Left to Right: Claudia Mellon, Jill Cain, Martha Walsh, Pat Ewing, Virginia Cyr. T9 CHEMISTRY The study of Chemistry in this Atomic Age has become a science of great importance to today's high school students. Here at S. J. A., they are taught the fundamental principles of this growing science, as well as given a practical picture of the science and its many applications in our every day lives. In the life of a secretary, Shorthand and Typing are essential factors because it imposes on one a tremendous burden of note taking and then translating. The students strive to acquire accuracy and a high rate of speed in both of these subjects. It is only when they have a full under- standing of them that the mind can urge the hand to perform instantly. This page is sponsored by COCA- COLA BOTTLING COMPANY, Elwood, Indiana s You do not have to go into the business world in order to use these skills successfully for they may be used for ordinary needs. Commercial Studies have an important role in the curriculum of S. J. A., and Bookkeeping is one of the subjects taught in this all-important role. It is a subject which helps one along the road of the business world and in becoming a competent business woman of tomorrow. It also helps one look toward a happier and more prosperous future. ART We have found a new appreciation of art this year with the help of Sister Eugenia and her many clever ideas. Not only is art the power of doing something not taught by nature or instinct, but it is a power or skill in the use of knowledge. Such things as paper sculpture and modern art abstraction have proven this. Top picture: tLeft to Rightjz Ginger Puent, Judy Hedrick, Sister Eugenia, Sara Raab, Marianne Aerne, and Rita Schleeter. The grounds take on the look of a picture after the Sisters and girls spend many fun- filled hours of work removing the last winter's traces of dead leaves and broken branches. Looking back through time to last year's procession, we see Virginia Perez of the Dominican Republic representing all of the girls as she places the crown on Our Lady's head proclaiming Her, Queen of May. This year's procession will bring to us the same picture of girls and Sisters giving praise to Mary. They will be represented by Mary Ellen Perez of the Dominican Republic at the crowning, Theresa Taylor will be Maid of Honor, and Judith Curran will bear Our Lady's Banner. Our Lady's Statue will be carried to the place of honor by Regina Dunbar, Kathleen Smith, Judy Henry, and Barbara Hirzel. The remaining Seniors l will carry flowers to be placed at Our Lady's feet. All present will join in in saying the Rosary, an Act of Consecration and singing hymns to Mary. We ask of you, dear Lady, at the time of Holy Benediction, pray for us on this your special day here at S. J. A.
