L .11 -I 1955 PALLADIUM Pulnlisllenl By The Senior Class St. Joseplfs Acaclenly Tipton, Indiana DEDICATION Vari-colored memories are woven into this Palladium - halls and walls, the Chapel's charm and the campus in the spring, friendly smiles, gay activities, and the quiet of study hours. Through them all, bright with simple cheerfulness, glowing with kindly interest, strong with devotion to duty, and as beautiful as his hymns, runs the golden thread of the memory of Father Faurote. It is to you, Father, that we gratefully dedicate the Palladium of 1955. THE LIFE OF GOD Of Joseph and his virtues let us sing, O happy spouse of Mary, may we bring To all the blessed story of his care, And how he shared the holy life of God. He shared the lowly stable at His birth, He trod the sandy desert, knew the mirth Of blessed happy childhood spent beside The modest home, where love and beauty reigned. O Joseph, may we know thee, seek to give To others thy great secret, how to live In joy and unsung glory, happy peace, The very breath, the holy life of God. GOD'S MIRRORS Every dewy droplet Glistening by the lea, Mirrors all the beauty Of the land and Sea. Nature's lavish beauty Beckons to a Mind Building worlds of Spirit Beauties more refined. God's Eternal Mirror High above the clod, Blessed Virgin Mother Shows the Face of God. The Reverend D. Leo Faurote TRINITY HYMN Blest be Thou, God our Father, Our souls were made for Thee. May grateful voices praise Thee For all eternity. Blest be our Holy Savior Who washed away our shame. Blest be the Name of Jesus, Blest be His Holy Name. Blest be the Holy Spirit, Lest we forget Thee most. The love of God, our Refuge, Blest be the Holy Ghost. Blest be the great Jehova, One God eternally, Three Holy Persons praise we, Blest be the Trinity. Most Reverend John G. Bennett, D. D. On January 10, Our Most Reverend Bishop, John G. Bennett, celebrated his Tenth Anniversary as Bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana. Our Bishop, who has devoted much of his time to the sanc- tification of youth, gave the annual retreat to the St. Joseph Academy girls in Cctober. His unceasing works of goodness have been deeply appreciated and he will never be forgotten in our prayers. FATIMA IS REPRODUCED AT S. J. A. Now at S. J. A., we have a realistic likeness of Our Lady's apparition at Fatima. A stranger passing by would think the shrine is one of world-wide fame. Well, it could be, as the shrine is one of the most beautiful on the face of the earth. The statues, handcarved in Italy, give a touch of the old world splendor. As you gaze at the shrine you feel as if you are at Fatima watching the children. Soon the shrine will be dotted with flowers, and the lawn will have a green carpet drawn over it. Surely, everyone at S. J. A. is tremendously proud of our shrine. Elizabeth Mutran '58 Father Edward Dempsey came to Saint Joseph's as Chaplain soon after Christmas va- cation. Father was originally from Rochester, New York, but has spent the last few years at Saint Ann's Church in Lafayette. Since he came to the Academy, he has been teaching all the Religion classes five days a week, as well as English IV. We are very happy to have Father Dempsey with us and hope he will re- main as Chaplain for many years to come. OUR FACULTY Left to right, seated: Sister M. de Lourdes, llev. Mother M. Gerard. Still another sentinel has been posted to guard Our dear S. J. A., her filial Ward. Our Lady of Fatima has joined the force In directing us accurately on our course. Mother Nature has also had her say, In her perpetually quiet and beautiful way. With all these sentinels so firmly bound Our S. J. A. Campus can surely be found. DRIVING CLASS VVhen the light is red and turns to yellow, Don't try to beat the other fellow. But proceed when the light turns green, So you can prevent the accident unforeseen. Sonja Rogers '56 Driver's Ed has been a part of the Academy's curriculum since 1952. lt is, without a doubt, the favorite class of the day. With Sister Madonna and Sister Rosemary as driving instructors, the pupils are sure to become safe and capable drivers of the future. The girls learn the safe and courteous way to drive in Dual-Control cars. Driver's Ed is one of the most practical and enjoyable subjects taught at the Academy. S. J. A. CAMPUS Our campus is beautiful! ln the spring it is a blanket of rich green. The flowers are bursting open with radiant colors, and the bees are buzzing around them seeking the sweet pollen. In the midst of all this beauty stands St. Katharine Hall, which the students use for physical ed., entertainment, dances and many other activities. Nestled behind the gym is a lovely Sacred Heart Shrine standing on the peak of a rock garden. ln front of this is a small goldfish pond which received many hours of special care from our late beloved Father Faurote. A little to the east of the main entrance is Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, where the crowning of Mary, Our Queen, takes place every May Day. Across from that is a small picturesque grotto of the Little Flower of Jesus. As you approach our Academy up the beautiful driveway lined with various kinds of maple trees, you see first of all a life-like statue of our patron, Saint Joseph. Behind that stands the Academy which has been the home of Saint Joseph's pupils for fifty years. VVe hope he will continue to guard his school for many years to come. Carol Sue Rowe '56 ACTIVITIES 'Blk '7 ?F- is 3 Lf 2 K 2? .aw MAY DAY When May Day at S. J. A. approaches, everyone is filled with anxiety, joy and devotion. This is the day when Sisters, friends and alumnae are all reunited at St. Joseph's to pay special tribute to Mary, the Queen of Peace. Our Lady's statue is carried in an outdoor proces- sion, which ends at the Shrine, where she is crowned by the chosen Senior. Last year this privilege was bestowed on Patricia Crawford. The May Day devotions will take place on May 24 this year. Paula Kerr, Indianapolis, will crown Our Lady in the name of all at S. J. A. May Day is one of the happiest at S. J. A., because everyone has an opportunity to pray to Our Lady in petition, veneration, and above all, thanksgiving for our gift of Faith. 'ffl fm LEADERS OF INDIVIDUAL UNITS Left to right: Nancy Alvey, Madonna Reith, Paula Keir, Jane Weber, Pat Anderson, Norma Davidson, Dorothy Dowd. THE SODALITY OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER Our Lady's Sodality has been one of the most religious activities of S. J. A. for many years. This year the Sodality was divided into seven different units, each having its own officers. Judy O'Connor was Prefect of the entire organizationg Vice-Prefect, Virginia Janseng Secretary, Pat Anderson: and Treasurer, Norma Davidson. Each Sodalist endeavored to live up to her title with daily Rosary and Communion, frequent Confession and, above all, prayer and sac- rifice. THE ROSARY The Family Rosary has grown in many ways, and has spread over the continents of the world. When Father Peyton, modern advocate of the Family Rosary, was on his sick bed, he promised Our Lady that he would spread devotion to the Family Rosary. As a result of the promise, Father Peyton's health was restored. His motto The Family That Prays Together Stays Together has brought many families closer to Mary and her Son. The Family Rosary is needed for many things: the conversion of Russia and all sinners, the destruction of communism, and peace among nations. If you were to visit S. J. A.'s third floor, where the boarders re- side, you would see something like the following: It is almost nine o'clock, and Sister is about to ring the bell for Family Rosary, which the Academy girls themselves started a few years ago. The girls assemble in the corridor to pay their last tribute of the day to Our Blessed Lady. They recite the Rosary each night by candle, light, circled in front of Our Blessed Lady's statue. If more families adhered to Father Peyton's recommendation of the Family Rosary, Our Lady might grant peace to the chaotic world of sin and unhappiness. Ann Etling '56 OUR LADY Beautiful Lady So tender and sweet, We stand today At your loving feet. We see. your bright smile And the tender glance That makes us happy And the sunbeams dance. We know today, As we kneel and pray, That your Son above Gives us His love. Betty Ripberger '55 As well as giving tired minds a rest and building healthy bodies, gym class develops good sports- manship ainong the girls. A. last fall with the appearance of Christopher Lynch, a native of Rath- keale, County Limerick. The lyric tenor has exhibited his talent before many radio and television fans as the magnificent tenor of The Voice of Firestone, guest star of Ed Sullivan and Dave Garroway, as well as star of his own Christopher Lynch Show. Severin Turrell, a Polish pianist who spent several years in a Ger- man concentration camp, acted as accompanist for Mr. Lynch and also thrilled his listeners with a program of outstanding music. CHORAL At 12:37 our lunch hour ends- And the period called Choral proceeds to begin. With altos and sopranos, fboth groups laden with foodj 1t's sometimes hard to get in a singing mood. But with backs straight as sticks, and feet flat on the floor We practice and practice and then - practice some more - For a concert's in sight which means just one thing: Sister Rosemary's busy teaching the right way to sing. Our Ave Maria's with a deep rich soul To please Our Lady which is our main goal. Why is Choral my favorite time of the day? Because we tell, through song, just what We want to say.
