010' Lady of the Smile This year in fourth year Religion the seniors are studying about the famous paintings and pic- tures of the Blessed Mother. The latest in our group was La Vierge Du Sourire COur Lady of the Smilej which the seniors chose for their class patron. The original statue belonged to the Little Flower's mother. After Mrs. Martin's death the statue was in the Little Flower's roorn. Father Dolan tells us in his book, St. Therese Messenger of Mary, a few things of her childhood, page 13. When the Little Flower was ten, Mary took the initiative in deepening the Little Flower's con- viction of her mothe1'liness. At that age, Therese was seized with a strange diagnosis. She seemed to be dying. But in her extremity she looked flxedly upon the statue of Mary at her bedside, begging Mary's assistance. The statue became animated, smiling upon Therese, and she was instantaneous- ly cured. Therese was delivered from her illness by Mary's maternal smile. That maternal smile of Mary was to accompany the Little Flower throughout her adolescence. Concerning her First Communion, St. Therese writes. It seemed to me that Mary looked upon her Little Flower lovingly and smiled upon her again. Therese was chosen to pronounce the Act ot' Consecration to Mary in the name of all the First communicants and it was then that she gave herself once again to Mary. She writes. I put my whole heart into the reading of the prayer, and besought Our Blessed Mother always to watch over me. It seemed to me that she looked down lovingly, and once more smiled upon her Little Flower. v 7- gf T T, Y
