Our Crest The shield used on the cover and throughout the PALLADIUM this year is the shield of faith. This same design is on the crest of our class rings. The background is an adaptation of the fieur-de-lis, which is a for- malized lily and the symbol of purity often associated with St. Joseph. On this background, surmounted by a cross, is the shield of faith. The shield was originally used by the knights of old to protect them- selves against the weapons of the enemy. The crusaders and other Chris- tian knights gave their shields a spiritual meaning when they painted crosses on them. The cross, the symbol of our faith was a reminder to the knights that their faith in God and their co-operation with His graces pro- tected them from their spiritual enemies. The graduating class of 1952 realize that in the life before them they will face many battles both spiritual and temporal. They know that the whole purpose of life is to show God that they will be good soldiers in His army. Equipped with His shield of faith, how can they fail to ward off their enemy and win the battle? Mary Lou Rowney, '52
