This same design is on the crest of our class rings. The background is an adaptation of the fieur-de-lis, which is a for- malized lily and the symbol of purity often associated with St. Joseph. On this background, surmounted by a cross, is the shield of faith. The shield was originally used by the knights of old to protect them- selves against the weapons of the enemy. The crusaders and other Chris- tian knights gave their shields a spiritual meaning when they painted crosses on them. The cross, the symbol of our faith was a reminder to the knights that their faith in God and their co-operation with His graces pro- tected them from their spiritual enemies. The graduating class of 1952 realize that in the life before them they will face many battles both spiritual and temporal. They know that the whole purpose of life is to show God that they will be good soldiers in His army. Equipped with His shield of faith, how can they fail to ward off their enemy and win the battle? The latest in our group was La Vierge Du Sourire COur Lady of the Smilej which the seniors chose for their class patron. The original statue belonged to the Little Flower's mother. After Mrs. Martin's death the statue was in the Little Flower's roorn. Father Dolan tells us in his book, St. Therese Messenger of Mary, a few things of her childhood, page 13. When the Little Flower was ten, Mary took the initiative in deepening the Little Flower's con- viction of her mothe1'liness. At that age, Therese was seized with a strange diagnosis. She seemed to be dying. But in her extremity she looked flxedly upon the statue of Mary at her bedside, begging Mary's assistance. The statue became animated, smiling upon Therese, and she was instantaneous- ly cured. Therese was delivered from her illness by Mary's maternal smile. That maternal smile of Mary was to accompany the Little Flower throughout her adolescence. Concerning her First Communion, St. Therese writes. It seemed to me that Mary looked upon her Little Flower lovingly and smiled upon her again. Therese was chosen to pronounce the Act ot' Consecration to Mary in the name of all the First communicants and it was then that she gave herself once again to Mary. She writes. I put my whole heart into the reading of the prayer, and besought Our Blessed Mother always to watch over me. It seemed to me that she looked down lovingly, and once more smiled upon her Little Flower. v 7- gf T T, Y First Row: Monica Tragesser, Tipton, President Betty Wallpe, Tipton, Vice-President Doris Koors, Tipton, Secretary Florence Ley, Tipton, Treasurer Second Row: Third Row: Josephine Gundlach, Indianapolis Anita Harris, Kokomo Evelyn Henry, Tipton Joanne Jordan, Kokomo Roberta Kinney, Kokomo Theresa Mattingly, Tipton Wetanah Pierce, Pine Village Rebecca Reith, Kokomo Patsy Taylor, Kokomo Virginia Tebbe, Tipton gf ff 7 PT T Y' 'Y -Q 4 1 Q --,1.,,r,f-F-,..,.. ,.A,, -- . ... ...rf-me-. -P - The Ghost Of S. J. A. Hello there, eve1'ybodyl I am Clarabella Alumna, a ghost representing all of the girls who have, at one time or another attended St. Joseph's Academy. My duties consist in show- ing new girls around, and acquainting them with some of the strange customs we have at S. J. A. Oh, here comes a new girl now. Enrolling at the middle of the year is rather hard I suppose, and she looks so confused and bewildered. I'll have to go and talk with her. How do you do, young lady. May I welcome you to the portals of St. Joe's! My name is Clarabella-what's that you say, this building looks awful big, and you feel very awkward in these new surroundings? Well now, I know just how you feel. When I came here, back in 1917, my sentiments were exactly the same, but a quick trip around the place will change your mind I'm sure. Let's get started now, and we'll take a short tour around . . . come on! Well, here we are on the second floor. This is where all of our girls pursue their stud- ies with great zest. Let's tiptoe in here, sh-h-h! Oh, don't be alarmed, this is only the Latin class. No, it really isn't as hard as it sounds. Come now, let's go and peek in on some other classes, all right? You say you smell a peculiar odor? That is probably the Chemistry class in full progress, come this way! Oh yes, they're making chlorine, I think. You know! You don't? Oh well, never mind, you'll learn soon enough. This room? Oh no, don't open that door . . . xff-1f2 'TbWg, crash, bangl, moansl, talkl, etc. Oh, I'm really sorry, my dear, I should have warned you. You see, that is the Palladium Ofiice, where our Seniors are work- ing on the year-book. As you can plainly see, they're in full swing, right now, and everyone has to stay out of their way! You look a little shaken, my friend, let's go upstairs and you can sit down and rest in the rec1'eation room, that is, if you can find room. You see, that is a very popular spot with the resident students. Well, here we are at the rec now. Be careful there, don't get in the way of those dancers, or they'll have you doing a jitter-bug, quicker than a wink. My, my, these girls really step lively, don't they? Why, in my day we did a nice slow waltz. Well, let's go take a look at the rooms, and then I'll show you where you're to stay for this year. A1'6H't the rooms lovely? Here's yours now-you know, this used to be my room, and I still visit it once in awhile, and stretch out under my sheet for a short ghost's nap. Let me introduce you to your new roommate ,... Lottie-Laugh-Alot, here is a new girl, she is going to be your roommate for the rest of the year. I'm sure you'll enjoy each other's com- pany, just so Lottie here doesn't keep you laughing until you split your seams. That has proved to be a very embarrassing experience for me. CSheets, you knowlj Let's take her to the gym now, Lottie, and show her around a bit. All right? Do you have roller skates? That is one of the girls' favorite occupations he1'e, skating in the gym. Isn't this gym nice ? Oh, there are some girls over there! Betty-Bounce-Along, Nel- lie-Noodle-Head, here is a new girl . . . Say, where are all of you going? Come back here with that new girl!!! Oh well, goodbye my friend, I guess I'm just getting a little too old and mildewed for this younger generation. Anyway, she seemed in very good company, and she su1'ely seemed to be enjoying herself! I think I'll just fioat around for awhile, and enjoy the fresh air. I'm sure little Hettie- Happy-Heart is well convinced that she is going to enjoy herself here, and from the way the gi1'ls took her over, I'm confident that they'l1 get along just fine! Of course, who could resist the S. J. A. girls' warm welcome?l? Since my part of the job is done, I'll just go back to my dusty corners-oh, to be young again!!! Agnes Semanick, '54 A5 aj E 9:-. Our School Although I'm just a day-pupil Attending the Academy, I often dream of the beauty of night When my thoughts are free. I see the moonbeams shining down On St. Joseph's statue Standing there so powerful and tall, Guarding the lovely view Of the stately line of trees Right in front of our school. I wonder if dear Sister Katharine, After a life nobly spent, Feels as I do when she gazes At the bright firmament, That the moonlight is God's blessing On our beloved school, In care of the Sisters of St. Joseph Ever faithful to His Rule. Anni Belle McCu1ley, '54 Spring Awakening I woke up ea1'ly one spring day A bluebird sang its merry lay My heart was glad to hear its call The beauty did my heart enthrall. The bushes awaken and start to assemble, But the wind through the trees makes everything tremble, While a chorus of robins and bluebirds sing Bringing glad assurance that this is Spring.
