MUTHERS CLUB 2,5 New MOTI-lERS'CLUB OFFICERS Mrs J W Schofleld Secretary Mrs Mart1nGarc1a V1ce Presldent Mrs Mar1aC Hernandez V1ce PTCS1dCHl, Mrs W1ll1am Scanlan Presldent and absent Mrs D B1rkel Treasurer The flrst act1v1ty of the Mothers' Club for the year 1952 1953 was 1n c onj unc t1O n wlth all the parents of St Joseph s 1n puttlng on the Fall Carnlval 1n l1eu of the Mex1can Suppers served durlng Charro Days The general Chalrman for the Carnlval was Mr Owen Combe and the ass1stantCha1rman Mr Tony Cfonzalea Due to the splendld cooperatlon of all 1nterested parents the Carn1val proved most proiltable and en Joyable and lt was voted to make the Fall Carnlval an annual ew ent at St Joseph s The Brothers the S1sters and students worked most enthus1 astlcly and the Mothers Club 15 most grateful to all who helped make the Carn1val such a success A Chr1stmas Party was arranged for the Ch1ldren 1n the grammar grades and approprlate Chr1stmas remembrances were sent the S1sters the Bro thers the Jun1ors and Chapla1n The Mothers Club asslsted 1n the sale of Chr1stmas Seals at the booth 1n Den Russ Pharmacy A Blngo was sponsored by the club on the f1rst Thursday of Charro Days Cake sandw1ches cold drmks and coffee atF1eld Day exerc1ses on March 19th St Joseph s Day Long awa1ted ram began to fall and the program was postponed unt1l the followlng Saturday at whlch tlme the sale of food cont1nued and the lucky number wasdrawnfor aDeep Fry whlch the Club gave away I am sure that each mother who ha part1c1pated 1n the act1v1t1es of the Club th1s year feels deeply grateful to the Brothers and the Slsters who have Worked so falthfully w1th us to 1nsure the success of our undertalungs The fOllOW1Hg offlcers have been elected forthe next year Mrs Marla Hernandez Calderon1 Presldent Mrs J A Soto V1ce Pres1dent Mrs Ray Tolson, Jr. , Secretaryg Mrs. Dorothy Rutledge, Treasurer. JUBILARIANS HONORED BY EX STUDENTS AT BANQUET Rufino Lopez, President of the Association Brothers Paul Allemand and Henry Fumeaux Jubilarians and Brother William Vessels Director of St .Joseph s IEX STUDENTS CLUB First perceptible glimmerings of the formation of an ex students as sociation took place on August 26 1952 at a gathering of former students of St Joseph s Academy at a dinner held at Palmetto Inn in Brownsville a dinner which was in itself a first of its kind A committee was named at this August gathering to mull over the idea of an organization composed of former students of St Joseph s This formulative committee composed of Bertram Combe, Sabas Klahn, Conrad Cloetta, Joe Cisneros, Jr. , Raul Cervantes, Ernesto Villarreal, Justo Cisneros, Edward Bauer, Clarence Celaya, Ernest Knosel, and Oscar Egly, met with Bro. William Vessels at St. Joseph's onSeptember 5, 1952. It was at this meeting thatthe first actual plans for the association took form. Next in order was the selection of a set of officers. Ballots were mailed to all former students for whom an address was available, and returns named the following as the first officers of the Ex Students Association of St. Joseph's Academy of Brownsville, Texas: President, Rufino Lopez, Vice President, Relio Yarritu, Secretary, Conrad L. Cloetta, Treasurer, Sabas Klahn, Sergeant-at-arms, Albert Allala. Directors and Alternate Directors were. Joe Cisneros, Jr., Justo Cisneros, Oscar Egly, Bertram Combe, Edward Bauer, Clarence Celaya, Raul Cervantes, Ernest Knosel, Joe Tijerina, and Robert Steiner. After a set of By-Laws had been adopted, the organization settled down to work on its first major project, the arranging of a tribute to Bro. Paul A. Allemand on the occasion of his Golden Jubilee. December Zl, 1952, was the date selected for the celebration, whichbegan witha Mass at 11 o'clock at the Sacred Heart Church in Brownsville. Adinner at Cummings Jr. High Cafetorium followed, where a series of speeches of praise, congratulation, and gratitude were made before a commemorative w rist watch was presented to the beloved Bro. Paul. The Ex-Students Association then settled down to the registration of new members in anticipation of the annual reunion dinner, which is to be held yearly during the month of August. 90
